11 D7.1 Hauraton Surface Drainage Solutions October 2013 Channel Slope Options 1. Constant Hauraton is a constant depth system. Most sites have natural or built in contours and by utilizing these contours a constant fall system is by far the most economical and easiest form of channel and grate system to install. Even with only the slightest fall, water will always create its own hydraulics flow (to a low point/outlet). With an increase in volume (rainfall) this flow will only increase. 2. Pre Sloped Channel system with built in slope (approx 5mm per metre) to provide a continuous fall through the channel run. 3. Stepped Channel system with varying depths to give a stepped system through the channel run. Considerations of different slope options Time/Cost Generally a constant fall system associated with a constant depth trench is quicker and easier to lay and install, therefore saving money on installation costs. Damage If an individual channel in a pre sloped or stepped system is broken or damaged (especially with polymer concrete) a considerable time delay can occur while waiting for the specific channel to be replaced. Outflow All channel systems have a maximum capacity/outflow. This outflow is governed by the size of the outfall pipe from the sump. By increasing the depth of channel via a pre sloped or stepped channel capacity to the outflow can be over extended causing flooding. Capacity A constant fall system with a channel depth of 152mm will have the same capacity as a pre sloped channel system with channel depths ranging from 112mm deep up to 192mm deep. A pre slopped channel system ranging 112 to 192mm deep consists of 13 different channel sections each one increasing in 5mm increments. Channel Capacity Calculation: Hauraton offer a free comprehensive hydraulic calculation package that can tailor make a constant fall system to suit your needs. Installation Basic tools required Level: To ascertain channel fall to outlet (sump if required) Spade or Digger: To excavate (depending on trench width and depth). String line: To establish finished level (at least 3mm below surrounding surface). Concrete tools: To finish concrete surround (float, trowel, etc). Basic Installation (General Instructions Only) Establish low point for outlet, or sump if installing and mark out channel trench accordingly. Excavate trench to desired depth, width and length, with trench depth ensure bedding material is taken into consideration. Run string line to establish channels finished height, recommended at least 3.5mm below surrounding finished surface. If using an outlet sump install first, and run channel away from the outlet sump. Pour bedding concrete (up to 100mm) in bottom of trench, bed channel into trench ensuring channel finishes parallel with string line. Once bedding concrete has set, and system is at required level, fill the remainder of channel with concrete to surrounding surface. Full installation instructions for Standard, Plus and Super in cobbles, asphalt and concrete available on request. Tip: Install system with grates upside down to avoid concrete splatter on finished surface.
