6 Know-how, which attracts: Electromagnetic Flowmeter About 1832 Michael Faraday proposed using the principle of Electromagnetic Induction for measuring flow velocity. His first experiments were attempts to measure the velocity of the river Thames in England. Even though the experiments resulted in failure, they are recognized as the first experiments in electromagnetic flow measurements. Whenever the flowrate of conductive liquids, slurries or sludges is to be measured, the Electromagnetic Flowmeters from ABB are in their element. They have been recognized for many decades among the most successful in the market place and find application in almost all branches of industry. The FXM2000 Line can also be installed where it is too hot for other electromagnetic flowmeters: the high temperature design can be used up to 180 C fluid temperature; or when two flow ranges, an integrated preset counter, a design for metering fruit juices and non-homogeneous fluids are required. A wide spectrum of liner and electrode materials: In the flanged designs, a choice can be made between PTFE, hard rubber, soft rubber and PFA liners. For hygienic applications a vacuum tight PFA liner is available. Stainless steel, Hastelloy, Titanium, Tantalum or Platinum-Iridium are materials from which the electrodes for the EMF instrument lines can be made. Problems due to coatings on the pipe walls? For applications where the fluids tend to deposit an insulating coating on the pipeline or could corrode the metal electrodes, the FXM2000 (COPA-CM) with a capacitive electrode design can be installed. The signal electrodes are mounted behind the liner and do not come into direct contact with the fluid. In addition to a reduction in installation costs (the installation of a supply power cable at the meter site is no longer necessary) the power costs are also reduced (max. 0.5 Watt power consumption). A 4 20 ma current output is incorporated in the FXT4000 which is also utilized to power the flowmeter and to provide a scaled pulse output. 8 The reliable, accurate sensor for waste water: FXP4000 (PARTI-MAG II) The FXP4000 (PARTI-MAG II) is the established electromagnetic flowmeter system for full and partially filled pipelines. High accuracy, measurements without inverts, short in- and outlet sections and easy operation are the key features of this system. Its technical superiority and accuracy have been confirmed by many years of successful use in partially filled pipes to measure waste water and combined waste water discharges in municipal and industrial waste water treatment facilities, in disposal sites or for channel network management. Simple flow metering at a low price The flowmeters of the FXL-Line (COPA-XL and Miniflow) are smaller, lighter and more compact. The low price, the easy installation and operation are additional compelling features. FXL5000 (Miniflow) is of particular interest, when a flowmeter is to be installed in existing plastic pipelines. With threaded adapters for plastic or copper pipelines the installation is made in no time at all. It has an unsurpassed accuracy for large as well as very small flowrates. The APROBE (Aquaprobe) is a stationary or portable electromagnetic flow insertion probe. It is installed through a boss and does not require that the pipeline be disassembled. Two metering systems are preferred: the intelligent system FES7000 (Fill-MAG) and the flowsensor FXF2000 (COPA-XF). Fill and batch operations with the FES7000 result in improved quality control, a more exact and reproducible fill cycle and thereby a reduction in production and product costs. The flowmeter system is CIP/SIP-capable, minimizes the amount of safety overfill, requires minimal maintenance and repair and has been granted the essential certifications. 10 Innovations that create a whirl: Vortex and Swirl Flowmeters When a flowing fluid meets an obstruction, pressure variations are created in the fluid, which cause eddies to shed at the obstruction. This phenomenon is utilized in the Vortex and Swirl flowmeters. The eddies are formed in the fluid at a geometrically defined obstruction (Vortex and Swirl bodies) whose frequency is measured by a sensor. The flowrate of liquids, gases and steam is determined precisely and reliably from this frequency measurement. 12 A force to be reckoned with: Coriolis Mass Flowmeter The rotation of the earth was first demonstrated in 1851 at the Pantheon in Paris using a Foucault pendulum. The rotation of the earth gives rise to a Coriolis force on a moving pendulum, which causes it to deflect. ABB s successful FCM2000 flowmeter operates using this principle. Based on the hot-film anemometer principle it directly measures the mass flow and so requires no temperature or pressure correction. Just as the dandelion makes clever use of this phenomenon for spreading its seeds, variable area flowmeters use this principle to measure flows effectively and accurately. For the measurement of gases, liquids and steam at low flow rates, a large range of models assure that there is a suitable flowmeter for every application. The series starts with the SNAP-IN Purgemeter can be used to measure the low flowrates in bubbler applications or for laboratory flow measurements. It continues with an extensive selection of glass tube flowmeters and finishes with metal tube flowmeters available as simple indicators or models with two-wire transmitters. Metal tube flowmeters are especially well suited for use with aggressive or opaque liquids and for steam measurements. The flowmeter features high accuracy, (0.2% of rate) over a wide application range. The system operates in very difficult operating environments with the highest accuracy requirements. The compact design protects against mechanical damage and assures long term stability and interruption insensitive measurements.
