S C H O O L O F N AT U R A L S C I E N C E S A N D M AT H E M AT I C S Sustainability B.S. & B.A. Earn a BS or BA in Sustainability, with concentrations in Energy, Conservation and Agroecology, Policy and Economy, or Sustainability Management. Make Your Passion Your Career
Make Your Passion Your Career with a curriculum in Sustainability The degree in Sustainability allows students to develop a broad, interdisciplinary education, while also achieving focused expertise in a career field. With a curriculum that integrates the natural sciences, technology, economics, policy, ethics, and other fields, students are able to pursue either a BS or a BA degree, and undertake focused study on topics such as alternative energy, pollution, conservation, public policy and law, and sustainability management in business and industry. Professors from every School in the University, from Arts and Humanities, to Business, to Public Health, and Social Sciences teach courses in the degree. This is one of only a handful of Sustainability degree programs in the nation, and is in keeping with Stockton s long-standing commitment to environmental education. The Sustainability degree offers exciting opportunities to Stockton students, and complements the University s nationally-recognized programs in Environmental Science and Marine Science. Stockton has long been an environmental innovator, with the nation s largest geothermal system, a pioneering Aquifer Thermal Energy System, Students gain real-world experience working with wind-assessment equipment. and extensive solar energy production on campus. Such resources make the campus a ideal learning environment for such studies. And, with a focus on community engagement and experiential learning, the program expects students to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in communities and businesses across the state as they learn. Students gain field experience.
Water testing in Mullica River Stockton students gain field experience in Arizona. Before designing this new program the University undertook an extensive review of the national and regional job markets and met with employers and educators from across New Jersey. As a result, the curriculum incorporates a broad conceptual education with the hands-on practices and the skills needed in industry and demanded by employers. Indeed, the curriculum is filled with opportunities for hands-on experience, from training on how to conduct a building energy audit, to testing rivers for contamination, to holding a press conference. But the new degree is no academic lightweight; student are required to master topics in the natural sciences, economics, and political science, before they go on to rigorous advanced coursework. The intent is to empower students to understand both the world of the scientist and the world of the policymaker and business leader. So, each of our students is required to complete coursework in technology and design, physics, chemistry, mathematics, policy, economics and other areas before they begin their specialized concentrations. The program answers a growing demand by employers for graduates with specialized training in sustainability. As industry and business develop a greater interest in their green profile, and as alternative energy and conservation Students design a rain garden for enhanced gain prominence, the need for so-called storm water management. sustainability professionals has grown sharply. Stockton s program will help students serve that need. The degree is rigorous, requiring core courses in calculus, physics, chemistry, and ecology as well as focused courses in public policy, economics, management, and ethics; but the payoff is considerable. We re looking for students who are excited about working in this new and innovative field, ready to bring together knowledge from across the academic spectrum, and excited to learn leadership, innovation, and intellectual creativity as they do so. We want students who want to make their passion their career.
Select from four areas of concentration, two in the BA program and two in the BS program. BA Policy This is an excellent concentration for students hoping to work in environmental advocacy, nonprofit, environmental law, community development, sustainable development, government, and related fields. It may be particularly well complemented by a minor in Economics or Political Science. BA Sustainability Management This specialization is particularly well suited for students interested in working in business sustainability, sustainable product marketing, green product development, environmental accounting, and related fields. The concentration can be combined with a minor in Economics or Business. BS Energy The specialization provides students with the technical and scientific training needed to work in energy management, alternative energy applications, and energy systems operations, as well as energy policy and regulation. It may be complemented with a minor in Applied Physics. BS Conservation and Agroecology This concentration provides a strong science-based background for students hoping to work in sustainable agriculture and community food resources, conservation and resource policy, wildlife advocacy and law, and related fields. 6 There is a clear need for a new generation of environmental leaders, advocates and professionals for a planet under stress. Scientific research increasingly tells us that we are compromising the natural systems on which our lives depend. Indeed, there is a growing consensus that the world requires an urgent response from the public and private sectors to avoid the worst potential threats of global ecological degradation. Stockton s degree in sustainability is designed to help create the leaders of the green revolution that is required. In particular, there is a need for trained professionals who can integrate a critical understanding of sociopolitical, legal and economic realities with a rigorous understanding of the natural and physical sciences; they must posses a thorough command of the challenges that threaten our ecological systems, and appreciation for the constraints that can limit our actions, and an understanding of the technology that may help provide solutions. energy assessment Graduate School There is a growing interest in sustainability in higher education, exemplified by an expanding number of interdisciplinary research centers at the nation s leading universities. Columbia University s Earth Institute, the University of California s Energy Institute, and MIT s Environmental Research Council, are just a few of the multiple and diverse examples. These are joined by a rising number of graduate level programs in the sustainability field. Hence, the potential for Stockton graduates to continue graduate studies at some of the nation s leading universities is high. Opportunities for professional graduate studies in design, planning, architecture, law and related areas are also very good. Increasing numbers of professional graduate programs are expanding and enriching their opportunities for advanced sustainabilityrelated training. A major in sustainability could also be a desirable background for law-school-bound undergraduates. Students undertake facilities energy audits for local non-profit organizations. Students gain hands-on experience very early in their studies.
The program supports multiple student-led projects on and off campus. Stockton wind assessment field experience projects A degree in Sustainability is an excellent background for many careers including: Business Sustainability Alternative Energy Environmental Advocacy Environmental Law Corporate Energy Management Sustainability Consultant Nonprofit Management Design and Material Consultant Organic and Sustainable Food Planning and Municipal Administration Educator Government Sustainable Industry and Production Green Construction
