From estuarine eutrophication to ecosystem-based fisheries management: a tale of dataprying and fish-finding Kate Boicourt

During the process I found? Perdido Bay
Health ratings in the mainstem? To characterize the health of an estuary, the ASSETS rating system is used, by evaluating the following: Primary symptoms: Chla and macroalgae abundance Secondary symptoms: Dissolved oxygen, turbidity, SAV change Ages 1-2 years Age 2 years and above Feeding Young of the year Eggs
Deriving a condition expression ex: Chlorophyll a
Overall health of the Mid- Atlantic The assessed Mid-Atlantic region encompasses 22 coastal estuaries and lagoons More than half of the systems exhibit: - moderate to high levels of at least one of 5 symptoms - impacts on living resources Primary symptoms are high in 18 of 22 estuaries Photo Courtesy of D. Shibberu
Eutrophic trends in the Mid-Atlantic
Considerations for the future Definition of an estuary: should we include coastal embayments? Review of parameters: how can we accurately reflect the eutrophic condition of a dynamic system? Collaborate with other data repositories, such as DEQ s, monitoring networks etc. to streamline information retrieval. Comparison to other assessments, such as the National Coastal Assessment
Fisheries management: the ecosystem-based approach The challenge is to rebuild and sustain populations, species, and biological diversity, so as not to jeopardize a wide range of goods and services from marine ecosystems, while providing food, revenue, and recreation for humans - National Academy of Sciences
The evolution of fisheries management
Broader horizons for better management? An expansion in scope: ecosystem-based management has the potential to look at habitat and complex trophic interactions, more fully reflecting the system. The ability to manage fisheries in multiple ways rather than just mandating fixed quotas - Marine Protected Areas - size & age limits - seasonal closings according to habitat/ life history/reproduction E.B.F. management reduces uncertainty by accounting for more factors, but introduces more sources of uncertainty. pg&imgrefurl= %3D21%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN
The ecosystem-based strategy The intricacies of tying a long-line. Regulation of catch methods is a necessary step towards a sustainable fishery. Establish monitoring programs to evaluate progress Committee discussion Define sustainable levels The use of caution when placing restrictions on less-studied areas Reduce bycatch Support with current Research Decide practices to be Enforced
Support for the ecosystem-based approach North Pacific: not a single groundfish stock overfished. United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982 Precautionary Principle 1995 Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries National Environmental Protection Act Overall sp. harvest cap is below cumulative biological catch limits for each sp. Taken from: The Marine Conservation Alliance,
Progress in the Chesapeake NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office and the Fisheries Ecosystem Plan Technical Advisory Panel: collaboration to produce an ecosystem-based plan. Supporting data is currently being compiled, for calibration of EcoSim with EwE Newsletter Publication: Why?
