1 Evaluation Report CCMC R ZIP System Sheathing and Tape MasterFormat: Evaluation issued: Revised date: Re-evaluation due: Opinion It is the opinion of the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) that ZIP System Sheathing and Tape, when used as combined exterior wall sheathing incorporating an integral sheathing membrane, in accordance with the conditions and limitations stated in Section 3 of this Report, complies with the National Building Code (NBC) of Canada 2010: Clause (1)(a), Division A, using the following acceptable solutions from Division B: Sentence (1), Table B., Rating for Wall Sheathing when Applying CSA O325 (for OSB wall sheathing qualification) Clause (1)(b), Division A, as an alternative solution that achieves at least the minimum level of performance required by Division B in the areas defined by the objectives and functional statements attributed to the following applicable acceptable solutions: Article , Sheathing Membrane Material Standard Article , Required Sheathing Membrane and Installation This opinion is based on the CCMC evaluation of the technical evidence in Section 4 provided by the Report Holder. Ruling No (14019-R) authorizing the use of this product in Ontario, subject to the terms and conditions contained in the Ruling, was made by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing on pursuant to s.29 of the Building Code Act, 1992 (see Ruling for terms and conditions). This Ruling is subject to periodic revisions and updates. 2. Description This Report addresses the performance of the system as an oriented strandboard (OSB) wood-based sheathing incorporating an integral sheathing membrane. The ZIP System Sheathing and Tape, after installation is complete, qualifies as the second plane of protection against water penetration from rainwater. The product comprises three components: (i) the OSB wall sheathing; (ii) the proprietary coating on the OSB panel; and (iii) the proprietary ZIP System Flexible Flashing Tape that seals the panel joints. The OSB base sheathing complies with CSA O325, Construction Sheathing, for exterior wall applications for the requisite stud spacing. The OSB has an in-plant laminated sheathing membrane which is a polymer modified sheet overlay applied during the OSB manufacturing process. There are two overlay colours: the 11 mm (7/16 in.) thick OSB is green and the 12.5 mm (½ in.) and 15.8 mm (⅝ in.) thick OSB are sienna. Panels are then sealed at panel joints with ZIP System Flexible Flashing Tape which is black. The taping/sealing of the proprietary panel completes the system as the inner boundary of the NBCspecified second plane of protection. In addition, as the integral sheathing membrane OSB with sealed joints has a water vapour permeance of less than 60 ng/pa s m 2, the product is a low permeance material installed on the cold side. As a result, the exterior wall assembly must comply with Subsection , Properties and Position of Materials in the Building Envelope, of Division B of the NBC 2010 with respect to the outboard insulation in accordance with Table for the respective heating degree day (HDD) of the geographical location of the building. Figure 1 shows a compliant installation with the required exterior insulation. 1 of 5
2 Figure 1. ZIP System Sheathing and Tape with required outboard insulation 3. Conditions and Limitations The CCMC compliance opinion in Section 1 is bound by ZIP System Sheathing and Tape being used in accordance with the conditions and limitations set out below: The system acts as both a wall sheathing and a sheathing membrane and each function must comply with the respective installation requirements as outlined below. The OSB thickness/span rating must be that for the installed stud spacing (see marking on backside). For the proprietary OSB to perform as the inner boundary of the second plane of protection, the OSB with an integral sheathing membrane must be sealed at panel joints with ZIP System Flexible Flashing Tape. To dissipate any rainwater to the exterior, the second plane of protection is completed with flashing material at the bottom of the product as specified in Articles , Flashing Materials, and , Flashing Installation, of Division B of the NBC Exterior insulation must be installed with the product. The amount of insulation must comply with Table of Division B of the NBC 2010 for the requisite ratio of outboard to inboard thermal resistance. The system must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer s installation instructions outlined in the Huber Engineered Wood document, ZIP System Sheathing and Tape Installation Manual Canada, HUB No. 8274, revised August As with all sheathing membranes, the product must be clad and protected from ultraviolet (UV) light within 60 days of installation. The product must be clearly labelled with CCMC R. 4. Technical Evidence The CCMC Technical Guide for OSB Wall Sheathing Laminated (In-Plant) with Sheathing Membrane sets out the nature of the technical evidence required by CCMC to enable it to evaluate a product as an alternative solution in compliance with the NBC The Report Holder has submitted test results and other data for the CCMC evaluation. Testing was conducted at an independent laboratory recognized by CCMC. The corresponding test results for the product are summarized below. 2 of 5

No visible signs of water penetration as viewed from back of panel. Pass Notes to Table 4.1.1: 1. Deemed satisfactory for the intended application. Although results exceed the criteria slightly, the protocol and criteria are based on a water column which may form within a cross-linked adhesive band of notched trowel applied adhesive behind an exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS). The insulation over the product is to be installed with fasteners and no water column formation is expected. 2. Wood-frame wall panels were constructed and sheathed with the product with integral sheathing membrane OSB panels and taped joints. The entire system was subjected to the racking loads and aging protocols. Tests were conducted before and after aging of specimens that involved heat aging and dynamic wind loading. 2. The test results are median values. 3. For wood-based substrates, the water penetration criteria was based on benchmark testing of an acceptable solution (i.e., asphalt impregnated sheathing membrane) typically used in wood-frame construction. 3 of 5
