1 Fire Tech Promotion Course 11/26/12 Fall 2012 On-line Homework Program PART I - DUNN CHAP. #13 & 14: Dunn, Chapter 13: 1) Stair Hallways of most multi-story buildings today have fire-retarded enclosure walls, firerated doors, frames and self-closing doors. The Stairway Structure is also fire-protected; the underside of a wooden stair has a fire-retarded soffit, usually made of wire lath & plaster. Balusters supporting the stair railing are usually required to be non-combustible. Stringboards covering the ends of the steps are usually required to be non-combustible. Because of these enhancements in stairway design Dunn states the following: Please indicate if you agree or disagree with the below statement in quotes above? (Dunn, chapter 13) The stairway is the safest area in the wooden interior of the building and logically the best avenue for the initial fire attack. A) Agree or D) Disagree 2) As a sharp Fire Tech student you would know that the preferred stair in modern building construction is the? (Dunn, chapter 13) A) Stacked B) Continuous C) L-shaped D) U-return 3) Which stair below will not fail if the floor collapses? (Dunn, chapter 13) A) Stacked B) Continuous C) U-return 4) Steel Framed U-Return Stairs have a different collapse danger from wooden stairs. The steel frame of risers, stringboards and railings rarely collapse. The most serious injuries to members on these stairs occur when the collapses. Please fill in the blank? (Dunn, chapter 13) 1 Dunn Chap. #13 & 14
2 Fire Tech Promotion Course 11/26/2012 Fall 2012 On-line Homework Program 5) The Steel Framed U-Return Stairs that sustain the most intermediate landing collapses are those with treads and landings constructed of stone unsupported by a steel pan. These stone treads and intermediate landings are laid into a steel frame supported only by a one inch angle iron edge around the rectangular or square open area of the tread or landing area of the stair. Some steel stairs have the underside of a stone tread or landing completely supported by a reinforcing pan, these stairs do not collapse. The intermediate landing collapse is the most serious danger of U-Return stairs. However, the failure of a stone stair tread or step, is the most frequent cause of collapse of a U-return stair. When climbing a steel-framed, U-return stair with stone treads a member should follow, which procedures below? (Dunn, chapter 13) A) A member should place the middle of his foot on the stone tread, directly over the riser. B) A member should not allow the stone tread to support his weight. C) A member should always avoid stepping on the intermediate landing. D) A member should hold onto the banister and step from a spot above the riser of the lower stair section s topmost tread to a spot above the riser of the upper section s lowest tread, and then swing around. Dunn, Chapter 14: 1) Please choose the correct positive features of Exterior Screened Stairways according to Dunn? (Dunn, chapter 14) A) The safest type of fire escape. B) It is enclosed by a high metal screen or railing. C) It extends from the top floor of the building to the street by way of a permanent, stationary metal stair. D) It has no sliding drop ladder, gooseneck ladder or counterbalance stair from the lowest balcony to the street. E) It is like an interior stair in that; the rise of the step is similar, it is wide enough for 3 people to descend side by side, it includes a handrail. 2) Please choose an incorrect feature of Party Balcony Fire Escapes according to Dunn? (Dunn, chapter 14) A) The party balcony has no stairway or ladder connecting the intermediate balconies. There is no access to balconies above or below, or to the street. B) The party balcony is strictly a horizontal emergency exit through the adjoining occupancy. C) The real protection provided by a party balcony is the un-pierced fire division between the two adjoining occupancies. D) Formerly constructed of wood, party balconies today are constructed of metal or concrete. E) The hazard of the party balcony is collapse from overloading or failure of the supports fastening the balcony to the outside of the building. 2 Dunn Chap. #13 & 14
3 Fire Tech Promotion Course 11/26/12 Fall 2012 On-line Homework Program 3) When arriving at a fire where people have taken refuge on any type of fire escape, members should act immediately to remove them from these old, rusted, metal structures. The safest method to remove people from a party balcony is correctly described in which, choice below? (Dunn, chapter 14) A) Through the designated horizontal exit and into the adjoining apartment window or door. B) Aerial Ladder C) Tower ladder D) Portable Ladder 4) Please choose the correct lessons learned according to Dunn in regards to Fire Escapes? (Dunn, chapter 14) A) When activating a sliding drop ladder, a firefighter should always stand beneath the fire escape balcony. B) If the drop ladder falls out of the tracks the area under the fire escape will provide protection and the firefighter will not be struck by the outward falling ladder. C) Firefighters should not stand beneath a counterbalance stairway or its cable, pulley wheel, or heavy metal balancing weights. D) When the stability of a fire escape is doubtful, use a Fire Department ground ladder. 5) If party balconies are involved, members should use portable ladders or aerial ladders, taking special care not to strike the weakened fire escape with excessive force when placing the tip of the ladder on the fire escape railing. Please indicate if you agree or disagree with the above statement from Dunn? (Dunn, chapter 14) A) Agree or D) Disagree 3 Dunn Chap. #13 & 14
