6 INTRODUCTION Foreword This Program Outline is issued by the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour for classes to which apprentices are directed during their periods of apprenticeship training in accordance with Regulations made under the Apprenticeship Act. It is intended as a guide for instructors of apprenticeship classes. Practical instruction by demonstration and student participation should be integrated with classroom sessions. Safe working practices, even though not specified in each operation or topic are an implied part of the program and should be stressed. The Program Outline was prepared with the advice and assistance of the Director of Apprenticeship s Trade Advisory Committee, comprising representatives of labour and management and in cooperation with representatives of Colleges and Institutes. Describe saw filing Maintain cutting edges Align and set-up equipment saws and knives are used on Maintain the saw plate of circular saws (called anvil work) and of band saws (called bench work) Grind chipper knives, profile knives and hog knives Carry out babbitt, shimming and balancing procedures 2.
