Session 7. Restoring sustainable forest value chains Economic and social dimensions of restoration in the Mediterranean context. James Aronson, Center for Conservation & Sustainable Development, Missouri Botanical Garden V MFW, Agadir - March 22, Session 7.

Goal: Promote innovation & entrepreneurship in Mediterranean Forests and landscapes. But How? Mainstream restoration of natural capital and social capital.

Blignaut J et al 2013 Restoring natural capital: key strategy on path to sustainability. Ecol Engineering 65:54-61.

Five forms of capital (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005): Human capital (intellectual and physical) Social capital (trust, institutions, governance) Natural capital o renewable (all living species, ecosystems), o cultivated (heritage seeds, livestock races, traditional knowledge & know-how) o non-renewable (coal, gold, diamonds), o replenishable (potable water, fertile soils), Financial & Manufactured capital).

Natural Capital (a stock). (In our context = natural & semi-cultural ecosystems (& biodiversity) and cultivated natural capital. Ecosystem goods and services (EGS) represent the dividends (= fluxs) that flow from Natural Capital (= savings, inheritance, heritage, patrimony,

Management & restoration for sustained use Renewable Natural Capital Institutions & human Judgments determining (the use of) services Feedback between value perception and use of ecosystem services Biophysical Structure & processes (e.g. vegetation cover or Net Primary Productivity Functions (e.g. slow water passage, biomass) Services (Flood control, Crop pollination, etc. Benefits (contribution to health, safety, etc) Human Society - Total economic Value De Groot, Blignaut, Aronson, et al In: The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity: Ecological and Economic Foundations. Pp

Targets 5, 14 and 15 and FLR in the Mediterranean What do relevant indicators of progress for these targets show in the region? How have Mediterranean countries interpreted these targets and planned for their implementation? How can these efforts align with other initiatives for Mediterranean Forest and Landscape restoration?

Blignaut et al. 2007: Ecol. Restoration 26:

Learn to be bilingual regarding the concept of ecological restoration (and use concept of ecol. rehabilitation). 1. Communication, outreach, consensus-building. 2. Scientific and technical: planning, finance, monitoring and evaluation in i) spatially explicit and ii) culturally specific settings.

Ecol. Rehabilitation focuses on functions & services; productivity. Ecological Restoration also aims to recover full ecosystem content & structure. ***** Both are part of a Family of Restorative Activities to be applied at landscape scale.

Family of restorative landscape level. Increased supply and value of the stock of natural capital.

Natural capital and flow of EGS Historic landscape Degradation & fragmentation Consensus building Family of restorative activities 1. Ecological restoration 2. Rehabilitation 3. Recuperation 4. Remediation Recovering landscape Degraded landscape Business as usual More degraded landscape Time (Aronson et al. in press; Annals Missouri Botanical Garden).

Restoring Natural Capital (RNC) includes: a) restoration of degraded ecosystems, b) ecological & economic rehabilitation of production systems farms, tree farms, etc.) c) ecological improvements in extraction, urbanization, transport, etc.) & d) incorporation of awareness of the value of natural capital into daily activities, schools, etc.

Working for Wetlands, South Africa

The Natural Resource Management Programmes are part of the South African Government s Expanded Public Works Programme, which addresses developmental needs in labour-intensive ways.

The Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact aims to restore 15 million hectares (30%) of this endangered hotspot biome by 2050; Quality forest restoration to protect biodiversity and provide ecosystem services (e.g. Carbon, water) and human welfare (jobs, livelihoods, income opportunities); Almost 200 institutions have already formally joined the Pact, incl. federal and State gov ts., environmental NGOs, top enterprises

PACTO - Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact (AFRP) ( = en) GOAL: the restoration of 15 million hectares of Atlantic Forest by BENEFITS? Connecting forest remnants Facilitating genetic exchange. Sequestering greenhouse gases Keeping water clean Restoring and protecting forests Protecting the seed bank Providing jobs, big-time. COSTS? 5,000 USD per hectare.

N of jobs anticipated: Number of Jobs Source: AFRP, unpublished.

Mention Scottish Borderlands work with wood turning studiosproducing valueadded products from forests undergoing restoration
