3 A-3 Information about the Project A-3.1 Short description of the environmental problem Waterways in the entire area of Kosovo are heavily polluted due to the lack of treatment of wastewater and the disposal of solid waste. The main rivers downstream of larger municipalities and industry, especially downstream of Prishtina, are polluted to such an extent that the water can not be used for water supply or not for even irrigation in some places. A-3.2 Origins and positive environmental impact of the project A Wastewater in the Prishtina region needs to be treated to meet EU and local Project standards related to wastewater collection and treatment. justification A Project objectives A Project components (phases) Construction of a WWTP that will treat all wastewater of the Prishtina region, taking into account existing and projected wastewater effluents from municipal sewer net-works and major industries, the characteristics of recipient water bodies, obligations of international conventions and agreements, and anticipated financial resources available. 1. Primary treatment phase = physical/mechanical wastewater treatment 2. Secondary treatment phase = biological treatment 3. Tertiary treatment phase = biological treatment involving phosphorus removal 4. Tertiary treatment phase supplemented with nitrogen removal = biological treatment involving phosphorus and nitrogen removal A Expected positive environmental effects A Health impact of the project Pollution of water and environment is considerably reduced i.e. to acceptable limits. The main rivers downstream of the larger municipalities in the Prishtina region and industry, especially downstream of Prishtina, can be used for water supply or even for irrigation in some places. Discharges of the bacteria and viruses dangerous to human health will decrease. A inhabitants Size of population benefiting from the project implementation A Regional Country Cross border (County) Local Scale of impact of the project A-3.3 Project status Performance [%] Start [MM/YY] End [MM/YY] A Pre-feasibility study 100 % 02/ 04 06/04 A Feasibility study A Detailed engineering designs A EIA A Permits A Financing A Procurements A Construction
4 A A Operation (for existing projects) Description of critical factors affecting project implementation: It is probably impossible to mobilize resources for simultaneous investment in constructing such wastewater system. Even if the financial resources were available, it is not feasible to implement such a massive investment programme in a very short time, because the construction costs tend to escalate rapidly if the capacity of contractors and labour are overloaded.
