4 Combined Heat and Power Combined Heat and Power (CHP), also known as Cogeneration, is the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly way of using fossil or renewable fuel to provide a combined output of heat, steam and power, supplied in either a portable containerised format or in a bespoke engineered solution. Trigeneration Trigeneration is the production of electricity, heat, and chilling all from a single source. The heat and the electricity are produced by the normal operation of the Combined Heat and Power unit, and an Absorption Chiller is used as a means of producing the chilling from the heat output of the Combined Heat and Power. 5 Anaerobic Digestion Anaerobic Digestion to produce Biogas (essentially a mixture of Methane and Carbon Dioxide) has been an established process in the sewage industry for nearly 100 years. From development in the sewage industry it has been used for solid and liquid waste treatment in industrial and municipal applications and more recently for purpose grown agricultural crops. Biogas to Electricity The Scope of Supply of a biogas CHP installation could start at the biogas pipework at the digester. It may contain several discrete process elements all of which may or may not be required. These are usually: The use of Biogas plants has a positive effect on the environment and creates new opportunities for agriculture. The overreaching advantage of Anaerobic Digestion over alternate process technologies is that it is Energy Producing. The feedstocks are all organic in nature and the energy produced is classed as Renewable Energy. The biogas produced can be burnt in a boiler to produce heat, however, the most efficient use of biogas is to utilise an engine to produce Combined Heat and Power. Electricity and Heat generation from Biogas plants is now an important contribution towards greater use of renewable sources and part of the Government response to combat Climate Change. The degree of sophistication of an installation is usually linked with the overall size of the project. A larger sized plant with significant electrical generation/biogas production will have a greater Capital Expenditure scope and would install more of the above elements. This would give greater gas conditioning and better process reliability. Edina are able to supply complete turnkey packages which can include all of the above. In Australia, Edina works in partnership with Biogass Renewables Pty to develop the entire Anaerobic Digestion installation with the first plant operational at the Richgro facility near Perth, Western Australia. 7 8

6 Case Study - Chorley and South Ribble Hospital Following an energy study at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital carried out by Nifes Consulting Group, the opportunity to reduce both CO2 and Energy was identified with the incorporation of a Combined Heat and Power installation. The most economically viable option identified was to install a unit with an electrical output of 600kWe with the exhaust and jacket recovery configured for Low Temperature Hot Water thermal generation. Edina were awarded the contract in mid 2011 and were selected based on the high electrical efficiency achieved from the MWM TCG 2016 V12 gas engine which combined with a fully inclusive maintenance contract provided the hospital with the lowest life cycle operating cost. Other significant factors were Edina s ability to deliver a total turnkey solution and a proven track record within the industry sector. The Turnkey contract included the 600kWe MWM gas engine housed within an acoustic enclosure located adjacent to the existing boiler house with the balance of plant including engine heat recovery system, exhaust system and stack. Furthermore, full mechanical and electrical integration, BMS integration and civil construction were required, making Edina fully responsible for the whole life operation of the supply contract. The project commenced mid 2011 with Edina taking on the full construction and design responsibilities as required under Construction, Design and Management (CDM). A dedicated Project Manager was assigned to coordinate the day to day responsibilities and to provide continuity of contact at site between all contracting parties and the client. Careful consideration had to be given to the stringent noise levels imposed by the hospital. The final solution was to provide the unit in a weather proofed enclosure with a certified noise emission of 60dB(a)/1m. The success of this design was demonstrated by an independent noise consultant s report. The basic principle of the installation is to provide power and hot water to complement the existing site infrastructure. The power generated from the engine feeds a transformer which in turn supplies the site s HV ringmain, with the Combined Heat and Power providing approximately 50% of the hospital s base load power requirements. The jacket water and exhaust gas heat recovery are combined to provide a total of 628kWt heat which serves the hospital s existing central thermal load. The total system was commissioned and handed over to the client in March 2012 and achieves an electrical efficiency of >42% with an overall system efficiency of >87%. The system has reduced the hospital s CO2 emissions to approximately 817 tonnes per year. 60dB(a)/1m 9 10

7 Sewage Gas - Waste Water Anaerobic Digestion of sewage sludge has been undertaken in the UK for nearly 100 years. The basic technology is established and Water plcs have used the biogas produced to power the sewage site and to export to the grid to offset operational costs. Recent environmental requirements and process innovations have led to Advanced Anaerobic Digestion where the sewage sludge is pre-treated thermally and/or enzymically before the digestion process. This pasteurises the sludge and increases conversion to biogas. Often the process requires steam for heating and this is produced from the exhaust heat of the biogas Combined Heat and Power engine. 8 Agriculture The use of farm organic wastes and energy crops is an environmentally friendly diversification for farms and has many advantages. Case Study - Keelings MWM engine provides environmentally friendly alternative to producing energy for multinational fruit and vegetable grower. The treatment of farm wastes such as manure slurries and vegetable wastes in an anaerobic digester would allow easier storage and a better fertiliser value when spread. Agricultural crops such as maize silage, grass silage, wheat and rye will boost the gas production significantly, allowing a steady power production and predictable income return. These inputs can also have benefits when grown as a break crop. The use of agricultural crops in a biogas plant is often the main driver to make a farm based plant economically viable. The biogas production is, via the generation and sale of electricity, usually the main or only financial return for a plant. To achieve best value a high efficiency electrical conversion generation unit is needed, but also with the confidence in the technical backup from the supplier to give reliable continuous operation over the project lifetime. The Combined Heat and Power unit is probably the most vital link in the economic success of an agricultural anaerobic digestion project. The choice of supplier can be critical to project success. The MWM generation units supplied by Edina have the overall highest efficiency range for biogas on the market. The construction of the containerised unit and site installation is undertaken in house by Edina so meets all UK regulations. Global fruit and vegetable grower, Keelings approached Edina with a requirement to increase efficiencies, reduce energy costs and generate additional income to their manufacturing plant at Dublin, Ireland. Through the application of Combined Heat and Power (CHP), Edina supplied, installed and maintains a CHP unit for two of Keelings large greenhouses. The system consists of a 2MW MWM TCG 2020 V20 natural gas fuelled engine coupled with an advanced exhaust gas cleaning system known as Selective Catalyst Reduction. The CHP unit helped mitigate some of the effects of increasing energy costs and carbon taxes for Keelings, generating an additional revenue stream from electricity sales to the national grid, and provides them with a source of CO2 to fertilise their crop. The MWM TCG 2020 V20 has a high thermal efficiency of 52.5%, and 43.6% electrical efficiency, giving a total efficiency of 96.1%. The agricultural crop will have a production cost making it even more important to extract the best value out of the gas produced. The Operation and Maintenance available from Edina will guarantee (hence will exceed) 8,000 hours operation per year every year

9 Coal Mine Methane Gas Utilisation Waste to Energy Coal Mining produces methane gas. If this is released without treatment it has a major impact on the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming. From active and closed Coal Mines to booster stations, Edina has the answer. Coal Mine Gas Utilisation Coal mine gas is released from seams of coal during mining activities. We distinguish between several kinds of coal mine gas: Methane exhausted from unexplored coal beds (CBM), methane coming from active underground mining (CMM), methane released from closed mines (AMM) and lean gas. Due to the high methane content of 30 to 95%, especially CBM, CMM and AMM are suitable for the utilisation in gas engines. Only lean gas cannot be used for energy generation, because of the low methane content of 0,2 1,5%. The use of coal mine gas in a gas engine has two main advantages: 1) Methane is converted into CO2 by combustion. Methane is up to 25 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas and extremely harmful to the environment. 2) Up to 90% of the energy bound in methane is converted into power and warmth. The treatment and disposal of organic waste is an ever increasing problem. Organic waste disposed of to landfill is often banned, and the spreading of waste to land where allowed requires extensive permitting. Organic waste can be stabilised so that it will not degrade further by two distinct biological processes. These are aerobic composting and drying or anaerobic digestion. The advantage of anaerobic digestion is that it is a net energy producer in the form of biogas whereas composting requires energy to aerate the waste so that the process can take place. The pre treatment of waste before anaerobic digestion can be a large part of an overall plant process and will depend on the form the waste is supplied in. Farm wastes and on site food production wastes may require minimal processing. Commercial waste and source separated household waste will require more de-packaging and pasteurisation etc. Whereas black bag bin waste would require a full Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant with Anaerobic Digestion. In all cases the biogas conversion to heat and power will provide a significant if not the majority of income for the processing plant. Therefore, it is essential to extract the best value out of the gas produced. To achieve this, a high efficiency electrical conversion unit is needed but with the confidence in the technical backup from the supplier to give reliable continuous operation over the project lifetime. 10 Landfill Gas Landfill gas is produced by the uncontrolled anaerobic degradation of waste in the landfill to produce landfill gas. If this is released to atmosphere the methane content is a powerful, greenhouse gas. All current and recently closed UK landfill sites have landfill gas collection systems to flare the gas or more usually to generate electricity for the grid. Although the UK Renewable Obligation support for new and additional landfill gas schemes has been reduced the rising energy costs and power prices still make this attractive for sites. To maximise the site potential return, the best electrical conversion efficiency is needed to extract the best value out of the gas produced.
