11 PFISTERER CrossPower off-grid energy supplies through microgrids Microgrids are compact, localized energy networks independent of centralized energy supplies Energy is generated from sources such as photovoltaic systems and wind turbines and is used immediately or stored in batteries. Microgrids can vary significantly in size from autonomously supplying a wood cabin through to remote settlements, industrial plants or islands with megawatt capacities. 11

18 Financing models Energy contracting Purchase Energy contracting represents a model for financing, installing and operating energy plants via a third party (a service provider specializing in this field). This service provider is known as a contractor. Leasing In energy-delivery contracting, the contractor provides planning, financing and installation as well as the running, operation, servicing and maintenance of the energy plant. The contractor can also take over and modernize any existing plant. The contractor is responsible for the procurement and deployment of the required final energy. Sale of kw hours In energy-saving contracting (also known as performance contracting), the contractee transfers the investment in energy-efficiency measures for an existing plant and/or the operation of the plant. The object of the contract here is to meet guaranteed savings for in a client's plant. 18
