1 SECTION *(Filed Sub-Bid Required) PART 1 GENERAL 1.00 TIME, MANNER AND REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMITTING SUB-BIDS A. Sub-bids shall be submitted in accordance with provisions of the General Laws (Ter. Ed.), Chapter 149, Section 44A to 44L, inclusive, as amended. The time and place for submission to Sub-Bids shall be set forth under INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS. B. Each Sub-Bid filed with the Awarding Authority must be accompanied by BID BOND, CASH, or CERTIFIED CHECK, or a TREASURER'S CHECK or CASHIER'S CHECK issued by a responsible bank or trust company, payable to the Town of Douglas, in the amount stipulated in the INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS. A Sub-Bid accompanied by any other form of bid deposit than those specified will be rejected. C. Each Sub-Bid submitted for the work, under this SECTION, shall be on a form furnished by the Awarding Authority, as required by SECTION 44F of Chapter 149 of the General Laws, as amended. D. Work to be done under this SECTION is shown on Contract Drawings. Remaining Contract Drawings are included for reference and coordination GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. PART A and DIVISION 1 of PART B are hereby made a part of this SECTION. B. Examine all conditions as they exist at the project prior to submitting a sub-bid for the work of this SECTION SCOPE OF WORK A. Furnish and install the following, as shown on the Drawings and specified herein: 1. Exterior galvanized steel railings and galvanized steel areaway gate. 2. Interior steel stairs, including intermediate landings and landing structure. 3. Interior steel railings, guards, and associated hardware. 4. Interior and exterior access ladders, ships ladders and elevator pit ladders

2 5. All other items designated SECTION or Miscellaneous Iron on the Drawings. B. The work of SECTION MISCELLANEOUS METALS shall be included in the sub bid for this section. C. Perform all shop painting and touch up after erection, as specified hereunder. D. Furnish the following, for installation under the designated SECTIONS. 1. Anchor bolts, inserts and sleeves, required to attach miscellaneous iron items to concrete and masonry: SECTION CONCRETE and SECTION MASONRY. E. This subcontractor shall furnish, install and maintain in a safe, adequate condition all staging and scaffolding that are necessary for the proper execution of the work of this SECTION RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE A. The following related work is to be performed under the designated SECTIONS: 1. Exterior aluminum fencing: SECTION FENCING. 2. Structural steel items, including auditorium catwalks, all attached lintels, relieving angles and other steel shapes shown on the Drawings, not specified hereunder: SECTION STRUCTURAL STEEL. 3. Manufactured metal items in conjunction with millwork: SECTION FINISH CARPENTRY. 4. Finish painting of miscellaneous and ornamental iron items: SECTION PAINTING STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS (MASS BUILDING CODE) A. Metal stair assembly shall carry a minimum uniform live load of 100 pounds per square foot of projected plan area, or a minimum concentrated load of 300 pounds on an area of 4 square inches applied at the center of any tread span, whichever produces the greater stresses. B. Railing and barriers around stairways, stairwells, balconies, and other floor openings, both exterior and interior, shall be designed to resist a concentrated load of at least two hundred (200) pounds applied in any direction at any point of the top rail, and they shall also be designed for a uniformly distributed load of one hundred (100) pounds per linear foot applied vertically simultaneously with fifty (50) pounds per lineal foot horizontally at the top railing. Handrails shall be designed for a uniformly distributed load of fifty (50) pounds per linear foot applied in any direction. The concentrated load and distributed loads need not be assumed to act concurrently

3 1.05 SUBMITTALS A. Submit the complete shop drawings in accordance with the requirements of SECTION SUBMITTALS. B. Include large-scale details of items specified herein, showing proposed methods of anchorage to surrounding structure. C. Include with shop drawings all engineering computations for stairs, railings and barriers furnished under this Section, prepared and stamped by a Structural Engineer registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. D. Each field piece shall be marked plainly with suitable erection marks, which shall also be shown on the shop drawings. E. Submit notarized certificate of compliance from the galvanizer, stating requirements for galvanizing specified herein have been met. F. Certification - Prior to commencing installation of materials required hereunder, furnish the Architect with certification that requirements pertaining to shop painting have been performed in the manner specified JOB CONDITIONS A. Be responsible for location and levels of all work of this SECTION, except such parts as may be delivered to others and set by them. In such cases assist them in properly locating said parts. B. Furnish anchorage items and other items required to be built into the concrete or masonry to the job at the proper time and include instructions and/or templates for their installation ALTERNATES A. Examine SECTION ALTERNATES for Scope of Work that may affect the work of this Section and include any deletions or additions in the Form for Subbid under the appropriate alternate

4 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 METALS AND METAL TREATMENTS A. General 1. Standard products meeting the detailed requirements of the miscellaneous and ornamental iron items required hereunder will be considered for approval by the Architect. 2. Provide all supplemental parts necessary to complete each miscellaneous metal item whether or not such parts are shown and specified. Provide all anchorage for securing the work required hereunder. 3. Provide only new metals, free from defects impairing strength, durability, and of the commercial quality specified. 4. Curved work shall be true to radii, with smooth finished surfaces unless otherwise specified. 5. Provide fastenings of the same material, color and finish, as the metal to which applied unless otherwise noted. B. Steel shapes, plates, and bars - Conforming to the requirements of Standard Specifications for Steel for Bridges and Buildings, ASTM Designation A 36. C. Steel pipe - Schedule 40 or stronger, seamless steel, of the sizes indicated on the Drawings, galvanized when used on exterior, of sufficient strength to meet the structural requirements of this SECTION. D. Pipe sleeves - Hot-dipped galvanized steel, having inside dimension of 1/4 inch greater than outside diameter of post to be inserted therein. E. Hydraulic cement, for installing bolts and fastenings into masonry and concrete - Quick setting, non-staining type, Porok, or equal. F. Bolts, nuts, and washers for field or shop connections - Galvanized, nuts retapped to fit, for all galvanized structural steel elements. G. Guard infill mesh panels Weld mesh, by McNichols or equal, washed copper finish, bright drawn steel wire with all intersections electrically welded as follows: 1. Rectangular Mesh 3 inches x 1 inch x 9 gauge H. Bar grate Hot dipped galvanized, rectangular bar sizes and spacing as shown on the Drawings

5 I. Galvanizing - All metal fabrications indicated to be galvanized on the Drawings or specified hereunder to be galvanized, shall conform to the requirements of the latest edition of the following ASTM Reference Standards: A123, A153, A143, A384, A385 and A780. Fabricated steel shall be galvanized by the hot-dip process conforming to the requirements of ASTM A123, latest edition with the addition of.05 to.09 percent nickel and other earthly materials to the galvanizing kettle forming an alloy, DELTAGALV by Duncan Galvanizing or approved equal meeting all requirements of this specification. Provide thickness of galvanizing specified in referenced standards. To prevent flux inclusions and entrapment, the steel shall be immersed in a bath of zinc ammonium chloride prior to galvanizing. The use of the wet kettle process shall be prohibited. Wherever possible, perform galvanizing after assembly of items. Only where items are too large for galvanizing tanks will galvanizing before assembly be acceptable. Each galvanized piece shall bear the stamp of the galvanizing processing firm indicating the ASTM Specification Number and the weight of the nickel zinc coating per square foot. J. Shop priming and touch-up paint for non-galvanized steel - Tnemec 37 H-78 high solids, gray universal primer, or approved equal

6 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 WORKMANSHIP AND FABRICATION A. Shop-fabricate items wherever practicable, accurately fitting all parts and making all joints fit tight. B. Grind all edges of bar and plates completely free from nicks and machine marks, prior to galvanizing and/or shop priming. C. Make all welds in a continuous manner, using equipment and methods which are recognized to be the best in modern practice. Grind all welds completely smooth and to the surface plane of the base metals. Perform welding work prior to galvanizing in all cases, except where field welding is necessary, in which case completely coat all such welds in a cold liquid galvanizing, Z.R.C., Galvicon, Zirp, or approved equal, after performing grinding operations. D. Draw up all threaded connections tightly, after butting same with pipe-joint compound, to exclude water. E. Use only screws and bolts of sufficient size to assure against loosening from normal usage of miscellaneous metal items furnished hereunder. F. Wherever the underside of steel pan stair construction is exposed to view, seams shall be either continuously welded or a seam sealer applied before the concrete fill is placed, to eliminate ongoing leaks and streaking on the exposed underside RAILINGS IN PIPE SLEEVES A. Insert vertical pipe rail members into sleeves, shim with lead wedges, and fill the sleeve with hydraulic cement, level with the surrounding surface. Set sleeves to a depth of six inches, minimum. B. Handrails - To withstand loads specified by paragraph SHOP PAINTING AND TOUCH-UP OF NON-GALVANIZED STEEL A. Surface preparation of steel - Thoroughly clean all steel of all loose mill scale by power wire brushing or sand-blasting. Remove all rust, dirt, weld flux, weld splatter, and other foreign matter by wire brushing or scraping (power wire brushing, if necessary). Grind smooth any sharp projections. Remove oil and grease deposits with solvent. B. Shop painting - All non-galvanized steel members shall be painted before shipping. All surfaces shall be painted except surfaces which are to be welded, and surfaces to be encased in masonry. Paint shall be applied thoroughly and evenly on the surfaces and worked in to the joints and other open areas on the surfaces. Dry mil thickness per coat of prime paint shall not be less than 2.4 mils. C. Touch-up - After erection, touch-up all abrasions and field welds with same paint on shop coat. END OF SECTION
