3 COGENERATION BASICS At the Cogeneration, mechanical and thermal energy is obtained simultaneously in one process. This can be realized by many technologies. The energy generation can be provided by combustion engines, gas turbines, stirling engines, a. respectively. The generated mechanical energy is primarily converted into electrical current via a generator. There are other variants in which the mechanical energy is used to operate a compressor for generating compressed air. In many cases, the use of heat is achieved by using the waste heat generated during the generation of mechanical energy. Heat energy is used to make this thermal energy available to the operator. Furthermore, hot exhaust gases from combustion processes are used to provide steam, warm or hot water. Special exhaust gas heat exchangers are used for this purpose. The combined production means that the fuel is optimally used and efficiencies of more than 90% can be achieved. 3
4 BLOCK HEAT AND POWER PLANT BASICS I A Block heat and power plant (CHP) is the combination of a combustion engine with a generator. The engine is a gas-fueled engine, which is operated with earth, bio, sewage, landfill or liquefied gas. The generated mechanical energy is converted into electrical current by the generator. The waste heat generated during operation of the engine is dissipated via a cooling water circuit. Via a plate heat exchanger, the thermal energy of the cooling water can be transferred to the customer's heating system. This lowers the temperature in the cooling water circuit, which protects the motor from overheating. The thermal energy of the hot exhaust gases is also supplied to the customer's heating system via an exhaust gas heat exchanger. The exhaust gases are cooled down to 110 C (with natural gas) or 180 C (with special gas operation). As a result, the exhaust gas losses are minimized and a total efficiency of up to 90% is achieved. Advantages: Optimal fuel use (minimum losses) Cost savings for the customer Independence from rising energy costs Operational safety of the customer installation by means of a network replacement function 4

6 BLOCK HEAT AND POWER PLANT OPERATIONS I Mains parallel operation: Represents the usual mode of operation of CHPs The generator generates parallel to the existing mains current Heat-conducting parallel network operation: The start request of the CHP is based on the local heat requirement Primary goal: Covering the heat demand (additional demand is covered by a peak load boiler) If possible, generated electricity is consumed by itself, a possible surplus is fed into the public grid Conducted mains parallel operation: The start request of the CHP is based on the local power requirement Primary objective: to meet the demand for electricity (additional demand is covered by the public grid) Heat generated is self-consumed as far as possible; any surplus is discharged into the atmosphere via an emergency cooler This is often the case with islands and EEG plants 6
7 BLOCK HEAT AND POWER PLANT OPERATIONS II Isolated operation: The CHP or the object to be supplied has no connection to the public electricity network Serves the object supply (eg remote buildings) Current mode of operation Emergency power operation: In the event of a power failure, the CHP is first disconnected from the mains and then ramped up again in isolated operation Maintains electricity and heat supply Current mode of operation 7

The CHP units were installed in 2 containers, which are designed for the high noise protection of an adjacent residential area. Due to the proximity to a stream, the containers were designed to be highly water-resistant. Particularities: Flood protection (80cm) Highest soundproofing (40dBA in 10m) Superordinate control for needs-oriented Operation of the CHP units Primary energy savings (100% feed): et237 EG MA: 25,2% et104 EG MA: 23,5% 13
14 REFERENCE 2 (CONSTRUCTION YEAR: 2015) STADTWERKE BEXBACH The Stadtwerke Bexbach operate two et140 EG MA for self-supply with electric current and hot water. The BHKW's are used to heat the adjacent outdoor swimming pool. Due to this proximity, the containers have a high noise protection. Particularities: Space-saving design Highest soundproofing (40dBA in 10m) Primary energy savings (100% feed): et140 EG MA: 24,5% 14
15 REFERENCE 3 (CONSTRUCTION YEAR: 2014) LANDWIRTSCHAFTSZENTRUM EICHHOF The agricultural center Eichhof operates et124 SG MA for self-supply with electric current and hot water. The BHWK is operated with its own biogas, which is produced from manure and various plant species within research. The cogeneration plants are operated with local sewage and biogas. The entire plant consists of 3 connected containers. The CHP is operated with its own biogas. The hot water is provided via a special exhaust gas heat exchanger. Particularities: Space-saving design Hot water boiler including safety technology Gas compressor Primary energy savings (100% feed): et191 SG MA: 37,2% 18

The CHP is operated with its own biogas. In and on the container (12m length) were accommodated all necessary plant components, including an oil tank, a gas cooling and an emergency torch. The active carbon filter was placed next to the container.
