7 7 Source Water Intake s One of the toughest applications in desalination, source water intake requires pumps to be corrosion resistant. 10 10 Multi-Effect Distillation Desalination Multi-Effect Distillation Desalination With the promise of low primary energy consumption, low heat transfer area and high gain ratio, multi-effect distillation (MED) is experiencing renewed interest and growth. Often coupled with a vapor compression cycle, MED boasts higher heat efficiency and more economical operation. MED significantly reduces two of thermal desalination s most perplexing and costly issues: calcium carbonate scaling and corrosion. 11 11 Electrodialysis Normally used to desalinate brackish water, electrodialysis (ED) is a voltage driven membrane process. Its high recovery capability (i.e., more product and less brine) and moderate operating costs make ED an effective desalination process. Critical operations in ED include pretreatment and descaling to protect the membrane stack from damage and clogging. Flowserve offers pumps for all facets of ED processes, including low pressure feed, brine handling, post treatment and product distribution. Electrodialysis and Mechanical Vapor Compression Desalination Vapor Compression Distillation Mechanical vapor compression (VC) is typically used in combination with MSF and MED processes. Known for their simplicity, reliability and relatively low volume, VC units are also commonly found in small- and medium-scale desalting applications like resorts, plant and drilling sites. While smaller and less complex than other thermal desalination processes, pumps for conventional VC units must handle the same difficult and demanding services including intake, pretreatment, feed and brine recirculation.
