Celebrating our STARS, Charting our Course February 25, 2014

Thank you to the many who have contributed to the success of this symposium: Office of the President Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost Office of the Vice President of Research Bioeconomy Institute Center for Building Energy Research Climate Science Program College of Agriculture and Life Sciences College of Business College of Design College of Engineering College of Human Sciences College of Liberal Arts and Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine Council on Sustainability Division of Business and Finance Environmental Health and Safety Facilities Planning and Management Government of the Student Body Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication Henry A. Wallace Endowed Chair for Sustainable Agriculture ISU Athletics ISU Dining University Library University Relations

Our Efforts Win Awards! Did you know? The collective sustainability efforts of Iowa s three Regent Universities received Iowa s highest honor of environmental performance. The 2012 Governor s Iowa Environmental Excellence Award was awarded to Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa for exemplary efforts and accomplishments in sustainability.

Did you know? Purchasing Policies Go Green Purchasing policies encourage energy efficiency, recycled content, reduced packaging, non-disposables, and locally grown and produced food. Reusable to go containers offer students, faculty, and staff a non-disposable option at retail campus dining locations. In the first two years of this program, 3,600 containers have been sold.

Use Task Lighting Did you know? Switch off that overhead room lighting, and opt for a desk lamp or lower-wattage lamp!

Green Curriculum Did you know? Students can choose from nearly 900 courses that integrate sustainability into them. ISU also offers a Sustainability Living and Learning Community and an interdisciplinary sustainability minor.

Switch Off Properly Did you know? Televisions, DVD players, and other electronic equipment can use nearly as much energy when left on standby as when they're in use. To avoid wasting energy, unplug equipment when you're not using it. To make things as easy as possible, plug multiple devices into a power strip, which you can switch on and off at once.

Did you know? Students Are Green Leaders! Students serve in leadership roles on university Green Teams, the ISU Council on Sustainability, and the Live Green! Revolving Loan Fund Advisory Committee. In addition, students have led campus and community sustainable events and have helped plan the university s annual Symposium on Sustainability.

Did you know? Following the Leed ISU s State Gym is one of two LEED Platinum higher education recreational centers in the United States. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects can achieve silver, gold, or platinum certification. New construction and major renovation projects on campus are designed and constructed based on LEED gold standards. Iowa State has one LEED Silver building and five LEED Gold buildings, and two LEED Platinum buildings.

Wind Energy Did you know? In a joint contract with the city of Ames, Iowa State University is projected to receive up to 10% of its electrical energy from wind power annually and eliminate 9,000 tons of coal burn. This equates to 20,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, the amount needed to power the Iowa State Capitol for over 6.5 years.

Office Parties Gone Green Did you know? We all love parties at work! Make your work parties, for whatever occasion (birthday, retirement, weddings, babies, etc.), green by buying environmentally friendly food, plates, utensils, and gifts. Recycle the products after the fun ends!

How well do you know ISU Dining? Trayless dining in the dining centers results in less food waste and less use of water and cleaning products ISU Dining partners with BioBus student group to recycle our oil so that it can be used to help power a CyRide bus ISU Dining recycles cardboard, metal, paper, plastic, glass, pallets, uniforms and other items ISU Dining to-go program in residential dining offers students the chance to have meals to go in a re-usable container. ISU Dining partners with Food at First, a local program to donate products that are left over at the end of the day to feed those in need in Ames Farm to ISU: our Farm to ISU program tracks our purchases of local foods and products Minimizes energy needs by utilizing energy star appliances

Did you know? A Clean Keyboard & A Clean Earth No one likes a gross keyboard, but when cleaning your keyboard, do so in a sustainable manner! Forget traditional keyboard cleaners, which are full of toxic chemicals and greenhouse gases. Instead, turn your keyboard upside over a trash can, then run a strip of double-sided tape between the keys. Or, buy a refillable duster that can be refreshed with a bicycle pump.

Smart Sticky Notes Did you know? Look for paper notes made of 100% recycled fiber and at least 30% postconsumer content. Sales of adhesive notes are estimated at about $1 billion per year. A pack of 100 sells for about $1.25, which means that some 80 billion little sticky notes are stuck somewhere each year.

How well do you know your Memorial Union? At the MU Parking ramp lighting converted to LED has resulted in a 61% energy savings increase. 8 out of 12 air handling units have been upgraded to be programmable, offering opportunities for significant energy savings. Great Hall Chandelier lighting converted to LED, has resulted in a wattage savings of 5688 when lights are at 100% illumination operation. Environmentally friendly cleaning products: non-toxic, biodegradable and made from renewable resources are utilized.

How well do you know your Memorial Union? In this facility Memorial Union Recycling The MU recycling program includes cardboard, paper, redeemable beverage containers, and glass from the MU. There are 18 recycling bin location throughout the MU for paper and redeemable beverage containers. An estimated 4.5 tons of cardboard were recycled from the MU during the month of January in Restroom paper products are made of 100% recycled material Lights and thermostats signage are placed throughout the MU to remind visitors to conserve energy by shutting off lights and reducing heating and cooling demand.

The following green practices were incorporated into this Symposium: Participant Materials Program paper certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Reusable name badges Name badge cardstock from recycled paper and printed using soy ink Condensed program handout and complete program online, eliminating additional handouts Virtual Proceedings available on the web post-event

Did you know? Recharge and Remove Waste Consider buying rechargeable batteries, and recycling them when you are done with them. Non-rechargeable batteries are tough to recycle and often end up in landfills. In addition, try not to throw batteries in the garbage; instead, find out where they can be recycled!

The following green practices were incorporated into this Symposium: Dining Using compostable utensils and plates Local foods were sourced in today s offerings, minimizing travel and delivery ISU Dining composting today s meal waste, utensils and plates, reducing waste sent to landfills Paper products and disposables used on the break are from recycled and/or compostable materials

The following local foods were sourced for the symposium: Sustainability Symposium: Apple Crisp with Whipped Topping (Anderson-Erickson Dairy & Picket Fence Creamery) Vanilla Ice Cream (Anderson-Erickson Dairy & Picket Fence Creamery) Mulled Apple Cider (locally grown apples) Sustainapalooza : Fresh Vegetable Basket with Dip (dip made with sour cream from AE Dairy) Sweet Potato Croquettes (locally grown sweet potatoes) BBQ Pork Pizza (sourced from local farm) Hot Mulled Cider (locally grown apples)

Please join us in our sustainability efforts: Place your name badges and programs in the marked baskets at the close of the symposium The badge holders will be reused The cardstock and programs will be recycled Provide your feedback about today s events on the evaluation that will be ed to you after the symposium
