Presenter Tom Ferencevic VP Technology & Innovation, Yield Energy

Dr. Digester Biogas Services Tom Ferencevic VP, Technology & Innovation Yield Energy Inc.

OBJECTIVE Show how feedstock demand dynamics y are increasing the need for innovation on the supply side of the equation

Who we Are Yield Energy is biogas company focusing on system design, contaminant removal technology, operations and support services In Canada partnered with the Miller Group for municipal projects Finsterwalder Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG (FITEC) is an engineering company specializing in the design of biogas plants for contaminated urban organic waste FITEC is focused on the design and integration of pre treatment and digester cleaning systems to remove contaminants FITEC developed a specialized AD software program (BIO TIP) to simulate all of the biochemical i degradation d processes that t occur simultaneously in digesters

Recycled newsprint bio solids After centrifuge Dr. Digester Services Bicarbonate Testing Feedstock Strategy & Verification Bicarbonate Testing Monitoring, Tracking & On going Support Feedstock & In situ Digestate Analysis Supplement Formulation & Manufacture Biogas Plant Mass Balance Calculation BioTip: Biological Process Simulation

Analysis/Characteristics 12m/ ave. TS % OM% VS% TKN NH3 Total ph Total Total Total Ca 4 P K Mg < ,083 Sampling of 34 individual analysis including all metals Bulk Density about 800 kg/m3 Characterized by a very high mineral (ash) content Theoretically lignin and large portion of indigestible or very slowly degradable fraction should already be removed with the balance being essentially pre treated and easier for bacteria to digest

Economics Facility produces 200 tonnes per day Majority of the product is land filled on site for really really cheap! Some agricultural land application being done Landfill has an expiry date...long term opportunity looks good for AD. Logistics costs are high Challengeon the regulatory side...turns out the streamlined process is not so streamlined and facility needs additional MOE approvals

BMP TESTING Digestate is added to the sample. p

Negative/Positive controls and samples are tested in unison.

BMP Testing/Results Integrated Explorations poato Inc. Guelph, ON Incubation temp. 35 C Total incubation time: 23 days Average Methane Concentration: 69.2% Methane Yield: 0.18 L/g VS Translates to 50.5 m3 methane/tonne or about 74 m3/tonne biogas. I think there will be a bit more gas yield under operating plant conditions

30g of sample added to 300mL of digestate; 1 Incubate at 35 C 2 Incubate at room temperature

Ob ti ft 1 d f Observations after 1 day of sample sitting in digestate incubated at 35 C.

Observations after 10 days of sample sitting in digestate incubated at 35 C. Sample appears broken down, particle size is smaller, sample appears less clumpy and more dispersed than sample added to water.

Issues & Future Work Commercial trials are delayed likely until spring due to aforementioned regulatory issues Logistics costs are always an issue Tipping fee revenue opportunity low due to lengthy trucking distances Upsides: 1) when mixed with food waste the fiber content will make it easier/cheaper to dewater and recover fiber fraction for value add 2) Long term supply opportunity Need to evaluate the potential for enzymes to increase gas yields

THANK YOU Tom Ferencevic VP, Technology & Innovation Yield Energy Inc tom.ferencevic@yieldenergy.com com

Q&A Ask questions using the Questions Panel on the right side of your screen. All questions and comments will be recorded and incorporated in the webinar summary report. Also, please a few moments to answer the survey questions. This Webinar Wbi will be available by Monday, June 24
