3 Harrods Creek Arch Bridge Widening Case Study #1 Located on River Road over Harrods Creek near Prospect, Kentucky, 10 miles northeast of Louisville River Road is a Kentucky Scenic Byway and the bridge is located within the Harrods Creek Historic District Description of Bridge Built circa 1910; grade raised in 1912 Total Length ~ 212 feet Three span, reinforced concrete, filled-spandrel arch 3

4 Significant Issues Associated With Project Bridge became eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places after the project began Case Study #1 Widening the bridge from one lane to two while preserving the historic character of the bridge Organized and well-funded opposition 4

7 Case Study #1 Other Significant Issues Associated With Project Widen narrow existing bridge from one lane to two without altering the historic characteristics of the bridge The concrete balustrade railing had to be replicated No new loads could be transmitted onto the existing arches Repair deteriorated areas of the existing arches 7

8 Case Study #1 How Significant Issues Were Resolved Build a new prestressed concrete bridge inside of the existing arches: Remove existing concrete balustrade railings and some of the rubble infill down to the crowns of the existing arch rings Install micropiles by drilling down through the existing infill and pier stems and anchor 12 feet into solid rock Install drilled shafts by similar methods at the abutments Prestressed box beams span over and clear the arch crowns 8

9 Case Study #1 How Significant Issues Were Resolved Prestressed concrete box beams were located between existing spandrel walls The deck is comprised of twenty ~ 32 wide transversely prestressed concrete deck panels, which cantilever out 7-9 beyond the edge of box beams New concrete architectural bridge railing was cast-in-place after erecting the deck panels 9

21 Lessons Learned/Conclusions Working on this historic structure required the team to address a unique set of design and construction challenges. Case Study #1 The design concept that was adopted and the technologies employed to widen rehabilitate this structure will provide a comparative baseline for similar projects in the future. Even though the project was initially met with organized opposition, once the project was completed, public feedback indicated that it was perceived as an overall success. 21
