Rainwater harvesting requires the following steps: 1. Check roof is suitable for collection 2. Rainwater Pre-filtration 3. Gutters and gutter downpipes 4. JoJo Rainwater Storage Tanks 5. Rainwater Accessories 6. Rainwater Discharge or Pump System Our quick selection guide on the following pages will follow these 6 steps, for you to design your own system and know where to get and how many of each part/s you may require. General Information To calculate how much water you can theoretically collect. 1m 2 of roof x 1mm rainfall = 1liter of rain. Thus 60m 2 x 20mm rainfall = 1200L of rain collected. Rainwater harvesting will require gutters and downpipes on a pitched roof and a downpipe or outlet for a flat roof. 1. Roof Collection Surface Roofs suitable for collecting rainwater: Roofs unsuitable for collecting rainwater: Concrete Tile IBR/Corrugated/metal sheeting Glazed Tiles Wooden Shingles Clay Tiles Roofs where lead is used Roofs containing asbestos Roofs painted with materials such as lead, chromate, tar/bitumen, fungicides or other toxins Roofs where bitumen (tar) has been used Roof of thatch or green roof can be used but be aware that organic contamination will be higher. Always check to see if they ve been treated with any herbicides, pesticides, fire retardants and what soil material (green roofs) was used.

4 2. Rainwater Pre-filtration All rainwater should be filtered before it enters the tank. Unfiltered rainwater allows leaves, grit, bird droppings and other undesirable material to enter the tank. This increases rain tank maintenance, increases water odour/ contamination and will damage any pressure pumps used. CHOOSE YOUR DISCHARGE METHOD REMEMBER YOU CAN HAVE A TAP AND PRESSURE PUMP TANK ADAPTOR, BRASS TAP AND OUTLET BLOCK JoJo 750L Slimline Tanks come standard with a tank adaptor and brass tap, as well as a block for the bottom tank outlet. Other JoJo water tanks will require you to buy a tank adaptor and tap separately, as well as a block for the bottom outlet. CHOOSE YOUR TYPE OF PRE-FILTRATION BASKET FILTER JoJo Slimline tanks come with this as standard. All other tanks will require this additionally. This is the simplest form of filtration and will need to be manually cleaned periodically. Even if you choose another type of pre-filtration, it may be better to also have a basket filter to prevent mosquitos from entering the tank. If you choose this option you can use galvanised downpipes or PVC downpipes. BASKET FILTER/S RAIN HEAD Rain head leaf screens are self cleaning. You will require a leaf head for each downpipe that you wish to divert into a tank. Make sure you collect all the pipes and fittings to go with this item (see below). Consider adding a first flush diverter if you use a Rain Head leaf Screen. If you choose this option you will need to use PVC downpipes. Sizing of PVC downpipes is shown in the next section. RAIN HEAD/S FIRST FLUSH DIVERTER/S First flush diverters prevent the first bit of dirty water from entering the tank. They improve water quality and help protect pumps. Each Rain head/leaf Screen requires a first flush diverter OR place one larger first flush diverter before water enters the tank. As a minimum try divert 20L for every 100m2 of roof area. One meter of 110mm PVC pipe holds 8 liters. 5 5. Rainwater Accessories There are a range of rainwater system accessories to customise and improve your rainwater system. This improves system efficiency and design. CHOOSE YOUR RAINWATER ACCESSORIES MANUAL RAINWATER GAUGE This fits on all rainwater tanks up to 5000L capacity and allows you to see the volume of rainwater inside your tank using a simple gauge. TANK GAUGE JOJO TANK ALERT The JoJo Tank Alert allows you to monitor water tank levels from the comfort of your own home or office. The JoJo Tank Alert kit contains an electronic gauge, which will accurately and reliably measure the water level in your tank and transmit that information to a receiver located in your home or office. Communication distance to the receiver is typically greater than 200m and measurement resolution is down to 1cm. JOJO TANK ALERT 6. Rainwater Discharge or Pump System Once you ve got the rainwater into the tank, you need to get it out! Remember that water only flows downhill so if you use gravity to discharge your tank you can only use water downhill from the JoJo tank water level if you use a hosepipe. You can use a watering can or bucket to take water to areas above your JoJo tank water level. If you want to use the rainwater with a hose to spray the water to water your garden, or wash your car or to use the rainwater in your irrigation system then you will need a pressure pump. Household use of rainwater is encouraged. It can easily be used to flush toilets or be used in washing machines and dishwashers. 1. Gutters and Gutter Downpipes Gutters and downpipes come in either metal or plastic materials. Your choices will depend on aesthetics and how you wish to design the rainwater system components to match together. If you already have gutters then you may only need to change/update your downpipes. CHOOSE YOUR GUTTERS AND/OR DOWNPIPES CHOOSE EITHER A. GALVANISED OR B. PVC A. GALVANISED METAL GUTTERS + DOWNPIPES These are galvanised to prevent rust and can be painted. Galvanised gutter downpipes can be directed into JoJo tanks if you are using a basket filter but will not be compatible if you wish to use Rain heads and/or first flush diverters. GUTTER LENGTHS Each length is 6m long GUTTER STOPENDS GUTTER OUTLET/S GUTTER 90 ANGLES GUTTER DOWNPIPES Each downpipe is 3m long GUTTER DOWNPIPE BENDS B. PVC GUTTERS + DOWNPIPES These come in white and can also be painted if necessary. PVC gutter downpipes can be directed into JoJo tanks when using a basket filter. Pipes are also compatible if you wish to use Rain Heads and/or first flush diverters (adaptors for various sizes may be ). PVC downpipes come in 80mm round, which is adequate for use if you direct water into a tank and use a basket filter. It may be better to use a 110mm S&V PVC pipe if you use a Rain Head leaf screen and divert water into a tank (no Adaptors ).

6 GUTTER LENGTHS Each length is 6m long GUTTER STOPENDS As a general rule of thumb: 0-40m 2 = JoJo 750L Slimline tank or multiples thereof 40m 2-150m 2 = JoJo 2500L Vertical Tank or multiples thereof >150m 2 = JoJo 5000L Vertical Tank or multiples thereof GUTTER OUTLET/S GUTTER 90 ANGLES FOR PVC DOWNPIPES AND BENDS CHOOSE EITHER 80MM OR 110MM GUTTER DOWNPIPES - 80MM Each downpipe is 3m long This option is easier if you are directing rainwater straight into a basket filter and no Rain Head leaf screen is used. GUTTER DOWNPIPE BENDS - 80MM Marley Vynadeep Swanneck ends PVC S & V PIPES - 110MM These come in either 2m or 6m Lengths This option is easier if you intend using Rain Head leaf screens and/or first flush diverters PVC S & V 90 BENDS - 110MM 4. JoJo Rainwater Storage Tank Always try go for the largest storage that you can afford or that will fit into the space you have provided for. The tank will need to be on a firm stable base, preferably a paved surface or a concrete slab. The tank edges should NOT overhang the edge of the ground support. Remember that the top of the JoJo tank will need to be lower than your gutters, for water to flow into the tank using gravity. Tanks do not have to be directly under the gutter and can be placed anywhere on the property, though design and installation does become more technical. If your JoJo Rainwater Tank constantly overflows, its an indication to add an additional tank. To add an additional tank is easy - make sure all tanks are placed on the same level and connect all of the bottom outlets of the tanks together. CHOOSE YOUR JOJO RAINWATER TANK JOJO 750L SLIMLINE OR MARBLELINE TANK This tank comes standard with a basket filter, brass tap and bottom outlet plug. JOJO 750L SLIMLINE TANK OR MARBLELINE TANK The slimline tank is a solid colour tank - 8 colour choices The marbleline tank is the speckled coloured tank - 3 colour choices. Marbleline coloured tanks cost slightly more. JOJO 2500L VERTICAL TANK This tank doesn t come with any accessories. JOJO 2500L VERTICAL TANK You have a choice of 8 different solid colours and 3 speckled marbleline colours. Marbleline coloured tanks cost slightly more. JOJO 5000L VERTICAL TANK This tank doesn t come with any accessories. JOJO 5000L VERTICAL TANK You have a choice of 8 different solid colours and 3 speckled marbleline colours. Marbleline coloured tanks cost slightly more. The sizing of the tank will depend on many factors: The size of roof area you collect from. Your budget. The area available to place tank/s.
