3 1.0 SCOPE 1.1 This specification establishes the minimum requirements for the water penetration resistance and structural load performance of locking/latching hardware used in side-hinged door systems. 1.2 This specification applies only to locking/latching hardware that is not validated for use through testing in the same or equivalent series/model/design side-hinged door system in which it is to be provided to the marketplace. The hardware rating achieved under this specification shall be equal to or greater than the Performance Grade of the side-hinged door system in which it is installed. 1.3 Locking hardware shall be rated to conform with the Performance Grade (Design Pressure) rating described in the NAFS-2 based upon water penetration resistance and structural load performance. 1.4 The Structural Load Rating is representative of the equivalent Performance Grade of the side-hinged door system in which the locking/latching hardware is to be installed. Applied Loads indicated in section 4.5 are calculated based on the Uniform Structural Load and the minimum test specimen size of side-hinged door system that qualifies all Performance Classes for each equivalent Performance Grade. 1.5 Accommodation is made to designate locking/latching hardware that is suitable for use in Architectural Class Products requiring a higher water penetration resistance test requirement. 2.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS AAMA American Architectural Manufacturers Association 101/I.S. 2/NAFS-02 Voluntary Performance Specification for Windows, Skylights and Glass Doors, a North American Fenestration Standard ASTM American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM E Standard Test Method for Water Penetration of Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference. BHMA Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association ANSI/BHMA A156.2 (1996) American National Standard for Bored and Preassembled Locks & Latches ANSI/BHMA A (1992) American National Standard for Interconnected Locks & Latches ANSI/BHMA A (1994) American National Standard for Mortise Locks & Latches 3.0 SIGNIFICANCE & USE 3.1 Window products are typically tested and rated for performance with all of the components and hardware that will be supplied with the product to the marketplace. This, however, is not the case for all side-hinged door systems. It is common for such doors to be provided to the marketplace without locking/latching hardware. This allows the end-user to choose locking/latching hardware for the installed door system based upon options, features, aesthetics, ect. Such practice is typical of the door jobber /pre-hanger distribution channels. 3.2 Side-hinged exterior door systems tested under NAFS- 2 include all locking/latching hardware necessary to meet the performance requirements of the specification. This hardware, however, may not be that supplied with the door to the market. Furthermore, as side-hinged doors may be supplied without hardware, it becomes necessary for locking/latching hardware to be purchased in the retail after-market and fitted into the door system following installation. 3.3 As the locking/latching hardware is an essential component of the side-hinged exterior door system, it is necessary to ensure that it does not compromise the performance of the side-hinged door system in which it is installed. This is of greatest concern where the locking/latching hardware is fitted to a side-hinged door after it leaves the control of the manufacturer. For this reason, locking/latching hardware that is provided to the marketplace for after-market installation must be independently tested and validated for performance that is equivalent to or better than the side-hinged door system in which it is installed. 3.4 Locking/latching hardware that successfully passes the requirements of this specification to a given performance rating shall have the achieved rating permanently identified on the hardware for verification in the field of the performance of the installed and complete side-hinged door system. 4.0 RATING 4.1 Locking/latching hardware shall be rated for water penetration resistance based upon the maximum differential pressure achieved when tested in accordance with ASTM E 331 for a period of fifteen (15) minutes. 4 4.2 The water penetration resistance rating reflects the equivalent Performance Grade (Design Pressure) that the locking hardware successfully passed. When tested at less than 150 Pa (3.00 psf) hardware shall be rated limited water and designated LW. 4.3 Locking/latching hardware is tested and rated for water penetration resistance separately for use in in-swing and out-swing side-hinged door system configurations. 4.4 Structural load performance testing shall be performed in accordance with the procedures of the Bolt Strength Test section of the following applicable ANSI/BHMA standards: Locking/Latching Hardware Type ANSI/BHMA Standard Bored and Preassembled Locks & A156.2 Latches Interconnected Locks & Latches A Mortise Locks & Latches A The Structural Load Rating reflects the Minimum Bolt Strength test load in Newtons (lbf) correlating to the equivalent Uniform Load Structural Test for the Performance Grade (Design Pressure) that the locking hardware successfully passed based upon the following rating matrix: Structural Load Rating Minimum Bolt Strength N (lbf) Minimum Equivalent BHMA Grade (220) Grade 3 Single (295) Grade 3 Single (385) Grade 3 Single (510) Grade 3 Single (595) Grade 3 Single (930) Grade 1 Single OR Grade 3 Double (1050) Grade 1 Single OR Grade 3 Double (1165) Grade 1 Single OR Grade 3 Double (1280) Grade 2 Double (1395) Grade 2 Double (1515) Grade 2 Double (1630) Grade 2 Double (1745) Grade 2 Double (1860) Grade 2 Double (1980) Grade 1 Double (2095) Grade 1 Double (2210) Grade 1 Double (2325) Grade 1 Double (2560) N/A - test as stand alone assembly Note: Single identifies one (1) locking/latching point (e.g., passage latch); Double identifies two (2) distinct locking/latching points (e.g., passage latch & deadbolt) 4.6 The format for locking/latching hardware performance rating is: SLR/PG i i /PG o o Where: SLR = structural load rating PG i = the equivalent water penetration resistance performance grade achieved for inswing applications PG o = the equivalent water penetration resistance performance grade achieved for outswing applications For example, a locking/latching hardware system achieves the following: ¾ Inswing water penetration resistance testing equivalent to a Performance Grade (Design Pressure) 25 [180 Pa (3.75 psf) differential pressure] ¾ Outswing water penetration resistance testing equivalent to a Performance Grade (Design Pressure) 15 [140 Pa (2.86 psf) differential pressure] ¾ Structural load testing of 9635 N (2166 lbf) Rating = 70/25i/15 o 4.7 As Architectural Class products are tested for water penetration resistance at a higher differential test pressure than all other Performance Classes at the same Performance Grade (i.e., AW water = 20% design pressure vs. 15% design pressure for all others), a superscript AW is added to the water penetration resistance rating to designate locking/latching hardware that is suitable for use with these products. An example rating is: 70/60i AW /45 0 AW AAMA Page 2

5 5.0 TESTING FACILITIES 5.1 Testing shall be performed at an AAMA Accredited Laboratory. 6.0 TESTING APPARATUS 6.1 Water Penetration Resistance The testing apparatus shall consist of a 900 mm x 2000 mm x 45 mm (36 in x 80 in x 1 3/4 in) non-porous, solid core door leaf mounted in a standard steel door frame The locking/latching hardware test specimen shall be mounted at the approximate vertical mid-point of the door leaf and at a distance from the edge of the door leaf as specified by the hardware manufacturer No more than two test specimens shall be installed in a single test door leaf along a common horizontal centerline Margin gap between door leaf and door frame shall be 1/8 inch ± 1/16 inch any location around the perimeter of the door leaf The apparatus and set-up shall be such to ensure that extraneous leakage through and/or around the test assembly shall not interfere with the performance evaluation of the test specimen(s). 6.2 Structural Load Performance The test apparatus shall be as detailed in applicable ANSI/BHMA hardware specification referenced in Section 4.4 for the hardware type being tested. 7.0 TEST SPECIMENS 7.1 The hardware manufacturer shall submit three (3) specimens representative of a locking/latching hardware series where the only differences between members of the product series are aesthetic and/or non-functional. Each different product design, style, series or series modification resulting in different operational characteristics, materials, material thicknesses and/or construction methods shall be tested separately as individual locking/latching hardware series. 7.2 Randomly select two samples from three available. These two shall be tested for compliance to this specification. 8.0 TEST PROCEDURE 8.1. Water Penetration Resistance Mount the locking/latching hardware specimen(s) in test leaf in accordance with hardware manufacturer s installation instructions Operate the specimen five (5) times to ensure proper operation and function Test in accordance with ASTM E 331 in both inswing and outswing configurations or as specified by the hardware manufacturer The differential test pressure shall be that specified for Water Penetration Resistance testing in NAFS-2 for the equivalent Performance Grade (Design Pressure) of side-hinged door in which the locking/latching hardware is to be verified for use Architectural Class products have water penetration resistance testing performed at 20% of Design Pressure vs. 15% for all other Classes. If locking/latching hardware is intended for use in Architectural Class products then this higher differential test pressure shall be used. 8.2 Structural Load Performance Mount the locking/latching hardware specimen in accordance with the applicable ANSI/BHMA hardware specification referenced in Section 4.4 for the hardware type being tested Operate the specimen five (5) times to ensure proper operation and function Perform testing in accordance with the Bolt Strength Test section of the referenced ANSI/BHMA specification. Apply load in direction that will tend to open the door leaf away from the frame stop Apply the first load from the test matrix detailed in Section 4.5 or as specified by manufacturer. Maintain the load for a duration of ten (10) seconds and release Allow the unloaded specimen to recover for a period no less than ten (10) seconds. Operate the specimen Repeat through through the entire loading sequence until the test specimen fails or as specified by the hardware manufacturer. AAMA Page 3

6 9.0 PASS/FAILURE CRITERIA 9.1 There shall be no water penetration through or around the locking/latching hardware mechanism or its installation as defined in ASTM E 331 at the specified differential test pressure. 9.2 There shall be no release of the door test leaf from the test frame due to disengagement or failure of the locking/latching hardware mechanism when subjected to the specified structural loading. 9.3 The locking/latching hardware mechanism shall be fully operable following the completion of each structural load test TEST REPORT (Shall include the following) 10.1 Date of testing and date of report Identification of the specimens tested by product line/model number and name (or by series number and name if the test is to verify compliance of a series of locking/latching hardware) The maximum differential test pressure passed for the Water Penetration Resistance test The maximum Bolt Strength passed for the Structural Load Performance test A statement addressing the operability of the tested specimen following the completion of the maximum passed Structural Load Performance test The rating of the locking/latching hardware in accordance with Sections 4.6 and 4.7 of this specification A statement that all tests were conducted in accordance with this specification Name and address of the laboratory that conducted the tests and issued the report.
