3 SURPASSED In, member greenhouse gas emissions, measured in carbon dioxide equivalents per ton of production, were 16 percent lower than in the baseline year. Improved energy efficiency and the use of less carbon-intensive fuels and carbon-neutral biomass enabled the industry to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, reaching this goal ahead of schedule Exceed 7 percent rate of paper recovery for recycling In 216, the paper recovery rate for paper consumed in the U.S. reached a record 67.2 percent. In 217, members committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their facilities even further aiming for a 2 percent reduction by Member purchased energy use per ton of production was 8.1 percent lower in compared to the baseline year. Member pulp and paper mills produce carbon-neutral biomass energy on site that, on average, provide about two-thirds of their energy needs WOOD FIBER PROCURED FROM CERTIFIED FIBER SOURCING PROGRAMS 26 The member company recordable case incidence rate was 4.8 percent lower than in 26. Although we have met our goal to reduce reportable incidents, we continue to look for new ways to achieve our vision of zero workplace injuries. Member mills have lowered their water use by 6.5 percent since. AF&PA members have taken important steps to improve and preserve water resources. Ongoing technology and innovation enable water to be reused and recycled ten times, on average, WATER USE throughout the pulp and paper mill process Sustainably-managed forests are essential for abundant wildlife populations, clean water, healthy air, and rich soils. We re proud to partner with AF&PA and its member companies as they continue to improve their stewardship of the natural resources we all depend on A 12 percent reduction in members pulp and paper mills water use AF&PA supports and promotes efforts to reduce illegal logging around the world, and members work diligently to guard against procuring fiber from illegallylogged sources In, AF&PA members increased the amount of fiber they procure from certified forestlands to 29 percent, and fiber procured through certified fiber sourcing programs to 98 percent.
