3 Standard HS-ESS3-1: Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity. Ozone molecules (O3) naturally exist in small quanhhes in the stratosphere FLT I will be able to model and analyze changes in the ozone layer by completing Ozone Layer Graph The ozone layer helps protect us by absorbing UV radiahon from the sun Another chemical, methyl bromide, has been idenhfied as an ozone-deplehng chemical Certain chemicals, such as CFCs, contribute to the deplehon of ozone Methyl bromide is a toxic peshcide that is used to kill insects, weeds, etc. 3

4 ScienHsts use ozone deplehon potenhal (ODP) to compare a substance s ability to destroy ozone with that of CFC-11 In today s achvity, you will graph data to analyze the consumphon of methyl bromide and concentrahons of stratospheric ozone over AntarcHca 1. Dobson units (DU) measure the thickness of the ozone layer. 7 Recall: The Greenhouse Effect Recall: The Greenhouse Effect Earth s atmosphere contains gases such as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) that help act like the roof of a greenhouse Recall: The Greenhouse Effect During the day, the Sun shines through the atmosphere Recall: The Greenhouse Effect Earth s surface warms up in the sunlight At night, Earth s surface cools, releasing heat back into the air Recall: The Greenhouse Effect Some of the released heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which helps keep our Earth warm Recall: The Greenhouse Effect Greenhouse gases = gases that absorb and reradiate IR from the sun Include water vapor, CO 2, CH 4 and nitrous oxide 7

8 Measuring CO 2 in the Atmosphere Measuring CO 2 in the Atmosphere When CO 2 is released into the air, much of it dissolves into the ocean or is used by plants for photosynthesis Measuring CO 2 in the Atmosphere Because many plants lose their leaves or die back in the winter, they absorb less CO 2 à there is more CO 2 in the atmosphere during the winter Rising CO 2 Levels Rising CO 2 Levels Due to the increase in burning fossil fuels, CO 2 levels in the atmosphere have increased. Rising CO 2 Levels CO 2 levels in the atmosphere today are higher than they have been for the last 420,000 years, and probably for the last 20 million years 8

9 Greenhouse Gases and Earth s Temperature Greenhouse Gases & Earth s Temperature Due to the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, too much IR is being rereadiated to Earth s surface à this leads to an increase in global temperatures Greenhouse Gases & Earth s Temperature This increase is from activities such as power plants, cars, and clearing forests Global Climate Change Global Climate Change Global warming = gradual increase in average temperature at Earth s surface Global Climate Change This increase correlates to the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere 9

10 Global Climate Change This is often referred to as global climate change due to the associated changes in precipitation, frequency of fires, and extreme weather events. Modeling Climate Change Scientists use computer models to make predictions about future changes in climate The models must constantly be updated with new information Modeling Climate Change Modeling Climate Change The models predict that increasing temperatures are driven by human activity in addition to natural variability 1. Rising Sea Levels: -As water warms, it expands - Ice is melting, which adds to sea levels -Lands are slowly being flooded over 10

11 2. Global weather patterns: -Threats include changes in precipitation patterns, more severe storms, and flooding 3. Human Health Problems: -Threats include increased heat-related deaths, longer allergy season, and increased mosquito-related diseases (ex/ malaria) 4. Agriculture: -Changes in climate and increased droughts threaten agriculture 5. Effects on Plants and Animals: -Many plant species would lose their home range due to climate requirements(ex/ plants in need of cooler temps) 5. Effects on Plants and Animals: -Impact on food chains (ex/ a reduction in zooplankton due to warmer surface waters à many animals feed on zooplankton) Reducing the Risk 11
