3 A PLACE THAT PLASTICS CALL HOME. FOR OVER 75 YEARS. During this time our federal state has developed into a leading centre of global expertise for the production and processing of polymers. In 2012, the 100 companies involved in the plastics industry generated a turnover of b 2 billion, which accounted for nearly a third of total sector turnover in Eastern Germany. One of the companies based here is Folienwerk Wolfen GmbH, which specialises in the development and production of high quality films. The company s innovations include long life films made from ethylene-vinyl acetate-co-polymers for use in solar modules and biodegradable films on the basis of renewable raw materials.

Saxony-Anhalt is an internationally competitive location for innovative plastics manufacturers. For several decades, Plaste und Elaste (Plastics and Elastics) was a leading international quality brand from Schkopau. Today it is home to the biggest plastics manufacturer in central Germany, Dow Olefinverbund. Its products and services at the Schkopau and Leuna locations facilitate a wide variety of solutions in the production of dyes, adhesives, packaging and insulation materials. Since 2009, the European Centre for Polyurethane and Epoxy Adhesives, as well as the Aftermarket Production base of the global business division, Dow Automotive, have also been based in Schkopau. At the site of the Dow ValuePark Schkopau, where synthetic rubber was manufactured on an industrial scale for the first time in 1937, Styron Deutschland GmbH currently produces almost 300,000 tonnes of rubber for high performance tyres annually. The company is currently investing approx. b 90 million in the expansion of its production capacities. From autumn 2012, the new plant will begin with the manufacture of new rubber polymers for polypropylene production for the packaging industry and auto sector. Their benefits are also utilised for car tyres, reducing the rolling friction and so in turn, helping to reduce CO 2 emissions. Brazilian plastics producer Braskem operates a polypropylene production plant in Schkopau producing products for use in the packaging industry and the automobile sector. The company is the biggest manufacturer of thermoplastics in South America and a leader in the development of biopolymers. BASF Leuna GmbH, which manufactures polyamide 6 and 6.6 as well as compounds of both plastics under brand name Ultramid, has more than 50 years of experience as a plastics manufacturer. As a result of their strength and thermal resistance, they are used all over the world for machine elements and as electrical insulating materials.

Whether it is auto construction, yoghurt cups or solar modules: we can t imagine our daily lives without plastic products that originate from Saxony-Anhalt. Their variety of possible uses is as wide ranging as the many different types of plastics processing companies to be found throughout the state. One of the companies which is benefitting from the proximity to the large scale plastics manufacturers is the Italian Manuli Stretch Group. The world s biggest manufacturer of stretch films has been based in the Dow ValuePark Schkopau since RP Compounds GmbH also benefits from the superb conditions in Schkopau. Each year, its 120 employees refine roughly 110,000 tonnes of plastics granulate which is used in the automobile industry and for the insulation of high voltage cables. The biggest PVC manufacturer in Europe, INEOS ChlorVinyls GmbH, is also a beneficiary manufacturing roughly a quarter of its annual 1.4 million tonne output at the Schkopau location. More than two million longitudinal shafts as well as side shafts and links are manufactured each year at the plants of the IFA ROTORION Group in Haldensleben, Gardelegen and Irxleben. With its products made from carbon-fibre and fibreglass reinforced plastic, the biggest automotive supplier in Saxony-Anhalt has established itself as a technological leader for composite components and lightweight construction solutions. The best helmets in the world for the best drivers in the world it is with this aspiration that Schuberth GmbH from Magdeburg has convinced Formula 1 drivers such as Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso of the quality of its premium helmets produced from high-strength carbon fibre. In addition to this, the company supplies approx. 1.5 million helmets for industrial work safety as well as to fire departments and police forces all over the world. Energy efficient windows, doors and facade systems made from plastic have been produced by Schüco International KG at its ultra-modern extrusion plant in Weißenfels since Since 2006, the site has also been the location of the Schüco Plastics Division headquarters. The rubber factory KRAIBURG REALASTEC GmbH processes around 85,000 tonnes of recycled waste materials into over 300 new products each year. Floor and ground coverings made in Salzwedel have been used at Dubai International Airport, on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and in the Reichstag building in Berlin.

6 CREATING ADDED VALUE. /// Impressive example of the beneficial collaboration between research and business in Saxony- Anhalt: the Fraunhofer Pilot Systems Centre in Schkopau In Saxony-Anhalt, 22 universities and research organisations work in close collaboration with the plastics sector. This means new products and processes become market-ready more quickly. A key example of this is the Fraunhofer pilot systems centre for polymer synthesis and processing at the Dow Value Park, Schkopau. Here, solutions ranging from test tubes to polymer production on an industrial scale are developed along the entire value added chain. The centre of expertise, which is operated by the Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Polymer Research IAP and Materials Mechanics, IWM, is dedicated to researching water soluble polymers for use in environmental technology, primarily process optimisations in the area of polymer manufacturing. In collaboration with the PAZ, the Fraunhofer Institute for Materials Mechanics, IWM, researches innovative solutions for components made from thermoplastic polymers, composite materials and elastomers. At the same time the institute offers its customers the complete development chain from the material designs to the inspected prototype component. Special plastics applications for medical technology are developed at the Halle- Merseburg plastics competence centre. The areas of research include macroporous foams made from polyhydroxyalkanoates for cell generation as well as absorbent carriers for pharmaceuticals. The Institute for Polymer Materials e. V. (IPW) primarily supports small and medium sized companies with the optimisation of polymer materials, nanostructured materials and compounds. The universities and technical colleges in Saxony-Anhalt also contribute to the competitiveness of the plastics sector in the state with their excellent research and training. In this context, Merseburg University of Applied Sciences has established itself as a key partner for the chemicals and plastics industry with its courses in chemical, environmental and plastics engineering. At the Martin- Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, two professors are currently carrying out research on modern synthesis strategies and the characterisation of polymers. At the chair for plastics engineering, one of many research projects involves new polymer materials which are being developed through the use of blending and composite technologies. The new generation of qualified specialists for the regional plastics industry is being secured by the bachelor s and master s degree courses in chemistry and the internationally oriented M. Sc. course in Polymer Materials Science.

Since its foundation, the Plastics Centre of South Germany (Süddeutschen Kunststoff Zentrums SKZ) in Halle (Saale) has developed into a Germany-wide competence centre and training location in the area of fibre reinforced plastics. Currently, 90 % of all lamination professionals (in accordance with DVS guideline 2,220) in Germany are trained here. In addition to the education and training courses for the manual processing of fibre composite materials, such as in chemicals systems construction, motor vehicle and boat building and in the construction of wind power systems, SKZ offers small and medium sized companies practically oriented consulting services in the areas of technology, product politics and sales markets. The SKZ customers benefit from the international contacts at Germany s biggest plastics institute, which is also represented with offices in the United Arab Emirates, China, Russia and the USA.
