10 LANDER UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES Replaced the old T12 Fluorescent lights with the new Energy Efficient T8 and T5 Fluorescent Lights. Replaced the old Mercury Vapor Bulbs with Compact Fluorescent and LED Bulbs. Replaced all Thermostats that contain Mercury with Digital Thermostats that have programmable set points. LANDER UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES Replaced old outdated HVAC replaced with B.A.C. controls to a Head-end with ability to schedule and use set points. Using Wireless Thermostats in buildings without HVAC controls so we can schedule and use set points on HVAC equipment via the wireless network. Changing the summer schedule to a 4 day work week to save on utilities for all buildings. 10
11 LANDER UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES Recycling all of the cardboard, paper and aluminum that is used on campus. Recycling all of the old HVAC equipment that we replaced, getting copper, aluminum & metal. All cleaning supplies are environmentally friendly (green). SUSTAINABILITY NEW RESIDENCE HALL CONSTRUCTION Davis & Floyd, Inc. is the engineering firm for Lander University s new residence hall which is scheduled to open in August The following concepts & equipment will be utilized in the design in order to provide a high-performance building that minimizes energy consumption. 11
12 PLUMBING The design will incorporate 1.5 GPM shower heads instead of the code maximum flow of 2.5 GPM for a 40% savings over standard design Dual flush toilets Domestic hot water efficiency Water use HVAC Variable Refrigerant Volume Technology LIGHTING High Performance Lighting SUSTAINABILITY NEW RESIDENCE HALL CONSTRUCTION LANDER UNIVERSITY STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES WASTE & RECYCLING Students are Encouraged to: Recycle paper, bottles, cans, cardboard & batteries Reduce paper margins in order to decrease the length of printed documents & double-sided print when possible Reuse paper that has text on only one side Encouraged to keep scrap paper near printers and copiers 12
13 LANDER UNIVERSITY STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES WASTE & RECYCLING Students are Encouraged to: Use reusable bags when shopping or buying lunch, supplies, etc. Have reusable mugs, dishware & silverware for use in the room/kitchen Do not purchase bottled water Use paper that contains at least 30% post-consumer recycled content 50% if possible ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION 13
14 WASTE & RECYCLING Have at least one designated recycling bin & recycle paper, bottles, cans, cardboard & batteries. Reduce paper margins in order to decrease the length of printed documents and/or print doublesided when possible. Reuse paper that has text on only one side. We keep scrap paper piles near our printer and/or copier. WASTE & RECYCLING Use reusable bags when shopping or buying lunch, supplies, etc. Have reusable mugs, dishware & silverware for use in our room/kitchen. Do not purchase bottled water. Use paper that contains at least 30% postconsumer recycled content. 14
15 WASTE & RECYCLING Do not purchase cardboard & plastic boxed meals. Use paper that contains 50% or greater postconsumer recycled content. Conducted a waste audit of our personal trash & recycling to see what items we are throwing away the most, and have taken steps to reduce our waste. ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO: Make a conscious effort to turn off all lights when leaving rooms & while sleeping. This includes common areas such as restrooms, common rooms & kitchens. Make an effort to tightly turn off faucets & showers and to report any leaks to the Office of Housing. Use Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) in desk lamps. Try to minimize water use (shower for 10-min or less, don t leave the sink faucet running, etc.) Take the stairs instead of the elevator if possible. 15
16 ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO: Use power strips & switch them off at night and/or unplug all appliances/chargers when not in use. Have a pitcher of water the refrigerator for shared use. Shut off computers and/or manually send computers into energy-saving mode (standby or hibernate) when not in use. Purchase Energy Star rated appliances (printers, microwaves, etc.) Invest in a Smart Power Strip to help manage vampire energy use. TRANSPORTATION & CLIMATE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO: Walk or bike to locations less then 1.5 miles from the residence hall Carpool with friends to go to the grocery store, dinner, etc Take a carbon footprint quiz ( Use the campus shuttle as a primary means of transportation around campus Sign up for a ride share program Consider green hotel options when traveling 16
