1 The Haukaas Bale Cart Changing The Way Bales are Moved! The Haukaas Bale Cart:... has been the missing link in the bale moving process. Just as the grain cart is the link between the combine and the semi in an efficient harvesting program so is the Haukaas Bale Cart the link between the baler and the semi in the most efficient way of moving bales.... has been designed to be an accumulator, to quickly gather the bales and place them in semitrailer size groups in the field or at the road approach to be picked up later by truck and trailers. However, due to the Haukaas Bale Cart s size, speed of loading and unloading it has been found that hauling bales up to 4 miles can be done efficiently.... not only gathers, it also sets the bales in rows the right spacing apart to allow a semi and trailer to drive between them to have the bales loaded tube style. To illustrate, note the difference between a Cat Payloader and a farm tractor with a front end loader bucket. They both do the same type of work but the expectations are different... The Haukaas Bale Cart is the Cat Payloader of bale carriers!...the expectation of each machine is 200,000 bales! (To bring that into perspective at 1,000 bales a year that s 200 years of use!)... weighs in at just under 10,000 lbs empty, that is 1,000 lbs. of iron per bale hauled...compare that to what else is used in the industry!!... is rental tough...for the last 7 years the Haukaas Bale Cart has been resoundingly accepted by the rental stores. It s simplicity, low maintenance and rugged design has made it a winner! More than half of the Haukaas Bale Carts have ended up in rental stores.... is now virtually maintenance free...other than the standard walk around and checking the air in the tires, there is not much to do in getting it ready for the field. The greaseless and maintenance free Poly Lube Teflon Bushings* are located at all the high wear stress points on the machine. Nylatron GS bushings are used at the remaining wear points making it so that on the 2013 Quick Picks there are no grease points on the machine with the exception of the wheel hubs... (The rental companies have requested the greaseable hubs). * Poly Lube Teflon Bushings are used by Caterpillar in their earthmoving equipment.... is perhaps the ideal piece of farm equipment for being joint owned by two or more hay producers. Unlike other pieces of farm equipment that are time sensitive where everyone needs to use it in the same short window of time the Haukaas Bale Cart will be required by most producers only a few days in a normally large window of time. Also because there is really nothing to wear out on the machine it minimizes the hassles and complications that sometime arise with joint owned equipment. The benefit to the smaller hay producers is that, depending on the number of bales being picked, it is possible to own a Haukaas Bale Cart for only pennies a bale during the term of a lease and after that the owners own it. 1 of 3

2 ... is easy to operate...it is a good machine for a novice operator to learn on...or for an older operator to just enjoy their day.... is ideal for the hay producer who wants to get the bales off the field quickly to allow the hay to continue to grow for the next cut.... will pick the bales up and set them back down on the exact same spot. The advantage being that only one spot on the bale becomes soiled and also that the flat spot of the bale is always on the bottom. Bales loaded with the bottoms down make a better and safer load on a semi trailer.... will also allow the operator to sort bales in the field. It is not uncommon to have different quality of bales in the same field. Sometimes weed areas are baled separately. With the Haukaas Bale Cart the operator can quickly sort the load by dropping the bales a few at a time in different locations and then reloading.... is capable of quickly reloading the bales again from the rows. With the Haukaas Bale Cart the operator has the option to come back at a later date, reload 10 bales in seconds and move them to another location or distribute them for pasture feeding. When pasture feeding with the Haukaas Bale Cart the bales can be individually dropped on the go. Another bonus is that with the chambers folded up, it is easy for a person to walk along and cut the strings or wrap from the bottom of the bales. Pros and Cons To Tube Style Loads There are six advantages to loading tube style. #1. The speed at which the bales are loaded... the trailer can be loaded two bales at a time with a grapple...a 53 trailer can be loaded in 11 minutes! #2. This procedure is easier on the loader tractor as for the majority of the bales the tractor rolls in light to the bales, lift and sets the bales on the trailer and then backs out light. There is much less driving and turning with the bales in the loader around the field. #3. Easier to load... With proper racks the placement of the bales on the trailer is easier. #4. A safer load... With the proper racks the bales will center themselves on the trailer. #5. The center of gravity of the load is lower reducing the chance of tipping the trailer over in a high wind or on a bad field approach. #6. The load is easier to strap (in certain areas only the front set of bales and the last two require strapping). There are two disadvantages to loading tube style: #1. On a 53 trailer you haul 4 less bales. Depending on the distance the bales are being hauled the number of bales hauled in a day will be far greater tube style because of the time efficiencies. #2. Depending on the diameter of bales being hauled the load will be wider tube style rather than ends out. In most areas an over wide permit is required regardless if the load is 10 4 or 12 feet. Grouping Bales The most efficient method of grouping bales is to bring them to the center of the field and set them in trailer size loads (quantities) equally spaced from one end of the field to the other. For example, if the operator were starting at the south end of the field and working north the operator would equally space the groups in the center of the field from the south end of the field to the north end. Grouping the bales makes for far less (overall) driving in the hay field. A 53 trailer will carry 30 bales (three bale cart loads). If a hay field (a quarter section in width) is producing just over a ton and a half of hay per acre the groups will be set less than 200 feet apart from each other (a short walk back to get the loader tractor if only one operator is doing both loading and hauling). 2 of 3

3 There is nothing more efficient, time wise and manpower wise, than using a Haukaas Bale Cart to gather and set bales. 5 Center Loading Between Rows Drawings show 70 diameter bales 60 long (5 ) being loaded on a 53 flat deck trailer. 30 bales to a trailer. Drive the trailer between rows. Stop when front of trailer is in line with the front of the front of bale. This drawing shows the distance between the trailer (empty) and the rows of bales. Loading 2 bales at a time with the grapple. Virtually no driving with grapple loaded. Empty driving in and empty backing out. Load the first 10 bales (5 grapple loads). Load the opposite side of the trailer. Move rear bale to other row to make an even number of bales in both rows. This drawing shows the distance between the trailer with bales loaded and the rows.
