USGS Regional Groundwater Availability Studies Regional studies to improve our understanding of groundwater availability in regional aquifers across the Nation. Program designed to provide objective scientific information and develop interdisciplinary understanding necessary to assess and quantify the availability of the Nation's groundwater resources.

Coastal Lowland Aquifer System Study designed to assess groundwater availability for the coastal aquifers from the Texas-Mexico border to Florida. Assessment will be centered on a regional-scale model to quantify groundwater availability and temporal and spatial trends of availability.
Problems Heavy withdrawals from the aquifer system have resulted in; Water-level decline and loss of storage Saltwater Encroachment Subsidence due to GW pumping Increase potential contaminant transport
CLAS Project Goals Analysis of the water budget of major aquifer system components Determine current levels and historic trends in groundwater use, Construct groundwater model to improve understanding of aquifer system
CLAS Project Goals Provide a tool for future projections of groundwater availability Develop regional estimates of primary aquifer properties -- storage, recharge, and discharge Evaluate existing regional groundwater monitoring network
Groundwater Use billion gallons per day withdrawn from the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System Public supplies (43 percent), 1.01 Bgal/d Irrigation (39 percent), 0.93 Bgal/d and Self-supplied industries (18 percent), 0.42 Bgal/d
