Course Description Participants will explore the characteristics and options that clay brick has to offer. They will gain insight on the many ways in which brick aesthetically pleases the masses. They will also acquire the ability to design shapes, specify finishes and exposed face shells, how to use shapes to control water shedding and penetration, and how to interact with manufacturing to make the finished good.
Learning Objectives At the end of this course participants will be able to: 1. Describe the properties and shapes of brick. 2. Differentiate between corbelling, quoins, and reveals. 3. Identify the types of brick patterns, their uses and limitations along with the special effects potentials. 4. Understand how the process of how to submit shape drawings and manufacturing limitations.
Overview Properties (Colors, Textures and sizes) Shapes Arches Corbelling Quoins and Reveals Banding Brick Patterns Blending Design Appearance Brick Sculpture Matching Sales and Manufacturing ASTM Standards
Brick Aesthetic Attributes Durable Architecturally Flexible Expressive Artistic Attractive Secure Historical Modern Maintenance Free
Clay Brick Properties Textures Colors Firing Effects Range Size
Clay Brick Textures Grain (Wire cut, Velour) Vertical Scratch (Matt, Rug) Tree Bark Reverse Tree Bark (Brocade) Rough Vertical Scratch (Rug) Smooth Semi-Smooth Antique Rockface Tumbled Batted Edge Green Tumbled Dimpled Sanded Slurried Manganese Spec Through Body Manganese Spec
Textures can have a significant impact on the appearance of a color and also affect the over all feel of a building envelope. Clay Brick Textures
Clay Brick Colors Colors can play a significant role in the look and feel of a design. From subtle variation to stark contrasts can be achieved through colors. Also, the ability to break up large expanses of wall sections can help alleviate structural design limitations.
Firing Effects Flashing and other firing techniques can affect the way a building looks. Flashing is achieved by dumping excess fuel into the firing zone with limited oxygen. Flat setting is another way to affect the airflow and flash pattern of a brick color. Flat setting does add a cost to the brick as they must be hand set rather than machine set.
Color Range Color range is another way to impact the look and feel of a building. Range is the variation of color within a production run. Sometimes a monochromatic look is desired and certain colors will not be a match. Always discuss with the manufacturer the overall design intent when it comes to range. Modern day blending is used to get a consistent range throughout an entire production run.
Brick Size Size is another way to impact the scale and feel of a project. Large size brick such as an 8x4x16 will give a large project more of a scaled look compared to a modular brick. Size also can help in cost savings and production by getting the brick into the wall faster.
Brick Dimensions W x H x L Width x Height x Length 8 x 4 x 16 Some manufactures vary in their dimension so make sure to check their technical information if you are specifying their product.
Special Brick Shapes Water tables Lipped Brick Corners Radials Sills Dog Legs Treads
Special Brick Shapes Any brick shape will be produced in standard production operation and either extruded or molded. Some plants have dedicated shape production lines. Specification should call for and define special shapes. Working with a manufacturing s production team is critical to make sure the shape is feasible to manufacture. The manufacturing team of most plants have a significant catalogue of shapes and can assist in the design. Most special shapes are limited in size to a maximum of about 8 inches thru the wall, 8 inches tall and 16 inches long (8 x 8 x 16). The majority of clay brick manufacturers in the US can only make a 4 inch through the wall, 4 inch tall and 12 inch long shape (4 x 4 x 12). Select manufacturers can make structural shapes as well.
Lipped Brick
Radius Shapes
Radius Shapes
Often different firing exposure than field brick Different stacking requirements Manufacturing Special Shapes
Caps used to mold the brick are traditionally used on the production line. Wires can be added to cut the shapes needed. Sometimes the brick must be hand cut as they are not able to make them on the production line. Manufacturing Special Shapes
Manufacturing Special Shapes Stay with standard shapes Don t use allowances Review & Sign shop drawings to approve shapes Allow enough lead time for production Work with manufacturer for best results
Arch Types Jack Semi-circular Segmental Circular Elliptical Gothic Tudor
Arch Types Jack Arch
Arch Types Jack Arch with Keystone
Arch Types Semi Circular
Arch Types Elliptical
Arch Types Gothic or Tudor Shapes can result in a difference in color as the sometimes don t match the full range and coverage of the production run. This is due to being set differently on the production car and how they are made. Always specify when doing a shape what side will be the finished (exposed) face.
Corbelling Projecting successive courses beyond wall plane Corbelling adds visual design appeal and accentuates the mass of masonry

Corbelling
Corbelling The projection of each course must not exceed smaller of ½ the height or 1/3 depth of the brick unit. The cumulative projection cannot exceed ½ of the wall thickness.
Quoins Quoins give a feeling of permanence, strength and stability. They can be formed by projecting units or using units or materials of contrasting color
Projection < ¾ Recommended to use 100% solid brick to help reduce water penetration but not done very often. Quoins
Reveals (Recessed Courses)
Max. Depth ¾ Mortar Wash Joint or use Sealant Flashing must be considered Possible place for water penetration Reveals
Banding Can be done with different textures, sizes and colors Excellent way to achieve visual interest and break up large areas of wall
Banding- Use of Different Materials Create bond break between materials Locate joint reinforcement in weaker material Apply sealant at interface (optional)
Bond Patterns Pattern or bond formed by visible face of wall Before 15th century - bricks not laid in any definitive pattern Many patterns developed historically to bond the individual wythes of multiple wythe brick walls Today, patterns mimic those older walls One of the oldest and most creative methods of adding interest to brick masonry
1/2 Running Bond
1/3 Running Bond
Common Bond - header course every 6th course
Flemish Bond - header stretcher, header stretcher
Stack Bond Usually requires the use of joint reinforcement May require brick with a higher dimensional accuracy (FBX)
Diaper Course
Wandering Coursing

Brick Blending Many plants have this capability Excellent for matching old projects Unique look May be necessary for certain plants to obtain a color range Usually done with the same size material for packaging purposes Highly recommend consulting plant to make sure the blend percentages can be done When blending different brick colors together, size variation may be more prevalent

Design Appearance Consider using different sizes together Use special shapes Consider bond pattern Consider joint finish Consider color Brick Mortar 17% of the finished wall appearance Consider sand Color Particle size

Brick Matching The questions to ask: What is the proximity of the matching brick to the existing brick? Do you need to match the size in all dimensions? Do you need to match the color? Are you willing to stain the brick? Do you need to match the texture? How many do you need? How soon do you need the brick?
Brick Matching Matching clean brick vs. existing brick Make sure the area being matched is going to be the look of the final wall Sometimes the wall needs to be cleaned before a match can be obtained for the final look.
Sales and Manufacturing Communication of your needs and expectations is vital to achieve the outcome you want More information is always better for sales and manufacturing Don t ever be afraid to ask questions or get clarification Almost all manufacturing plants in the US offer plant tours and allow you to watch your brick being made
ASTM Standards Why do we need standards and what are their role? C67 Sampling and testing methods of clay brick C216 Facing brick C652 Hollow brick C1088 Thin brick C902 Light vehicular paving C1272 Heavy vehicular paving

Brick is durable, flexible, and maintenance free Brick can be made and stacked in numerous ways corbelling, quoins, and reveals Design potential is driven by artistry and imagination Communication is key to success with sales and manufacturing Conclusion

Summit Brick Company is a family owned brick manufacturer that may be considered one of the few remaining David s among the ever growing Goliath s of the brick industry. The company was started at the turn of the twentieth century with the dying dreams of a prospector, who had the brilliance to take that knowledge and apply it to something sustainable. He did that by taking clay and manipulating it in order to create one of the world s best building products brick. Since then, Summit Brick has been passed from one generation to the next all while continuing to grow from a local, to a regional and national supplier. We supply brick, block and other building materials to anyone who has the desire and/or need to use a product that will withstand the test of time on their project.
