1 a guide to northern ireland Renewable heat incentive (NIRHI) solar thermal solutions
2 what is the northern ireland renewable heat incentive (NIRHI) for non-domestic customers? The NIRHI is a financial incentive scheme run by DETI designed to increase the uptake of renewable heat and reduce the UK s carbon emissions. The scheme provides financial support to businesses in Northern Ireland via a subsidy per kwhth of eligible renewable heat generated from accredited installations. Ofgem are responsible for administering the scheme. DETI are responsible for the policy and tariff rates. 1 Generate your own free energy Why should I install a renewable heating system? 2 Protect your business from future fuel price rises Solar Thermal RHI Eligibility Criteria How to Apply Collector type must be flat plate or evacuated tube Equipment and installer must be MCS approved - MCS certification requirements apply for installations less than or equal to 45kWth Equipment must be new at time of installation Grants must not have been previously used for purchase/installation of the equipment Correct metering is in place meter readings to be submitted To apply for accreditation for an installation, you will need to apply online via the Ofgem NIRHI website and send in a separate hard copy form with your organisation s bank account details. Renewable heat installations commissioned since 1 September 2010 will also be eligible to apply for accreditation under the RHI scheme Who is the scheme for A non-domestic installation is a renewable heat system that supplies large-scale industrial heating right down to small community heating projects. This includes: Small Business 4 Reduce your energy bills Education RHI Tariffs for Solar Thermal Systems 9p per kwh 3 Reduce your carbon footprint Below 200 kwth 20 YEARS Owner decides to apply for accreditation to the Renewable Heat Incentive Submits an application to Ofgem using their online account Ofgem considers the application and accredits the installation (providing all eligibility criteria are met, the identity of the applicant has been verified and the prospective participant s bank details have been validated Participant submits meter readings and other periodic data on an ongoing basis Participant receives quarterly RHI payments Support ends after 20 years Office Process & Manufacturing Leisure Medical Facilities Sports Facilities District Heating Schemes multiple homes served by one boiler Any commercial, industrial and agricultural businesses using a high volume of hot water will benefit financially from installing a solar thermal system and applying for the RHI Solar Thermal Tariff NI Size Range Payments made on a quarterly basis Amounts determined by ACTUAL heat output of the system - measured via heat meters Tariffs adjusted annually in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) Length of Tariff What you ll need to provide You will need to provide evidence in support of your application that shows the installation company details, date of installation and installation serial number. This could be any one (or a combination) of the following: Receipts and / or invoices relating to the installation of the equipment Commissioning certificate Commissioning report Photograph of the installation clearly showing the serial number of the equipment
3 Kingspan Solar Thermal Solutions Why Solar Thermal? THE SUN - AN UNLIMITED ENERGY RESOURCE Every year the sun provides over 8000 times as much energy as we consume worldwide. A well designed solar thermal system can provide up to 70% of a building s needs annually. This is why solar thermal systems are one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly renewable energy solutions available reducing fuel bills and Co 2 emissions. Benefits Solar thermal energy enjoys many economic and environmentally advantages over other forms of energy including: RHI eligible Generate FREE hot water all year round Reduce your energy bills Environmentally friendly Reduces carbon footprint thermomax vacuum tubes Kingspan Thermomax vacuum tubes are specifically designed for operation in northerly climates and can have 30% more energy gain than flat plates. The vacuum inside each tube provides perfect insulation and suppresses heat loss by protecting the system from outside influences, which results in optimum performance levels all year round. FEATURES Up to 30% more energy gain than Flat Plate Panels. Wet & Dry systems available. Plug & Play Design means they are easily fitted and replaced. Recommended for commercial use. Unique temperature limitation safety device. New slim-line manifold. Generates heat energy even on overcast and cloudy days How does solar thermal work? flat plate panels FREE SOLAR ENERGY 1 Solar panel 1. Energy from the sun is collected by a heat retaining fluid in the solar panel 2. Fluid is pumped through a coil inside the cylinder, heating up the water inside... Kingspan Solar Flat Plate Panels are the most popular solar collectors on the market. They provide a cost-effective solution for both domestic and commercial applications and deliver excellent levels of efficiency and performance. A range of fixing brackets is available to suit all types of roof tiles including concrete, slate and clay peg. The panels are robust, hard-wearing and flexible in installation with both in-roof and on-roof options. 4 Hot water 3 Pump station controller Returned fluid then returned to the solar panel to be reheated 4. Hot water can be used for wash rooms, sinks and kitchens areas 5. A traditional boiler or electric immersion heater is used to top up hot water supplies on days when solar energy is low EPDM Glass Aluminium Copper 6. Control unit measures the amount of solar energy collected and allows you to set the times your system is active Aluminium Rockwool Brass FEATURES 2 Hot water cylinder 5 Condensing system boiler In-roof and on-roof options.
