3 Introduction In July 2012 the European Commission launched a Smart Cities initiative stating its belief that cities across Europe are forerunners in the transition towards a low carbon and resource efficient economy. Pip Frankish Sustainability Manager for 3M in West Europe. At 3M We recognised early on, that doing business in new, smarter ways would not only create a more viable company it could also enable us to meet our social responsibilities and reduce our impact on the environment, two objectives integral to ethical business conduct. Sustainability is a natural extension of our values. Almost 70 of the EU population lives in urban areas and cities are the driving force in generating Europe s economic growth. Smarter cities can improve the quality of life of millions of European people. At 3M, we wanted to understand what people living in cities really know about smart cities, and in particular what city dwellers felt were the most important attributes of smart city living. Working with TNS, 3M commissioned research across 2,500 EU citizens in Germany, UK, France, Italy and Sweden. We hope you find this survey useful, and we welcome your feedback and comments. 2 3

4 Executive Summary Background and Methodology Our survey conducted by TNS, on behalf of 3M, shows the two most popular perceptions of Smart Cities are environmental progress and efficient public transport. The study also shows that EU citizens are concerned about both rising energy costs and potential supply problems. The survey is launched to coincide with the 3M Sustainable Solutions for Smart Cities event held in Brussels on June 26th, The showcase event occurs during the European Union s Sustainable Energy Week, where 3M welcomed guests from industry, government, academia and NGOs to discuss sustainable solutions for smart cities. By gathering experts from various disciplines in workshops to discuss its latest innovations, 3M believes new ideas are generated that help building a better future. Good quality data and insight from EU citizens is critical to a stimulating debate, and understanding what the key issues people living in major cities in the EU are. Click here to register and see an infographic we have created to visualise the report. This first ever survey conducted by 3M on smart cities is designed to increase our knowledge of what EU citizens understanding is about smart city living. This first edition covers five countries. The interviews were conducted by TNS via questionnaires and sent out by . The survey was fielded in May 13th to 23rd, 2013, with 500 completed responses gathered from each country, and from citizens living in pre-defined major cities. Completed questionnaires were gathered from city dwellers in the following cities; Belfast Berlin Birmingham Bristol Cologne Edinburgh Frankfurt Glasgow Gothenburg Hamburg Lille Liverpool London Lyon Malmo Manchester Marseille Milan Munich Naples Palermo Paris Rome Stockholm Toulouse Turin 4 5
