2 Monday, 16 January 2017 Decarbonization of the energy system by 2050: The need for Innovation. (Open Meeting) The COP21 agreement has profound implications for energy supply and energy use in the coming decades. Carbon intensity of our global energy system needs to fall by 80-90% between now and 2050, while energy service demand will continue to grow as populations and economic activity continue to expand. Energy efficiency and renewable energy will have a key role to play in meeting the climate objectives. Renewable energy share in the energy mix has to substantially increase in the coming decades. This is a drastic change from today s situation where renewables account for around 18% of the world s final energy use and around 15% of its primary energy use. The German government has requested IRENA to prepare a decarbonisation study within the context of G20 and in cooperation with other parties to explore scenarios for meeting this ambitious objective. Initial findings will be showcased and inputs will be sought to this body of work It is evident that the objective is challenging and there is an urgent need for new technical solutions in certain areas. This poses a challenge but at the same time it creates a huge business opportunity. An energy transition will unfold where the most innovative parties can become world players. The REmap programme with roadmaps for 70 countries accounting for more than 90% of global energy is the basis for this body of analytical work. REmap scope is being expanded from 2030 to 2050 and the energy efficiency component is further strengthened. This work is complemented by econometric analysis of key parameters such as welfare, GDP, trade and jobs impacts. Issues to be discussed: Technical feasibility of a near-zero carbon energy system by 2050 Cost of such energy transition Implications for renewable energy deployment The need for innovation in specific sectors to meet the objective Contact: NWagner@irena.org Renewable Energy Entrepreneurship Support Facility (Closed Meeting) Capital Suite 2 Based on the successful implementation of the pilot programme of the Renewable Energy Entrepreneurship Support Facility in West Africa, and the interest expressed by other African sub-regions to have a similar Facility for their renewable energy enterprise promotion, a meeting will be held which will show-case the progress and impacts of the Facility in West Africa and discuss the best modalities of implementing the programme in other regions of interest to Members. 3 Tuesday, 17 January 2017 Pan-Arab Clean Energy Initiative - Stakeholder Consultation Meeting (Closed Meeting) Organised by IRENA, in collaboration with the League of Arab States, the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, and the World Bank, the stakeholder consultation meeting will serve as a platform gathering national and regional decision-makers involved in electricity generation, transmission, distribution and planning to discuss countries readiness to embrace renewable energy objectives. Drawing on the challenges identified by IRENA s Gap Analysis Study for the implementation of the Pan-Arab Clean Energy initiative and in line with the objectives of the Pan-Arab Electricity Market Integration Agreement, the meeting will seek to identify priority areas for promoting an accelerated integration of renewables into national power systems, potentially forming the basis for future regionally-coordinated programmes and projects in the Arab region. Contact: LYounes@irena.org Letting in the Light: The Promise of Solar (Open Meeting) Renewable energy is now recognised as a key solution in the global response to climate change and for sustainable development generally. Solar energy has become a key energy technology. Continuous innovation and deployment have seen deployment levels grow from 38 GW to more than 230 GW in the last five years, driven by solar PV module price declines of up to 80% between the end of 2009 and In both developed and developing countries, large-scale utility-scale solar PV systems have beaten new gas or coal-fired power stations in terms of costs. Rooftop solar PV systems provide households with cheaper electricity than buying electricity from the grid. Innovative solutions like solar lights and solar home systems are providing cheap electricity to non-electrified regions in Africa and Asia Capital Suite 2 Solar power is poised to revolutionise the world s electricity systems, letting consumers produce power for their own needs and feed surplus energy into the grid. It is of benefit to advanced economies and the developing world, where deployment can accelerate the energy transition, provide modern electricity and improve the lives of billions of people. However, for solar energy to realise its full potential, electricity markets will need updated policies in line with the latest innovations. For solar energy to achieve its potential in transforming the energy system, new challenges need to be addressed in order to ensure that solar PV and CSP deployment continues to accelerate. Part of the solution must also be continued rapid technology progress and innovation, both learning-by-doing for monocrystalline and polycrystalline cell production and performance, as well as new technologies and materials based on fundamental R&D efforts. Systems integration and sector coupling creates new technology challenges such as the need for greater system flexibility, while electricity storage will become important for islands and other small isolated networks and could be important in the longer term for large integrated networks as well. This will be happening against a backdrop where localized electricity production by solar PV systems will likely be cheaper than electricity from centralised power stations further away, pushing today s utility model to its limit.

4 Join IRENA and external experts to hear about: Recent cost trends and future cost reduction potentials from technology innovations, market growth and economies of scale. Look at the competiveness of solar energy in different markets. Best practices in policy support for renewable energy, how these are evolving and what are the lessons that have been learned that can be applied in new markets. How quality infrastructure for solar energy can help reduce uncertainty, improve performance and financial returns. Discussion will also include end of life of PV systems and the new business opportunities that are emerging. Contact: Scaling up variable renewable power: Planning for long-term investment, solving bottlenecks, and implementing grid codes. (Open Meeting) Capital Suite 2 The development and integration of a high share of variable renewable energy (VRE) in electricity grids and markets, namely wind and solar photovoltaic, is still perceived as a challenge. However, a number of leading countries have demonstrated that a rapid scale up in the share of VRE can be achieved successfully, when accompanied by the implementation of appropriate planning, regulatory, technical, and operational measures. IRENA is addressing the various facets of grid integration in its analytic work and has s been working to develop a series of methodological guides to support countries in scaling up variable renewable power. At this meeting, findings from recent studies addressing the integration of a high share of variable renewable energy to the grid, ranging from system operation to long term planning, will be discussed with experts, and best practice from respective countries will be shared. 5 Wednesday, 18 January 2017 Leveraging Local Industries through Renewable Energy Auctions (Open Meeting) This session explores how policy mechanisms like auctions are driving the rapid uptake of renewables in the energy sector. The session will also highlight how rising deployment of renewable energy technologies can leverage local industries and result in significant socioeconomic benefits including creation of local value and jobs. The session is organised in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Renewable Energy Agency, the Renewable Industry Advisory Board (RIAB) of the International Energy Agency and REN21. Contact: Global Geothermal Alliance - Members and Partners Meeting (Closed Meeting) This constitutes the second annual meeting of the Alliance that will bring members and partners of the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) together to take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the GGA initiative and exchange views on the way forward. 6 Additional Meetings 17 January 2017 Coalition for Action Annual Strategy Meeting (Closed Meeting) How will the renewable energy landscape evolve in the next years? What are the overarching drivers and risks that can impact the uptake of renewable energy deployment and the overall energy transition? How does the renewable industry cope with growing uncertainties in different parts of the world? How can the Coalition partners concentrate efforts on compatible strategic goals, and jointly address current and common risks? IRENA HQ, Masdar City The Coalition for Action, has so far been successful in echoing the benefits and capabilities of different renewable energy options. The sector faces a new landscape of maturing technologies, policy challenges and regulatory reforms. The role of policy makers regulators, investors, consumers, prosumers and all stakeholders is crucial to define the renewable energy future. The first Coalition for Action Annual Strategy Meeting will be an opportunity to discuss, re-evaluate and revise the overall strategic direction of the Coalition for Action to ensure alignment with the renewable energy sector in the near term and the coming years. Contact: SWeckend@irena.org 19 January 2017 Biofuture Platform Meeting (Closed Meeting) The Biofuture Platform Coalition is organizing this meeting on the side lines of the IRENA Assembly and WFES IRENA HQ, Masdar City The Biofuture Platform aims to help decarbonise the transport and industry sectors through advanced low-carbon fuels, supporting the global fight against climate change. The Platform was launched at COP-22 in Marrakesh in November 2016 and currently comprises of a 20-country coalition. This first meeting of the Biofuture Platform will include governments, international organizations and possibly private sector representatives. Contact: SOksanen@irena.org
