6 Multi-Stage Steam Turbines I Key Component Modules Turbine Casing The compact construction of the turbine casing minimises thermal stresses created during raid start-ups. For a perfect sealing, the top and bottom casings are fastened with high alloy stud bolts that are uniformly and thermally pre-tightened without applying any torque. The horizontally split casing, made of cast steel, is supported through the centreline where the top casing integrates with the bottom casing. The controls valves are mounted thermo-elastically within the main casing. A sturdy pedestal supporting the turbine casing is reinforced at each end providing true centreline support. Rotor The balanced and solid integral rotor is incorporated with an overspeed trip device. The soundness of the material is verified using the latest ultrasonic testing techniques. The pressure balancing holes through the turbine rotor wheels ensure each wheel is surrounded by uniform steam pressure to minimise the axial thrusts and prevent large thrusts under normal circumstances. Combined Stop & Emergency Valve The combined stop and emergency valve is an oil-operated, quick-closing valve that can be opened manually or electronically, enabling it to be used to run-up the turbine. The horizontally mounted valve can be removed without disconnecting the main steam piping. A stainless steel steam strainer is incorporated on the inlet side of the valve to prevent ingress of foreign matter. With quick shutoff and hydraulic actuated turbines, automated testing while the turbine is in operation (in compliance with API 612 standard) is possible. Multi Control Valves The four vertically-assembled multi-control valves will eliminate the complication of horizontal support between valve spindle and guide bushes. The valves also operate independently against individual compression springs providing additional protection during emergency shutdown. Each valve controls the admission steam from a group of first stage nozzles while maintaining suitable pressure in the turbine s high-pressure casing. During the turbine s automatic start-up, the multi control valves are partially opened to enable the steam to heat the casing in a uniform way. Casing heating minimises thermal stresses thus preventing contact between the rotor shaft and its sealing. 6

7 Advanced Blade Technology High efficiencies are achieved through the advanced low-reaction blade profiles and multi-cylinder configurations. Using the latest technology for threedimensional flow analysis, optimised turbine designs ensure the most efficient conversion of thermal energy to power. Automated Shaft Sealing Technology Floating labyrinth seals assembled on the diaphragms can be easily replaced to maintain effective shaft sealing and sealing between stages. Bearings The thrust and journal tilting-pad bearings are coated with white metal that produces high dynamic stability for the rotor. The thrust bearings also maintain axial thrust in both directions. Controlled Extraction Valve The automatic controlled extraction valve is incorporated on the turbine casing with direct action via a hydraulic actuator. A gate valve is used to control the pressure in the extraction piping. It operates simultaneously in the admission steam for the low-pressure section of the turbine. Overspeed Trip System Overspeed protection is ensured by the tripleredundancy Woodward Protech 203 system with two out of three voting. 7

17 I Overhung Series The Overhung single-stage turbine is high efficient low-reaction turbine and has a simple construction, for low maintenance and extremely reliable operation.
