2 About ERA Training in European Law The Academy of European Law (ERA) was established in 1992 on the initiative of the European Parliament to provide training in European law to legal practitioners. ERA is a non-profit public foundation, whose patrons include most EU member states, and which is supported financially by the European Union. ERA organises conferences, seminars and language courses at different levels at its centre in Trier, its office in Brussels and around Europe. It also provides e-learning courses and publishes a quarterly journal, ERA Forum. ERA works with all practitioners of law, whether they be judges, prosecutors, lawyers in private practice, notaries, in-house counsel, law enforcement officers or lawyers in public administration. ERA s scholarships programme aims to enable practitioners of law from the new and future EU member states of Central and Eastern Europe who would not otherwise be able to cover the costs to attend ERA events in Trier. 3 ERA Programme Complete your legal expertise Basic training courses serve as an introduction in general or to a specific area of European law for those with little or no previous knowledge Deepening seminars focus on a specific development or area of law that enable experts and practitioners to explore a theme in more detail Annual conferences and forums review and debate the latest developments in a particular area of law, anticipate problems and propose solutions Summer courses serve as an introduction either to European law in general or to a specific area of law Legal English courses help lawyers expand their knowledge of English legal terminology and to communicate more effectively in written and spoken English Briefings in Brussels analyse a very recent development in European law, such as rulings by the European Court of Justice Training on request: ERA also organises programmes for particular customers, such as professional associations, public bodies, law firms or companies. They are targeted at a specific audience and can either be prêt-à-porter or made-tomeasure in line with the customer s particular needs and wishes. ERA can offer training at its centre in Trier, at its office in Brussels or in other venues in-house. CPD Continuing Professional Development (CPD or CLE) obligations for lawyers in private practice are being introduced in more and more jurisdictions. The Academy of European Law s conferences and seminars meet the standard requirements for CPD recognition. ERA is accredited as a CPD course provider by bar associations and law societies including the Solicitors Regulation Authority of England and Wales and the Luxembourg Bar, and its individual programmes are accredited by the Conseil National des Barreaux in France and the Consiglio Nazionale Forense in Italy. E-learning ERA offers a range of e-learning courses designed to serve as preparation for participation in face-to-face training seminars. The courses are composed of several online modules and an interactive selfassessment test. The objective is to offer participants the opportunity to freshen up their knowledge in advance or to give them a first basic notion of the subject so that they can draw maximum benefit from their participation.
