about donaldson membranes Donaldson Membranes is a leading worldwide manufacturer of expanded microporous PTFE membranes, films and laminates. We are a technology driven company committed to satisfying customer needs through innovative research and development, with production and sales offices located throughout Europe, America and Asia. Donaldson places great emphasis on high quality manufacturing and customer service and has been registered ISO9001 and environmental certificate ISO14001, testaments to our high standards. What is Tetratex? Tetratex is a proprietary expanded microporous PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane, manufactured solely by Donaldson Membranes. It is laminated to a variety of base substrates to provide a complete range of media including woven and felted textile media for conversion into filter bags as well as pleatable media for cartridge style elements. eptfe filter media can enhance the performance of your fabric filter by utilizing surface filtration technology as opposed to traditional depth filtration methods. Donaldson Membranes has been solving challenging problems in the industrial filtration market since Fabric filters are an intrinsic part of many industrial processes. Whether a filter collecting the actual product being manufactured or a pure environmental emission control measure, there is a clear need to maximize performance to ensure collection rates are high, particulate emissions are low, and gas flows are maintained at optimum levels for the process concerned. Each and every application is different and carries with it a specific set of challenges. A host of factors can influence the performance of any given fabric filter, but the selection of an appropriate filter media is critical. Tetratex membrane is thermally stable up to 500 F.
applications With emissions from modern coal fired utility plants having to comply with stringent regulations, the adoption of high performance Tetratex eptfe membrane filter media in flue gas fabric filters can help ensure operators are able to maintain process emissions well below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limits. Donaldson Tetratex eptfe membrane filter media today is employed in a wide variety of power generation applications with numerous flue gas cleaning systems benefitting from its advanced surface filtration technology. MUNICIPAL - CLINICAL - HAZARDOUS - INDUSTRIAL - COAL-FIRED BOILER- BIOMASS Preparing for the new mats regulations Efficient plant operations are key to productivity and ultimate profitability of your organization. Tetratex ensures plants operate with minimum downtime and maximum compliance. Tighter regulations now require the Power Industry to reduce outlet emissions. Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) for coal fired power plants was announced by Environmental Protec- Emission Type Acid Gases Heavy Metals Mercury Emission Limit lbs/mmbtu 0.03 lbs/mmbtu 1.2 lbs/tbtu tion Agency (EPA) on December 21, The MATS regulation applies to electric utility steam generating units with a capacity of 25MW or greater that burn coal or oil to generate electricity for sale through the electrical grid to the public. The purpose of MATS is to regulate the emission limits of acid gases, toxic heavy metals and mercury. Non-mercury heavy metals emissions will be measured via filterable particulate matter (PM) which serves as a proxy for non-mercury toxic metals. The table above outlines the allowable emission limits for existing plants. Many utilities will be injecting additional sorbents, PAC, and other emission control additives in advance of the fabric filters to reduce their overall stack emissions of acid gases, NOX, toxic heavy metals, and mercury. This increases the overall load and the importance of the fabric filters. Once the particulates reach the fabric filter baghouse, Tetratex eptfe filter media will successfully remove solid particles from the air stream and help keep outlet emissions within the limits of MATS.
Tetratex in action TETRATEX reduces energy consumption at Swedish Biomass incinerator Tetratex High Efficiency Woven Glass filter media provided trouble-free performance on a waste-toenergy plant at a paper mill. Fuel: Paper Sludge Gas Volume: 109,000 CFM Operating Temperature: 392 F/200 C Peak Total Filtration Area: 35,325 sq ft Inlet Dust Loading: 390 gr/ft2 Particulate Emissions: <.004 g/sdf3 Results The client is extremely satisfied with the Tetratex filter media Reduced maintenance costs Reduced energy consumption Increased system throughput TETRATEX reduces emissions at turkish paper production factory Tetratex High Efficiency Woven Glass filter media has helped to eliminate the use of non-renewable fossil fuels, and to decrease the impact on the environment at a Turkish paper production plant. Fuel: Wood Waste Gas Volume: 70,500 CFM Operating Temperature: 329 F/165 C Peak Total Filtration Area: 11,845 sq ft Results The site Plant Manager, commented: The production of steam has been made more successful since the implementation of the new Tetratex filterbags; we are now able to lower the amount of LPG fuel we use, therefore saving costs to the company and also the environment.
Tetratex in action TETRATEX reduces emissions at Germany Biomass Power Plant Tetratex High Efficiency Woven Glass filter media has helped to improve filter bag life and reduce environmental emission levels. Due to technical issues in the process, the baghouse was not in use for a year, after which time the only sleeves still intact in the filter chambers were the #6255 Tetratex Ultra High Efficiency bags; the alternative PPS bags had become tarnished and stressed. Operating Temperature: 500 F/260 C Peak Total Filtration Area: 5085 sq ft Results 6 year bag life to date Achievement of 14 MW/h, as a result of increased air permeability of the filter media at maximum pressure drop from the ventilator. Reduced downtime and energy consumption Increased efficiency by 20-30% TETRATEX eptfe NEEDLEFELT increases bag life at MSW Waste Incinerator in Japan A MSW waste incineration plant was suffering from short bag life due to the exposure of high acidic vapor for long durations. After Tetratex was installed the filter bags were not affected by the concentrated acidic gases and were no longer prone to deterioration which has increased the the bag life drastically compared to conventional media. Dust Type: Fly Ash Gas Volume: 108,700 CFM Operating Temperature: <500 F/260 C No. of Bags 1,090 Results Reduced maintenance costs Increased bag life Operating pressure drop reduced from >4 to <4 wg
Depth vs surface filtration There are two key functions of a solid/gas filter the capture of dust particles in the gas stream and the maintenance of gas flow through the media employed. For any filter media to operate effectively, it must satisfy on both these counts. For collection to be effected, any individual particle in the gas stream must be slowed, intercepted and collected on or within the filter media. In the case of conventional filter fabrics the interstices between the fibers within the structure of the media are often considerably larger than the particles to be collected. So, how are conventional media able to collect fine particles? They do so by the penetration of dust particles into the surface to close off these open pores and by the formation of a filter cake on the surface of the media. This is termed depth filtration. Without a filter cake on the surface, conventional filter media are rarely able to collect fine particulate efficiently; media blinding and atmospheric emissions occur over time as individual dust particles penetrate into and beyond the filter media. Depth Filtration Particles penetrate the structure of the media and form a filter cake on the surface Surface Filtration Particles are collected on the surface of the membrane Tetratex filter media utilizes true surface filtration technology. A microporous eptfe membrane, is laminated to the surface of a supporting substrate and it is this membrane which acts as the filter media. The construction of the membrane, with millions of pores per square inch, is such that sub-micron particles are captured on its surface. The backing substrate is merely a support and plays little or no part in the filtration process. All particulate is collected on the surface of the membrane. No reliance on a filter cake. No penetration of dust into or beyond the media.
filtration challenges What is tetratex Tetratex filter media can enhance the performance of your fabric filter by utilizing surface filtration technology as opposed to traditional depth filtration methods. The benefits of Reduced Emissions 1 Near-zero emissions can be achieved due to the microporous structure of the membrane. Particulate is collected on the surface, reducing environmental emissions within regulatory limits. Reduced Energy Consumption 2 Significant savings in power consumption can be achieved by maintaining required airflow at a reduced filter DP. Surface filtration principles inhibit particle migration resulting in increased cleaning efficiency. Production Savings 3 Increased system airflow can be achieved through reduced filter pressure drop, significantly reducing the cost per KW of product. Reduced Downtime 4 Excellent cake release capability and low cake formation allows for reduced cleaning and less mechanical stresses. This helps to prolong bag life and reduce bag changes. operational savings Tetratex media can provide a lower pressure drop than conventional media which significantly reduces the cost per KW of product and increase capacity. INCREASES Airflow Filter bag life Product collection Capability for process upset recovery Dust cake management for acid gas Emission control DECREASES Particulate emissions Baghouse pressure drop Cleaning regime Maintenance costs Bag changes Chemically aggressive gas conditions
