4 General Forestry* ATCOFA DEGREE OPTIONS FORM Please check all of our degree options you employ All students enrolled in the undergraduate Forestry program earn the Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree (BSF). The BSF degree program is accredited by the Society of American Foresters. Students can choose from the following forestry major concentrations: Forest Wildlife Management is a unique combination of skills rarely found in other natural resource professionals. Because of the dual emphasis in Wildlife Management and Forestry curriculum, graduates have the academic credentials to eventually become certified a Certified Wildlife Biologist from The Wildlife Society and a Certified Forester from the Society of American Foresters. In addition to the general education and Forestry curriculum, the Wildlife Management curriculum includes courses in forest wildlife management, wildlife techniques, wildlife habitat management, wetland wildlife management, wildlife population ecology, and nongame wildlife ecology, among others. Professional wildlife managers and wildlife biologists must be knowledgeable in a diverse array of subjects, such as plant and animal ecology, physiology, and behavior, fire ecology, hydrology, silviculture, soil science, entomology, and agriculture. Forest Management emphasizes management of forest for wood products, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, and water quality. Students graduate with a clear understanding of how to meet goals defined by landowners and society while maintaining the ecological integrity of forests. Forest management artfully blends several scientific disciplines to achieve these goals. Human Dimensions/Forest Recreation Management Prepares students to manage human involvement and interaction with forests, wildlife habitats, and wildland recreation sites. It also provides students with the unique opportunity to prepare for a career that applies the sciences of the natural resource environment as well as the sciences of sociology, psychology, communications, and conservation education. Fire Management prepares students to apply the science and practice of prescribed burning and wildfire management in forest ecosystems. Students who earn a BSF in Fire Management will have a successful, exciting career in the field of wild and prescribed fire and renewable natural resource management and are eligible for Red Card certification. Urban Forestry prepares students to resolve issues in urban forest environments and equips them with techniques that enable them to establish, maintain, and manage individual trees and forests that are found within those areas. Agroforestry combines Forestry and Agricultural management to create integrated, diverse, productive, and sustainable land-use systems. Graduates with a BSF in Agroforestry are prepared to manage forests and their associated renewable natural resources for multiple uses that include grazing of domestic stock and wildlife, forage production and forest products and for a number of other values people derive from those lands. *Eligible to become a Certified Forester through the Society of American Foresters Page 4 of 5
5 Spatial Science Students who earn a degree in Spatial Science study spatial information describing the Earth, its physical features and the built environment. It incorporates fields such as geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning system (GPS), remote sensing, surveying, and cartography. With the continuing investment in computing facilities at the College, students are exposed to the sophisticated and most current hardware and software. They also have opportunities to interact with the many different fields of Forestry and Environmental Science for real-world projects. Upon graduation, students are equipped with comprehensive skills dealing with spatial data that are found everywhere in today and tomorrow s business sectors. Students have options of Natural Resources Track or Land Surveying Track. Environmental Science Designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and address the complex environmental problems facing modern society. The program is structured to maintain flexibility and allows students to focus on aspects of the field that are of particular interest to them. The degree program maintains two specialized tracks, each of which provides excellent career opportunities for graduates. The Land, Air, and Water Track is a rigorous, science-based curriculum that includes additional coursework options in biology, limnology, microbiology and chemistry, and is an excellent option for students who desire a more focused, science-intensive curriculum. The Discipline Specialization Track allows students to personalize their own curriculum by minoring in a supporting area, such as biology, chemistry, forestry, geology or geography. Page 5 of 5
