8 Data from the University of Maryland and Google The world lost 2.3 million square kilometers of tree cover between 2000 and 2012 the equivalent of losing 50 soccer fields worth of forests every minute of every day for the past 13 years! By contrast, only 0.8 million square kilometers have regrown, been planted, or restored during the same period

9 Suggested frameworks: Output oriented activities Example: Global Forest Watch The world s forests are under threat; 50 soccer fields of forests are lost every minute. We need to take action, but there s still a lot we don t know. When and where are forests cleared? Why does it happen? Who is responsible? On February 20, 2014, prominent speakers and panelists convened for the launch of GLOBAL FOREST WATCH (GFW), an online transparent mapping application that provides near-real time, reliable, and actionable data about what is happening in forests worldwide. The GFW platform is intended for use by stakeholders in the world s forests concerned citizens, government leaders, buyers and suppliers of sustainable forest products

11 Dynamic New Platform to Protect Forests Worldwide More than 40 partners launch near-real time forest monitoring system the World Resources Institute (WRI), Google, and a group of more than 40 partners launched Global Forest Watch (GFW), a dynamic online forest monitoring and alert system that empowers people everywhere to better manage forests. For the first time, Global Forest Watch unites the latest satellite technology, open data, and crowdsourcing to guarantee access to timely and reliable information about forests. Businesses, governments and communities desperately want better information about forests. Now, they have it, said Dr. Andrew Steer, President and CEO, WRI. Global Forest Watch is a near-real time monitoring platform that will fundamentally change the way people and businesses manage forests. From now on, the bad guys cannot hide and the good guys will be recognized for their stewardship.

15 New features of Global Forest Watch High-resolution: Annual tree cover loss and gain data for the entire globe at a resolution of 30 meters, available for analysis and download. Near-real time: Monthly tree cover loss data for the humid tropics at a resolution of 500 meters. Speed: Cloud computing, provided by Google, multiplying the speed at which data can be analyzed. The crowd: GFW unites high resolution information from satellites with the power of crowdsourcing. Free and easy to use: GFW is free to all and no technical expertise is needed. Alerts: When forest loss alerts are detected, a network of partners and citizens around the world can mobilize to take action. Analytical Tools: Layers showing boundaries of protected areas worldwide; logging, mining, palm oil and other concessions; daily forest fire alerts from NASA; agricultural commodities; and intact forest landscapes and biodiversity hotspots.

Are we suggested to assess the areas of biodiversity, ecosystem services, integrated ecosystem services with biodiversity, indigenous/traditional knowledge, or any other objects (areas)? Are we clear about the objects (areas) for our assessment? 2. What are the outputs or outcomes of our assessment? Are we clear about the outputs or outcomes of our assessment and the contribution of them to the utilization, conservation, restoration, and preservation of biological diversity in such as diverse arrays in species, genes, and ecosystems? 3. What aspects of biological diversity and ecosystem services are we supposed to assess? Are we supposed to assess the drivers, pressures, impacts, and responses as well as the states of biological diversity and ecosystem services? 4. What are the frameworks for the assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES)? How do we integrate socio-economic aspects of BES with natural aspects of BES? Do we have clear frameworks to work with these aspects covering all the stakeholders? 5. What are the methods to be applied to the assessment of BES? Are some approaches established in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) useful in application to be used in the assessment of BES for screening, scoping, strategic assessment, alternative and mitigation measures, monitoring, public participation, etc.? 6. What are the criteria (or indicators) and indices to be used for the assessment? Are we suggested to develop the criteria (or indicators) and indices to be used for the assessment in BES? 7. What are the needs, purposes, objects, and applicability of the assessment? Are we clear about the context of the assessment of BES?
