3 Socioeconomic and legal frameworks The European forest-based sector: With forests occupying 5 % of the global forest area but accounting for as much as % of world production of forest-based products. With forests occupying about one-third of Europe s surface area with large variations between countries from 71 % in Finland to 1 % in Cyprus. With forestland continuously growing by some 0.5 million hectares per year. Counting 16 million private forest owners (owning more than 60 % of the forestland). Accounting for 8 % of manufacturing added value ( BEUR) in the EU Providing between three and four million jobs in industry. Comprising world-leading companies.

4 Socioeconomic and legal frameworks The forest sector in Portugal and in Galicia: With forests occupying over 38 % of the total area. In Portugal (and in Galicia), providing the third largest contribution to the GNP in the EU, after Finland and Sweden. With potential for forestland growth. With private forest owners owning more than 70 % of the forestland). Facing the threat of forest fires. Accounting for 12 % of manufacturing added value in Portugal. Accounting for about 3.4 % of employment
