This type of flooring is found in many commercial and institutional buildings such as offices, retail spaces, schools and gymnasiums. VCT provides a versatile, low cost product that provides durability in high traffic situations. VCT is traditionally sold in a 12 x 12 (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm) tile but can come a variety of patterns and colours. If properly installed, tiles can be easily removed and replaced when damaged. The primary element in vinyl composite tile is a filler material called limestone and accounts for over 65% of its composition. VCT is also composed of colored PVC (polyvinyl chloride) chips formed into solid sheets of varying thicknesses (1/8" - 3mm is most common) by heat and pressure. Vinyl Composite Tiles have high resilience to both abrasion and impact damage and can be repeatedly stripped and refinished using high ph chemical strippers and mechanical buffing equipment. In commercial applications, tiles are typically sealed, finished and maintained using either low or high speed procedures. When working with a new VCT floor, maximizing the floor s benefits will depend on how well it is cared for from the very start. While each manufacturer has its own unique selling points, this guide will look at some of the key procedures to keeping your flooring asset looking its best in a commercial setting. 3 Initial Cleaning Use This Product VCT safe product such as Vardet 383 (1:64 15 ml/l). Click on picture to learn more. A dust mop, vacuum, wet/dry mop, bucket w/wringer, autoscrubber, rotary floor machine ( rpm), 3M blue pad and wet vacuum. NOTE The suggested wait time is a minimum 72 hours after installation before you should start any maintenance procedure. Consult your flooring specifications before commencing any cleaning program. 1. Place wet floor signs around the area to be cleaned. 2. Remove dry soils using a dust mop or vacuum. 3. Fill a bucket or autoscrubber with Vardet 383 (1:64-15ml/L) and cool water. Apply generously to the floor and allow to dwell for 10 minutes. Do not allow the solution to dry on the floor. 4. Using a low-speed buffer or autoscrubber, scrub the floor using a 3M 5300 Blue pad. 5. Pick up the solution with a wet/dry vacuum or autoscrubber. 6. Rinse the floor with clean water and allow to dry thoroughly. Remove wet floor signs. VCT is manufactured with a temporary Here s A Tip factory finish to protect the tile during transportation and installation. This factory finish must be thoroughly removed before you apply any additional sealer or finish. 3

4 Additional Protection - Sealer and Finish Use These Products VCT safe products such as Eternal Pro +, Satin, Vert-2-Go Armor, Forte or Vert-2-Go Shield. Finish mop, handle, bucket w/wringer, garbage bags, 3M Microfibre finish system. Applying Floor Sealer and Finish 1. Using a microfiber finish system or finish mop, apply a coat of Vert-2-Go Shield floor sealer at a rate of 1500 SQF/G (400 SQF/L). If using a traditional finish mop, pre-soak the mop in clean water for 30 minutes prior to use and line the bucket with a garbage bag to provide an uncontaminated surface. First frame out a 3-sided workable area and then fill in using figure 8 motions. Do not rush to avoid streaking. Under ideal conditions, allow minutes for proper dry time. 2. Once properly dried, apply a second coat of Vert-2-Go Shield floor sealer and allow to properly dry. Use the same application technique, but apply in the opposite direction as the previous coat. (Two coats of Vert-2-Go Shield floor sealer is recommended for new installations and will provide added protection from staining.) 3. Once the sealer has dried, use a new finish mop to apply the floor finish. Finish options will vary based on your maintenance type and frequency. It is best to alternate directions on each coat to ensure even coverage. Apply the floor finish at a rate of SQF/G ( SQF/L). Do not rush to avoid streaking. 4. Depending on available time and traffic levels at your site, for optimal protection, apply 4 or more coats of floor finish. Under ideal conditions, allow minutes dry time between coats to ensure the finish has properly cured. DO NOT APPLY MORE THAN 4 COATS OF SEALER OR FINISH IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD. 4

5 Daily Cleaning Use These Products VCT safe products such as Vert-2-Go Floor Cleaner or Pathfinder. A dust mop, vacuum, wet mop, bucket w/wringer, autoscrubber, 3M 5100 Red pad, 3M 5000 Topline autoscrubber pad. 1. Place wet floor signs around the area to be cleaned. 2. Remove dry soils using a dust mop or vacuum. 3. Fill a bucket, microfibre system or autoscrubber with Vert-2-Go Floor Cleaner (dilution 1:64, 15 ml/l) or Pathfinder (dilution 1:128, 7.5 ml/l) and cool water. Damp mop the floor or if using an autoscrubber, scrub the floor with a 3M 5000 TopLine autoscrubber pad and pick-up the solution. 4. Allow to dry thoroughly then remove wet floor signs. A buffing machine ( rpm), 3M Red or Blue pad, Taski Ergodisc 1200, 2000 RPM electric burnisher, Chariot I-gloss 20 burnisher and proper burnishing pad Applying a Buffing Compound a. Buffing - Use a buffing machine ( rpm) and a 3M red (5100) pad. Apply Vert-2-Go Quicksnap as per label directions. Continue to buff floor until desired shine is achieved. For a low-gloss finish, use the same process but substitute a 3M 5300 Blue pad. b. High Speed Refurbishing - If a higher shine is desired, use a Taski Ergodisc 1200 equipped with the proper burnishing pad. Apply Vert-2-Go Quicksnap as per label directions and continue to buff floor until desired shine is achieved. Consult a Wood Wyant Expert for the proper pad selection. Dry Burnishing c. Electric Burnishing Using a 2000 RPM floor burnisher, burnish the floor in straight-line pattern, overlapping each pass by 2 (5 cm), until all areas have been even covered. It is important to always be in motion when stopping or starting the machine. The pad choice is dependent on the frequency. Consult a Wood Wyant Expert for the proper pad selection. d. Battery Burnishing Using a Chariot I-gloss or walk behind burnisher, burnish the floor in straight-line pattern, overlapping each pass by 2 (5 cm), until all areas have been even covered. It is important to always be in motion when stopping or starting the machine. The pad choice is dependent on the frequency. Consult a Wood Wyant Expert for the proper pad selection. 6

7 Periodic Deep Cleaning Use These Products VCT safe product such as Vert-2-Go Optiscrub. Click on picture to learn more. SPP pad, 3M blue pad (5300), autoscrubber, buffer ( rpm), wet-dry vac, bucket, wet mop, mop handle, dust mop. 1. Place wet floor signs around the area to be cleaned. 2. Remove dry soils using a dust mop or vacuum. 3. Properly dilute Vert-2-Go Optiscrub (1: 64, 15 ml/l) with cool water and fill a mop bucket or an autoscrubber. Apply the solution generously to the floor and allow to work for 7-10 minutes. 4. Using a rotary floor machine or an autoscrubber, scrub the floor using a 3M Surface Prep Pad (SPP) or 3M 5300 Blue pad and pick up the solution. 5. Using clean, cool water, rinse the floor. Use a new mop or floor pad for this step. Pick up rinse water with a wet/dry vacuum or an autoscrubber. 6. Allow the floor to dry thoroughly then apply 1-2 coats of new floor finish as per instructions on page 4 applying additional protection. 7. Remove wet floor signs. 8 Floor Stripping Use These Products VCT safe strippers such as Pro Strip+ or Liquid Chisel. A dust mop, vacuum, wet /dry vacuum, putty knife, a rotary floor machine (175rpm), equipped with a 3M black (7200) pad or 3M Hi-pro black (7300) pad, bucket, cotton mop. 1. Remove dry soils using a dust mop or vacuum. As you dust mop, use your putty knife to remove gum, sticky labels, etc. from the floor. 2. Following the label directions, fill a mop bucket with Pro Strip + floor stripper diluted at 1: 4 (200 ml/l) or Liquid Chisel floor stripper diluted at 1: 12 (75 ml/l) with cool water and apply generously to the floor. Allow the solution to dwell on the floor for 10 minutes. It is important that you give the chemical enough time to work properly before scrubbing the floor. 3. Scrub with a low speed 175 rpm floor buffing machine and a 3M 7200 Black or 3M Hi-pro 7300 Black stripping pad (for extreme accumulation of finish). 4. Pick up the slurry with a wet/dry vacuum. 5. Rinse the floor using a second bucket & wringer and a clean mop. Alternatively, an autoscrubber filled with cool, clean water may be used. 6. Remove the water with a wet/dry vacuum or autoscrubber. 7. Continue to rinse until all floor finish residue has been removed. Allow the floor to dry thoroughly before applying new protective coats of finish as outlined on page 4 Additional Protection. Here s A Tip When daily cleaning, deep scrubbing and maintenance procedures no longer restore the floor to its desired lustre, all layers of finish will need to be removed using both physical and chemical actions in a process called floor stripping. 8
