2 Context Convention on Biological Diversity National strategy for biodiversity (update) Law Grenelle 1 (2009) -> elaboration of regional and local biodiversity strategies including overseas (French OCTs are free to do it) Principle reaffirmed in 2012 in the roadmap of Environmental Annual Conference

3 The Approach Why the involvement of IUCN France? Global issues for biodiversity conservation New opportunities with Mayotte status evolution of Mayotte (French department, European OR) Implementation of the French national strategy for biodiversity and commitments to environmental conference Strengthening the network of local actors in the environment through the expertise of IUCN network, research funding and capacity building

4 The Approach Specifically, what is changing? A new platform to exchange, dialogue and for environmental awareness A common vision develop actions for biodiversity with an appropriate governance, mobilizing funds for the implementation of biodiversity conservation projects Facilitation to raise funds by offering a coherent project built collaboratively How do we want to develop it in Mayotte? Governance: Steering Committee, Technical Committee, Working Group Building strategy from operational activities with voluntary actors

5 Présentation de la démarche The 3 steps for the elaboration of Mayotte biodiversity strategy : Establish a shared diagnosis Defined on the basis of the diagnostic challenges to preserve biodiversity Develop proposals for shared strategical priorities for action in accordance with the commitments of the actors => according to their will, their skills and their powers, for sustainable development of Mayotte.

6 1st step : shared diagnosis of the territory Done with a technical expert group (about 50) Describe : biodiversity, socio-economic activities dependent on biodiversity, actions taken, sectoral policies) => Reflects the challenges for the sustainable development of the territory of Mayotte.
