Geothermalal prospects in the Kenya Rift 14 high temperature prospects identified in the rift Geothermal potential is more than 7,000 MWe Olkaria geothermal field is developed; the others are at various stages
Olkaria Geothermal Field: sectors
Olkaria I Power Station 45MW (Commissioned ) Construction of the 3x15 MW power plant was funded by WorldBank, IBRD, EIB, CDC and Government of Kenya
Olkaria 1, Unit IV (140MW) More than 50 MWe so far on wellhead Production drilling continues using 2 rigs Feasibility study for additional 140 MW plant has been done and is now at EPC tender stage. To be commissioned in 2012/3
Olkaria II Power Station 105MW (Commissioned in 2003 & 2010) Construction of the power plant was funded by World Bank, EIB, KfW and KenGen. 2x35MW commissioned in 2003 and 1x35 MW commissioned in May 2010
Olkaria III (55MW( 55MW) ) Power Plant Orpower4 Inc. 13MW Pilot plant Commissioned MW commissioned in 2009 Additional 36 MW expected in 2013
Oserian Power Plants (2X2MW) The two power plants uses steam from two geothermal wells leased from KenGen units commissioned 2004 and 2006.
Oserian Green house heating i) Cut Roses Green house Heating ~100 ha, (ii)fumigation of soils and sterilization of liquid recycled plant fertilizers
Olkaria IV (Olkaria Domes) Appraisal drilling commenced in 2007 Production drilling is ongoing using two rigs. So far 138 MW on the wellhead Targeted for 140 MW power station by 2012 Development is at EPC tender stage.
Eburru Geothermal field Explored between appraisal wells drilled Estimated resource 40-60MWe 2.5 MWe binary pilot plant to be installed by KenGen in 2011 Northoings (km) EW-05 EW-04 EW-01 EW Easting (km) EW-03 Cedar Hill Eburru Peak EW-02 MT sounding Geothermal well Lion Hill Legend Crater Eburru Farm Road - m Volcanic centre Fault
Menengai Prospect Geothermometry indicate temp (>300 o C) Estimated power potential is over 1,200 MWe GDC to commence exploration drilling in November 2010 Currently, infrastructural works ongoing

Summary of progress Description Development and utilization of geothermal energy Policies Regional cooperation Establishment of Training Institute Government support Progress 1. Total of 30 wells drilled. 5 wells yet to be tested and 25 wells tested have steam availability of 163 MWe at Olkaria I and IV 2. GDC has completed surface exploration at Silali and Homa Hills 3. Infrastructure works in Menengai in preparation for drilling 4. KenGen has commissioned 35 MWe Olkaria II Unit III MWe projects in Olkaria at tender stage 6. AGIL (IPP) completed studies on Longonot in Plans exploratory drilling in Production drilling to commence in 2011 at Olkaria III for additional 36MW to be commissioned Govt in the process of developing policies to promote PPPs in geothermal GDC will undertake geo-scientific exploration projects in Tanzania and Malawi for private developers. GDC is setting up a Geothermal training centre in Kenya that will also be available for use by the other countries in the region. The GoK fully funding GDC to explore and develop geothermal in Kenya. Other funding support is from JBIC, EIB, JICA, KFW, World Bank, AfD, China EximBank, USTDA.
Challenges Challenges Mitigation Measures Insufficient funding 1. Budgetary support from the exchequer and also from Donors 2. Promotion of Public Private Partnerships 3. Exploring financing through CDM Human and equipment capacity building 1. Plans have been developed to bring experts to train people locally and send a few abroad. 2. Development of local training center at advanced stage 3. AfD and USTDA have committed to support capacity building and equipment purchase for GDC.
