2 Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH The institute is a public research body with independent scientific activities, organizational and administrative framework under the supervision of the Ministry of Health The institute is the technical and scientific body of the National Health Service and protect the public health, carrying out research, monitoring, training, control and consulting activities. The Institute provides scientific advice and technical support for the Ministry of Health and local and central administrations. The Institute collaborates with National and European Agencies and international Organizations such as FAO, WHO and EPA
3 Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) SECTION OF INLAND WATER The Section is responsible for: HYGIENE the assessment and management of risk related to the presence of chemical contaminants and emerging compounds in ü water intended for human consumption ü surface water, ü groundwater ü urban and industrial wastewater and their reuse the development and validation of analytical methods for the analysis of chemical compounds in matrices above reported chemical analyses and consultations following requests by Magistrates, anti adulteration Carabinieri and other health Authorities national and international projects and collaboration agreements with other agencies on issues relating to chemical quality of drinking water, wastewater, sediment and sewage sludge, and health implications related to the water disinfection and materials in contact with water.

5 Objectives of the CIS The objectives of the CIS Work Programme for are three. The CIS should contribute to: 1. improving the implementation of the WFD and coordination with implementation of other water-related directives and facilitating the implementation of the first cycle of the FD 2. increasing the integration of water and other environmental and sectoral policy objectives, particularly nature, agriculture, transport, energy, disaster and risk prevention, research and regional development 3. filling in the few remaining gaps in the EU legislative and policy framework on water.
