It will be available on open access until the 28 th August at which time the presentations will be moved into the BANZ members area. Become a member of BANZ and join the Biogas Interest Group BANZ has four special topic Interest Groups to help focus the interests and activities of its various Members. The Interest Groups are the powerhouse of the organisation with responsibility for policy and management of activities to the Interest Group topic. The Interests Groups are open to any BANZ member and are structured around a Committee who lead on any aspect of the topic. 5 International Speakers Marie-Hélène Labrie Enerkem Inc. Marie-Hélène joined Enerkem in May She has 21 years of experience in government affairs, communications, marketing and strategic planning. She is Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of Écotech Québec, a cleantech cluster, and she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, the Conseil des entreprises en technologies environnementales du Québec, and the Mississippi Biomass and Renewable Energy Council. She represents the company at the Advanced Ethanol Council in Washington and the Canadian Cleantech Coalition in Ottawa. With its proprietary technology, Enerkem converts non recyclable municipal solid waste into methanol, ethanol and other widely used chemical intermediates. Headquartered in Canada, Enerkem has recently inaugurated Enerkem Alberta Biofuels, its first full-scale commercial waste-to-biofuels facility. jroberge@enerkem.com Linda Eliasson Borås Energi och Miljö AB, Sweden Linda is a business developer in waste strategies, her background is within the field of water and waste water treatment and she has a university diploma in Process Technology in Water and Environment. Over the last few years Linda has been working with planning municipal solid waste management in the City of Borås, Sweden. The work has also included different international projects with focus on education and capacity building for sustainable waste management in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil and USA. linda.eliasson@borasem.se Keynote Speaker Robert Perry Auckland Council Robert is a highly experienced sustainability strategist delivering diverse low carbon city transformation and corporate strategies and programmes addressing emerging sustainability risks through collaborative governance models. As a Principal Strategy Analyst, Robert is leading the Auckland Council s climate change and energy policy portfolios, Robert developed Auckland s strategic planning framework for energy and climate change as a component of the Auckland Plan. Robert has led and managed the development of Low Carbon Auckland - Auckland s Energy Resilience and Low Carbon Action Plan, which was launched in July Robert led and coordinated Auckland s environmental programme for Rugby World Cup He has 18 years management experience gained internationally in local government, consultancy and private sector organisations in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. robert.perry@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz 1

6 Speaker Profiles Brian Cox Bioenergy Association (BANZ) Brian has over 30 years experience in identifying, investigating and developing commercial capital investment projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors. For the last decade Brian has been the Executive Officer of the Bioenergy Association of New Zealand. The Bioenergy Association is an industry grouping representing all commercial, research and academic parties in New Zealand involved with wood fuel, biogas and liquid biofuels. Steve Brewster ADI Systems Convener Biogas Interest Group Steve Brewster has been involved with waste treatment and waste to energy systems (Biogas) for over 25 years, starting as a research assistant. During this time he has assisted in plant design, instrumentation, electrical and control systems, remote monitoring, gas hazardous area assessments, noise control and plant commissioning. Steve comes from an electrical background so has also been responsible for the electrical and control design for most of the waste treatment and waste to energy plants the N.Z. group has undertaken. He has a wide knowledge of biogas related matters. He is also the current Biogas convener for BANZ. steve.d.brewster@adi.ca Caroline Crosby Beca Caroline is a civil engineering associate with Beca who works across in the water and wastewater infrastructure fields for municipal, commercial and industrial clients. She specializes in the planning of infrastructure systems, business case analysis and oversight of complex projects at the feasibility and conceptual design level. Caroline has a strong interest in and experience with resource recovery projects. caroline.crosby@beca.com Rob Fullerton Beca Rob is Beca s Technical Director of Environmental Engineering. He has particular skills in evaluation of wastewater treatment processes and is able to apply his specialist scientific knowledge to develop concept process designs of water and wastewater treatment for a wide variety of municipal and industrial clients, including in the resource recovery sector. He also has extensive experience in the commissioning, operation and trouble shooting of treatment plants. rob.fullerton@beca.com 2

7 Alzbeta Bouskova ADI Systems Dr. Alzbeta Bouskova is a process engineer at ADI Systems with main expertise in anaerobic treatment of waste and wastewater and nutrients removal. Her process skills and experience range from feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed design, pilot plant operation and commissioning. alzbeta.bouskova@adi.ca Jurgen Thiele Spiire New Zealand Jurgen has over 35 years experience in waste to energy projects and the use of anaerobic digestion for value recovery from industrial and municipal waste. He leads the waste value recovery team at Spiire New Zealand. His team is currently involved in capacity upgrades of municipal and industrial digester plants using the innovative digester booster system and design of industrial digester systems for rendering, food processing and distillery industries. Jurgen s specialty area is the effective anaerobic digestion of industrial waste with high fat, protein and salt content. Bob Weston Entec agricultural waste. Bob has worked at Entec for 18 years, during which time he has been involved in numerous energy projects including biogas sourced from municipal solid waste, municipal waste water treatment plants, and bob.weston@entec.co.nz Jonathan Piggot Watercare Services Limited Based at the Mangere Wastewater treatment plant, Jonathan was worked for Watercare for the past ten years. Holding a degree in Environmental Engineering Jonathan completed a graduate program with Watercare in wastewater treatment process engineering. In his current role Jonathan works as the operations coordinator, managing the eight non-metro plants in the southern area of Auckland. JPiggot@water.co.nz Jurgen.thiele@spiire.co.nz Phil Burt Palmerston North City Council Phil Burt (NZCE, TIPENZ) is the Waste Water Asset Engineer for the Palmerston North City Council, Phil has worked for various Councils for more than 31 years and he has been employed at the Palmerston North City Council for 15 years and been responsible for the operation of the WWTP for the past 10 years. phil.burt@pncc.govt.nz Jim Groman Varec Biogas Jim has over 25 years of experience in the design and supply of biogas handling equipment including gas safety, gas conditioning and cleaning, and flaring systems. Jim was previously Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute Sub Committee 2000, and is a member of the Water Environment Federation Residuals and Biosolids sub-committee. Jim is currently VP of Sales and Marketing for Varec Biogas, a leading manufacturer of a complete line of biogas handling equipment. jim.groman@varec-biogas.com 3

8 Mark Milke Civil and Natural Resources Eng., U. Canterbury Mark is a Reader in Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, University of Canterbury, Christchurch. Since 1991 he has taught and conducted research there on solid waste management and other topics. He was an Associate Editor for the international research journal Waste Management from He has a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and is a New Zealand Chartered Professional Engineer. He is currently conducting research on phosphorus recovery from activated sludge, landfill gas emissions, and resilience of infrastructure systems. mark.milke@canterbury.ac.nz Stephan Heubeck NIWA Hamilton Stephan Heubeck is a research engineer with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd. (NIWA) based in Hamilton. He has a farming background and degree from the University of Applied Science Weihenstephan in Germany and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from Massey University / Palmerston North. For the last 8 years Stephan has been involved in numerous NIWA projects monitoring and refining processes in wastewater treatment ponds aimed at maximizing resource recovery from agricultural, industrial and domestic wastes, using small scale and low-tech configurations. In collaboration with industry players, Stephan has been involved in the design and establishment of numerous biogas recovery and use systems, both in New Zealand and Australia, that process a range of wastes and use biogas for a wide range of applications, including heat and electricity provision, transport fuel as well as for reductions in odour impact and Greenhouse Gas emissions. s.heubeck@niwa.co.nz Andrew Carvell Whangarei District Council Andrew is a professional engineer who manages the waste division of the Whangarei District Council. His background is in process and environmental engineering with a particular interest in sustainable use of resources. The Whangarei District Council is looking to pursue projects that can reduce costs and benefit the community and as such is looking closely at biogas reuse opportunities. Yvonne Gilmore Christchurch City Council Energy and energy management is a passion presently applied to the many and varied accounts of the Christchurch City Council.
