David Delasanta Executive Vice-President Superior Distillation Performance on High TDS Water Using Flash Vacuum Distillation For Hydrofracking Produced and Flowback Water Symbol: TMEN
Outline ThermoEnergy CAST Flash Vacuum Technology Platform TurboFrac-Produced Water Treatment Case Studies Economics Summary Questions 1
Company Overview Mobile 65 Barrel/Day TurboFrac Unit for Produced Water An established provider of custom water treatment equipment Proprietary technology for the recovery of process chemistry and water 85+ installations 48,000 sq. ft. facility in Worcester, MA CAST Technology Platform 2
Industrial and Produced Water Common Objectives Maximum water recovery with minimum solids disposal for lower operating costs Reuse or recycle -Water -Brine -Process chemistry Separation of contaminates such as metals 3
Industrial and Produced Water Common Characteristics High TDS >30,000 mg/l High Metals Content Acid/Base environments Stringent discharge limits 4
Core Platform: CAST CAST - Controlled Atmosphere Separation Technology Separates and recovers chemicals, metals and nutrients from wastewater Vacuum Flash Distillation Evaporation takes place inside CAST vessel Reduction in boiling point due to applied vacuum Typical CAST unit 5
Typical CAST Process Flow Diagram CAST Process Vessel Liquid Waste Disposal WW From Customer Heat Exchanger Venturi Condenser Cooling Water Supply/Return CAST Feed/ Concentrate Tank CAST Distillate Tank 100 micron prefilter 600 micron bag filter Distillate Vacuum Pump Hot Water Supply/Return 6
Controlled Atmosphere Separation Technology (CAST) Flash Vacuum Distillation Separation & Recovery not Treatment & Disposal Small Footprint 85 Systems Installed Large evaporative volume No process internals No scaling No emissions Recovery of process chemistry and water Fits into most plants Proven lifecycle and maintenance performance over many applications. 7
CAST Advantages Flash distillation and vacuum evaporation with a patented vapor/liquid separation system. CAST Vacuum Technology Advantages Lower Boiling Temperature, typically ºF. Facilitating the use of engineering plastics, reducing the overall cost of manufacturing and customer installed cost. High Flow Forced Flash Distillation Allows for Reduced Carry Over (High Quality Water) Elimination of fugitive discharges. RCRA permit exemption 8
CAST Advantages (continued) CAST System Design Advantages External, commercially available plate and frame heat exchangers Low temperature & high flow rate and large heat exchanger surface area allow for use of low temperature heat sources, such as hot water, low pressure steam or waste heat High flow rate used to produce the necessary spray also produces high shear forces, low temperature differentials and low surface film temperatures in the external plate and frame heat exchangers Spraying of the process solution in flash evaporation contributes to the excellent quality of the condensate/distillate produced 9

TurboFrac Energy Efficiency at a low Capital Cost (2,500 BPD) TurboFrac MVR Power (Kw) Heat (Mbtu/hr) 7.5 Energy Consumption (Kwh/bbl intake) Capital Cost ($/bbl) $0.70 $1.00 Energy Cost per barrel (based on 100,000 mg/l) $0.68 $0.74 All-in Per Barrel Cost $ Assumptions: 60% Recovery of water, $0.12/Kwh, $4.50 Mbtu/hr, 2,500 BBLS/day water
Water Recovery Significantly Impacts Water Management Costs 18
Competitive Advantage TurboFrac vs MVR TurboFrac has a 20-25% cost advantage over MVRs CAST use of FRP and engineering alloys eliminates the chloride corrosion issues and allows CAST systems to operate at lower phs. MVRs operate at higher temperatures and therefore generally can t use fiberglass (FRP) or engineering plastics. MVRs typically limit TDS concentrations to<150,000 mg/l due to the increase in boiling temperature associated with higher salt concentrations. Additionally, as the boiling temperature increases, efficiency significantly decreases with MVRs. MVRs are mechanically more complex than CAST systems and require a much higher level of service and maintenance due to the Roots blower. An MVR s Roots blower is subject to wear, corrosion and damage causing subsequent failure, whereas the CAST design has high durability and reliability. Historically, cost of ownership of MVRs is higher than a CAST due to the higher cost of maintenance, repair and amortization of the capital cost. 19
Summary ThermoEnergy offers sustainable, efficient and low cost recovery systems for difficult to treat waste water problems Our CAST technology platform is proven, versatile, and simple to operate and maintain. We can treat difficult wastewaters containing high TDS, Our systems have a long operating history with low maintenance costs Compared to other distillation systems CAST is superior in terms of costs and performance 20
