1 Toxics Substance Reduction Plan Summary For Particulate Matter (PM10) Particulate Matter (PM2.5) 1 Conlon Drive Perth, ON K7H 3N1 Revision Date Revision Description Issued By: Approved By (Facility): Rev.0 Nov 8/13 Original N.Lewis (Pinchin Environmental) R. Purdy November 8, 2013
2 INTRODUCTION Facility Summary produces aluminum castings for the automotive industry, using mainly A356 grade aluminum. The main parts produced include Tesla cradles and structural parts, differential carriers for GM, as well as charge coolers, engine mounts and ladder frames. The Site has 5 aluminum melters with 2 casting machines per melter. Metal molds are prepared using abrasive blasting and are coated on-site in the Dicote area. Sand cores are generated predominately through the cold box process, located within the central east portion of the facility. In this process, sand is mixed with triethlyamine gas and isocure binders to form cores. In addition, a hot box (shell core) sand core process is located on the north side of the facility, but is not used regularly. Prepared sand (including plastic binders) is heated to form cores in this process. The cores are then coated with Refcobar core coating material. Each cell consists of a melter and two low pressure machines. Aluminum alloy ingots are melted and the molten aluminum is passed through a degassing stage to remove hydrogen. The aluminum melting and holding process generates an aluminum oxide deposit called dross that is treated with a fluxing agent then skimmed from the melted aluminum surface and placed in a dross pan to cool. The dross is sent off site for recycling (hazardous material). The molten aluminum is then cast into permanent steel molds that are fitted with the sand core. Once a casting is made, it is cooled and then passed to a shake-out machine that removes the sand core. The non-hazardous sand core is sent off site to be reused as an additive in cement manufacture. Once cooled the castings are transferred for deburring and grinding. Deburring and grinding activities are completed by hand or using CNC machines in the central and western portions of the facility. Depending on the part, heat treatment with subsequent part quenching may also be completed within the central-west portion of the Site. Two x-ray machines are used as part of the inspection process, located in the central and west portions of the building. Magna International Inc. Magna International Inc. 6 2.0 STATEMENT OF INTENT (FOR PM10 & PM2.5) In accordance with Magna s Corporate Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Policy ( we are committed to an operating philosophy based on fairness and concern for employees, customers and the communities in which we operate. Magna s objective as expressed in the HSE Policy is to be an industry leader in health, safety and environmental practices in all of our operations with the intention, through technological innovation and process efficiencies, to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment and to provide safe and healthful working conditions. In keeping with Magna s decentralized organizational structure, facilities are responsible for setting site specific objectives to meet the objectives within the Magna HSE Policy to: improve the efficient use of natural resources, including energy; minimize waste streams and emissions; and implement effective recycling programs in our manufacturing operations, through the use of locally set continuous improvement targets. With reference to the Ontario Toxics Reduction Act, the reduction objectives are outlined in Section 4 of this Plan for the reportable substances Particulate Matter (PM10) and Particulate Matter (PM2.5) at. 3.0 SUBSTANCES REQUIRING PLANS The following substances require plans PM10 & PM2.5 - based on 2012 Toxics Reduction Act accounting information. 4.0 OBJECTIVES OF THE PLAN & ANY TARGETS Magna International Inc. prides itself on technical innovation in order to produce high quality automotive components in an environmentally responsible manner. This plan documents the options available to to reduce the creation of Particulate Matter at the facility. At this time, there are no specific targets for reduction, however, as is our standard practice, we will continue to meet regularly with our staff and look for opportunities to reduce our use of Particulate Matter. 5.0 OPTIONS TO BE IMPLEMENTED (OR STATEMENT THAT NONE ARE TO BE IMPLEMENTED) commitment to continuous improvement has resulted in an extraordinary lean and efficient manufacturing facility. The facility s continuous improvement measures, coupled with the acknowledgment that the customer provides the specifications for the raw materials processed at the site mean that there are no additional options for the facility to implement.
