FOREST POLICY Forest Policy Statement Name: Malawi National Forest Policy Date of endorsement: January 1996 by (governmental body -): Cabinet P1 Additional information (if any) P1.Inf Supplement to the national forest policy on Community Based Forest Management was approved by Cabinet in 2003 Forest Policy Documentation electronic copy or web link Paper document P1.Doc Main objectives of the Forest Policy P2 - The goal of the policy is to sustain the contribution of the national forest resources to the upliftment of the quality of life in the country by conserving the resources for the benefit of the nation. The general objective is- to satisfy the people s many diverse and changing needs particularly those of the rural people who are the most disadvantaged. The general objective aim at: 1
2 - allowing all citizens to have regulated and monitored access to some forest products - contributing towards improving the quality of life in the rural communities and providing a stable local economy, in order to reduce the degenerative impact on the environment that often accompanies poverty - establishing appropriate incentives that will promote community based conservation and sustainable utilisation of the forest resources as a means of alleviating poverty. - Fostering the growing of trees by all sections of the communities in order to achieve self sufficiency of wood and forest derived products - Providing an enabling framework for promoting the participation of local communities and the private sector in forest conservation and management - Empowering rural communities to manage the forest resources, fostering ownership or usufruct of trees and ensuring that such trees are sustainably utilised for the benefit of both present and future generations Main guiding principles or instruments for policy implementation - Sustainability of forests P3 - Social Inclusion - Quality - Partnerships - Integration Additional information (if any) P3.
