1 Manufacturing Specification NS 113 (Effective 01Feb11) Corrosion Protection Specifications Liquid Paint System Performance Level 113 [FC-L113 ] This specification is to serve as a guide of responsibilities and expectations for the painting process between Novum Structures LLC (Novum) and the Paint Applicator [Applicator]. Applicator shall have a standard warranty on file with Novum prior to proceeding with coating application. Project specific warranties shall be supplied upon request by Novum. Liquid Paint System Description Liquid Paint System 113 is a high performance two coat system for extreme exterior environments. Per ISO this is considered a C4 or C5 environment. A zinc-rich primer and a polysiloxane topcoat constitute this system. This system cannot be used for a metallic finish color. The intended service life of this system is better than twenty years. Novum will warrant this system for performance for a period of up to fifteen years, applicator is expected to guarantee their work for a similar time period and provide a written warranty upon request. Applicator is strongly encouraged to use coating products from Novum s preferred paint manufacturers (PPG, Akzo- Nobel, and Carboline). Products use must be backed by a product warranty for the system for the same time frame as stated above in the proper environment. Referenced Standards ASTM D ASTM D ASTM E Standard Terminology for Paint, Related Coatings, Materials and Applications Standard Guide for Painting Inspectors (Metal Substrates) Measuring Coating Thickness by Magnetic-Field or Eddy-Current (Electromagnetic) Test Methods SSPC Painting Manual Volume I Fourth Edition Volume II Fifth Edition Surface Finish Expectations A proper surface finish is critical for the performance of painted surface; therefore the Applicator is to take appropriate measures for proper surface finish aesthetics. Some fabrications by Novum use parts that have high variability in thicknesses, every effort should be made for proper painting. It is the Applicator s responsibility for a proper finish on all surfaces of a fabrication. Surface Preparation Methods and solutions for surface preparation are considered by Novum to be proprietary. The applicator is to refer to Novum Manufacturing Specification NS 102 Corrosion Protection Specifications: Surface Preparation for Coating for information regarding surface preparation requirements. Typical surface preparation is SSPC-SP6, Commercial Blast Cleaning, for bare steel and SSPC-SP7, Brush-off Blast Cleaning, for hot-dip galvanized steel substrates. The Applicator is encouraged to notify Novum of any issues related to surface preparation prior to applying the prime coat. Liquid Paint System All Paints used are to be applied per the manufacturer s recommendations and the guidelines by SSPC. Failures due to the supplied products being deficient will be replaced and costs associated incurred by Novum will be paid at Supplier s Expense. Liquid Paint System over Other Substrates Consult Product Engineering Other Variances Slip-critical bolted connections o Only apply zinc-rich primer coat in slip critical connection areas. Environmental compliance o Coating products from the same series will be used shall be the low VOC and low HAPS versions as required by local environmental regulations. o If no paint in the same series has the required VOC level, an equivalent paint that is approved by Novum Product Engineer shall be used. Projects with Powder and Liquid Paint Coatings o Discuss with Product Engineering for suitable color, gloss, and performance compatibility. Surface Roughness Requirement For proper aesthetics and performance the coated surface must not exceed the following parameters: Sampling Length (l): 0.03 in Average Roughness (R A ): 50 min Maximum Roughness (R Z ): 500 min Failure to meet above criteria on 95% of samples will result in the rejection of the coated product. Exceptions will be made however for excessively rough raw materials, at the discretion of Novum or it designated representative. Replacement or repair of rejected coated product will be at the Applicator s expense. Inspection and Acceptance Criteria Novum has researched and selected the above paint system to meet the requirements of our structures within its environment for performance. The system will be applied and shall be inspected per the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) Painting Manual. Liquid paint cannot be expected to correct inherent metal surface flaws, but color and gloss expectations will be addressed. Acceptance of a coating is to be per the above criteria, any changes made to the liquid paint system for any other reason will void the warranty provided by Novum. Packaging and Shipment Parts that have been finished are to be packaged in a manner to minimize damage to the finished surface, any part of the finish that is rejected by Novum for aesthetics will be repaired at Applicator s expense. At times, a packing order will be supplied to the Applicator, it is critical that items are pack according to this list. Any damage or delay caused by improper packing per the packing list will be charged to the Applicator. Field Repair Procedure Per Novum Specification NS NS DAG
