3 Ruukki on-wall solar is an add-on system to building facades. The solar panels are installed on top of facades. It is also suitable as Ruukki Forma system. It is based on crystal silicon panels which convert solar radiation directly into electricity. Electricity is gathered via cables behind the panels and it is transmitted to an inverter which converts the electricity into alternating current (AC). The system is not depended on solar heating, only on radiation. It can produce electricity also in conditions where there is not direct solar radiation, for example in cloudy or foggy weather. Produced electricity is used directly for the real estate's own purposes or fed to general grid. Performance guarantee: 25 years (module output level 80 % guaranteed for 25 years). 5 DESIGN TOOLS GENERAL Ruukki on-wall solar panel facade is an add-on system, installed on top of facade. Solar facade helps fulfill new requirements for higher energy efficiency and obtaining LEED and BREEAM credits. Ruukki on-wall solar panel is based on a photovoltaic (PV) technology and is of a standard size. Ruukki on-wall solar system does not depend on the warmth of the sun, just on the solar radiation produced. The system also works well in areas where, for example, cloudiness means there are no direct sun rays. The technology used by Ruukki is able to utilise sun rays also in slightly cloudy and foggy weather, even in smog. Ruukki on-wall solar panels on the wall convert sun rays into energy. The electricity is collected by cables and fed into an inverter. This converts the electricity into alternating current, which is the usual form used by electrical appliances in a building. The electricity produced can be used for a property's own electricity needs or fed into the grid. The optimum power production is from a south-facing wall. The benefits to be gained from a facade wall with Ruukki onwall solar panels increase with the amount of solar radiation striking the surface, which is dependent on the building's geographical location and the direction in which the wall is facing. When planning a Ruukki on-wall solar facade, it is recommended to install it on walls facing between Southeast and Southwest. East-facing and West-facing walls are also potentially suitable, but some of the panels's production will be lost. Any obstacles casting a shadow, either on the building itself or on neighbouring buildings, should also be taken into consideration, as should natural shadows cast by vegetation and elevations in the ground surface. Any solar radiation reflected from water or snow cover will increase the panels' output. The number of square metres of the solar panel facade depends either on the capacity required or on the surface area available. Ruukki on-wall solar system is ideal for halls and other buildings with a long facade. It is suitable for new-build and renovation construction alike. Ruukki on-wall panels are suitable for use in condition classes C2-C3 (EN ). If you are dealing with condition class C4, contact Ruukki's technical support. Ruukki on-wall solar has three different sets as standard. It is available also in tailored set sizes. In that case Ruukki's experts will always examine the delivery content on a case-by-case basis together with the customer. PANEL SIZES AND PANEL JOINTS The size of the Ruukki on-wall solar panel is standard, 1605 mm x 975 mm (width x height) with ~25 mm horizontal and 3 mm vertical joints. The depth of the panel is 4 mm. Solar panels are fastened between a horizontal aluminium frame system. Between the aluminium frame and subframe there are vertically installed steel purlins. DIMENSIONING The highest characteristic wind load that can be applied to an individual panel is 2.40 kg/m2. The capacity of the whole system should be checked case by case. The panels are attached to the substructure using vertical support studs and a horizontally installed aluminium frame. The wind suction load will be transferred to the vertical studs via the attachment 5

6 screws and aluminium frame and the pressure load via surface pressure. The substructure to which the support studs are attached must be sufficiently rigid. The weight of the Ruukki on-wall solar facade, including its support studs and other accessories, is about 20 kg/m2. Each panel weighs app. 17 kg. This must be taken into account when accessing the loading endurance of the substructure. The shiny glass facade also places strict restrictions on any measurement deviations in the positioning of the support studs. Since the panels are fastened directly to the support studs without any possibility for adjustment, the support studs must be positioned precisely. FASTENING The panels are fastened between horizontal aluminium profiles. The upper and lower edges of the panel are pushed into a groove in the aluminium profiles. Final positioning of the panels is done with silicon on the joint of two panels. VENTILATION For the Ruukki on-wall solar facade structure to function properly, it is extremely important that its background is ventilated as well as possible, since electrical output can be hampered if the module's temperature rises too high. The vertical support studs used as a standard have a height of 35 mm. It is extremely important that supply air and ventilation gaps of at least 25 mm are left at the top and bottom edges of the facade. This must be taken into account in any discontinuities and non-contiguous areas in the facade. When designing the wall structure, it is important that the ventilation gaps can be easily inspected and maintained annually. ELECTRICAL DESIGN The electrical system must be installed by an electrician with the appropriate qualification for this class of work. The electrician must read the designs and safety guidelines delivered with the system. The installation itself is similar to any typical electrical installation work performed on buildings. Ruukki will deliver a conceptual design of the site, which will set out the size and structure of the planned electrical system and the solutions used in it. The conceptual design will be based on the initial information on the site supplied by the customer. Ruukki will deliver a design of the actual electrical system, indicating the system's structure, components and measurements in more detail. ACCESSORIES Ruukki on-wall solar completed with support studs, flashings, fasteners and electrical components provides a fully finished solar system, as well easy and quick installation.
