5 Message from the Secretary - Ministry of Defence It is with immense pleasure that I am sending you this message on this day as the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University organizes its 8 th consecutive International Research Conference This year s theme for the IRC is Inculcating Professionalism for National Development, which will be conducted under many scientific sessions i.e. Defence & Strategic Studies, Engineering, Information Technology, Medicine, Basic & Applied Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Law, Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, Built Environment and Spatial Sciences. To inculcate professionalism for National Development is a timely necessity for most of the countries in our region-south Asia, where market places are opening up day-byday making our region a nerve center both economically and politically for other parts of the world. Thus, raising the requirement for every individual to be a professional is imperative so that, their countries would ultimately benefit in the long run in today s highly competitive world, economically or technically. The Kotelawala Defence University stands in the lead among other universities in the country as a producer of professionals for Sri Lanka as well as for some neighboring countries as it trains foreign students who would be future military leaders. It also produces Engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, graduates in IT, Management, Social Sciences, Humanities and postgraduates in many disciplines. I believe this year s IRC will provide a safe heaven for such going-to-be-professionals for their respective fields to broaden their horizons and be a part of the national development drive in the future. Finally, I wish the Kotelawala Defence University, organizers of the event and every participant of the 8 th IRC best of luck and a brighter future in their respective fields of profession. 7 Message from the Vice Chancellor As the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), I am glad to write this message to the Abstracts Book of KDU International Research Conference (IRC), which is held this year on the theme Inculcating Professionalism for National Development. Inculcating professionalism in a country s workforce is essential for its national development, and it can only be achieved through a concerted effort especially by those involved in its educational system. In this respect, KDU has clearly identified its role and is committed to the task of helping the nation to bridge the gap between the need and the availability of a professional workforce to adequately support the national development effort of the country. Accordingly, we have taken many initiatives to enhance the professionalism of our own staff first and then to produce graduates in diverse fields with essential knowledge, attitudes and skills to achieve professionalism in their respective fields. Timely revision of curricula, regular consultations with the industry, close watch on quality assurance, provision of best facilities for research and innovations, introduction of new degree programmes targeting the production of graduates in fields essential for national development are some of the many initiatives taken in this regard. KDU attempts to inculcate in its products some important character traits such as discipline, balanced personality, positive attitudes to learning and work, sound communication and presentation skills, flair for research, and honesty and integrity through diverse programmes such as sports activities and competitions, social functions, club activities, syndicate presentations, research studies, military training for officer cadets and appropriate industrial training for day-scholars and so on. This attempt coupled with the implementation of a well-planned curricula that provide a high quality learning experience of international standard pave the way for our products to easily achieve professionalism when exposed to the world of work. The feedback we receive, for instance, of the professional approach of our first batch of medical graduates serving their internship in various hospitals is extremely encouraging, and we are confidently looking forward to seeing the fruits of what we plant today The large numbers of students reading for diverse degrees in our nine faculties will soon be making their way into the world of work and we are quite confident that they would certainly make their alma mater proud. The KDU International Research Conference 2015, is the eighth consecutive one, and this conference itself is an example of our commitment to enhancing professionalism and contributing to national development. So, let me congratulate all contributors and express my sincere best wishes for a highly successful conference which is a forum from which undergraduates, academics and practitioners alike from all disciplines will reap much benefit. 9 Message from the Conference Chair Welcome to the Annual International Research Conference of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, which is being held for the 8 th consecutive year (KDU IRC-8), under the theme Inculcating Professionalism for National Development. As the chairperson, I take great honour and pride in sending this message to the abstract book of KDU IRC-8. General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University is an institute that immensely promotes and facilitates research activities of its staff and the students. The annual research symposium is one of the ventures in that path. With the expanding educational streams offered at KDU, the KDU IRC-8 was also expanded this year to include research sessions in nine disciplines, namely, Defence and Strategic Studies, Engineering, Medicine, Basic and Applied Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Law, Management, Humanities, Social Sciences, Information Technology, and Built Environment and Spatial Sciences. I was delighted to receive more than five hundred abstracts from researchers, from various institutes throughout the country and from few international institutes. After a rigorous reviewing process we have selected a total of 306 research papers offering 196 oral presentations and 110 poster presentations. We have invited globally eminent scientists/professionals from all the above said disciplines to deliver guest speeches. It will be to my greatest fulfillment of organizing this event that all the participants for KDU IRC-8 use this opportunity to the best, for disseminating their research findings, exchanging contemporary knowledge and building partnerships and collaborations to advance their research, thereby contributing to the national development. Through this annual research conference, we further expect to increase students awareness of the importance of research and training in their respective disciplines, understanding of the quality of research, and improvement in scientific writing skills. It is with my heartiest gratitude I am devoting the last paragraph of my message in thanking the rest of the organizers of KDU IRC-8, without whose proper teamwork, this task would not have been possible. I express my sincere appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, Major General Milinda Peiris for the excellent leadership and support during the organization of the whole event; to Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Admnistration) Major General Ruwan Kulathunga, for his invaluable contribution for the smooth organization and operation of the event; and to Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Tilak Weerasooriya for his guidance and support throughout. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the Rector (Southern Campus, KDU), All the Deans of the faculties, faculty coordinators, presidents and committee members of various organizing committees of the KDU IRC-8, for their valuable advice and support.
