FET SUSTAINABILITY: STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT By: Sean Hayes, PE
About Me: Professional Engineer with Milwaukee County 10+ Years Experience Worked on numerous sustainability related projects Park master planning incorporating green infrastructure Numerous G.I. installations including: wetlands, pervious pavement & rain gardens Native Landscape Design for Storm UW- Milwaukee Continuing Ed. Energy savings and solar projects
Stakeholder Involvement Stakeholder involvement shares project ownership amongst the people impacted by your project. Strong stakeholder involvement can lead to: Added insight with project nuances. Buy-in, support and understanding. Prevent end of project blow ups by someone left out. Stakeholder involvement is key to a project s success. At least the perception of success.
Identify Stakeholders Brainstorm a list of possible stakeholders Think of anyone that may interact with your project. Park redevelopment might include: maintenance crews, park friends groups, tennis groups, cycling groups, farmers markets, etc. Building energy audit may include: maintenance crews, building occupants. For complex projects you may need to reach out to known stakeholders to help with the brainstorm. The maintenance crew may know that a group uses the park for yoga every morning.
Early Planning Invite key representatives of stakeholder groups to early planning meetings. Representatives may include: maintenance supervisors, Parks friends group leader, etc. Inviting too many people can bog down these early planning meetings. Collect stakeholder input to use in your project.
Design Charrette Consider a design charrette including stakeholder representatives. Design charrettes are a design brainstorming exercise. There are no BAD ideas. They can vary in length from a few hours to a few days or more for complex projects.

Websites / News Letters / Etc. Consider ways to keep stakeholders informed. news letters. Keep updated project website. Create handouts and flyers for distribution. Blast updates with #socialmedia The more information you can provide the better.

Implementation Participation Look for opportunities for stakeholders to participate in the implementation of the project. Native planting days. Voluntary energy reductions / recycling participation. Volunteer designed educational signs.

Wrap up. Stakeholder involvement is key to a project s success. Leads to ownership and understanding. Ways to help achieve stakeholder involvement: Identify stakeholders. Invite stakeholder representatives to planning meetings. Invite stakeholders to participate in design charrettes. Stay connected with websites, news letters, social media. Get stakeholders involved in implementation.

3 What is Sustainability? Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
4 Elements of a Sustainability program Use of electricity, natural gas, water Use of other natural resources in the manufacturing of products Building materials Indoor air quality Transportation Local ecosystem
5 Barriers to getting started Getting a commitment for resources All levels of management must buy-in Need to have sustainability staff Develop a budget for capital, expense and R&D Developing a program that will survive and thrive Must be self sustaining and provide value Weeding through the green wash to determine the most meaningful changes
6 Challenges for existing programs Using Capital for non-core business Changes in regulations can change the cost equation Long term contracts Verifying the benefits Customers don t see the value
