4 Safety Glazing in Hazardous Locations Door Required in all lites, standard in all Milgard doors Adjacent to Doors Safety glazing is required in windows adjacent to a door where the nearest exposed edge of the glazing is within a 24 arch of either vertical edge of the door in a closed position and where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing is less than 60 inches above the walking surface. Tub/Shower Enclosures Safety glazing is required in windows where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing is less than 60 above a standing surface and drain inlet

5 Safety Glazing in Hazardous Locations Proximity to Floors Required when all the following conditions are met: o Exposed area of an individual pane is greater than 9 sq. ft. o Exposed bottom edge less than 18 above the floor o Exposed top edge greater than 36 above the floor o One or more walking surface within 36 horizontally of the plane of the glazing

7 Egress Requirement Required in basements with habitable space and all bedrooms (below 4 th story) Egress windows allow for emergency escape and rescue Windows must meet the following 4 requirements: A minimum net clear opening width of 20 A minimum net clear opening height of 24 A minimum net clear opening of 5.7 sq. ft. A maximum finished sill height of no more than 44 from the finished floor

9 Testing Standards-AAMA AAMA-American Architectural Manufacturers Assoc. Resistance to air infiltration Air chamber that simulates 25 mph of wind Air chamber that simulates 25 mph of wind Resistance to water leakage Water is added to the test, pressure is upped to simulate stronger wind, typically 40 mph 4 cycles of 5 minutes each with 1 minute rest between Water can build up in the track but must not spill to the interior

10 Testing Standards-AAMA Structural adequacy to withstand wind loads Interior vacuum pressure is added to the window to simulate window blowing around a corner, no water This test has the closest relationship to the final structural class rating Forced entry Person tries to break into the window, can use putty knives, screwdrivers, try to deglaze, etc. 200 lbs. of force applied to window in the opening direction combined with less force in other directions 800 lbs. of force applied to doors in the opening direction combined with less force in other directions

14 Testing Standards-NFRC NFRC- National Fenestration Rating Council U-Factors Window installed in chamber to maintain 0 degrees on the exterior and 70 degrees on the interior with a 15 mph wind. Must maintain the 70 degree difference for 2 hours. Measures the amount of energy required to maintain the 70 degree side Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) Indicates the percentage of solar heat energy that makes its way through the glazing under standard summer conditions The lower the #, the greater the amount of heat reduction

15 Energy Ratings U-Factor Measures the heat gain or loss caused by differences in indoor and outdoor temperatures. The lower the #, the better R-Value = 1 divided by the U-Factor.34 U-Factor = 2.94 R-Value
