Cells Strand: Cells, Flow of Matter & Energy, Heredity Matter & Energy Heredity Plant structure and function including stem, leaf, leaf vein, root and root hair 1.) Basic needs of plants and animals 2.) Plants make their own food while animals must consume other plants or animals for energy. 1.) Organisms go through life cycles and change throughout their lives: -Life cycle versus 2.) Some characteristics are passed from parent to offspring and some are not. Plant cell structure versus animal cell structure 1.) How we classify organisms according to what they eat. 2.) How an organism gets its energy determines where it exists on an energy pyramid and within a food web. 1.) Complete versus incomplete 2.) Members of a species must reproduce and replace themselves in order to continue the species itself. Plant cell structure and function versus animal cell structure and function 1.) All life is dependent upon the sun s energy via plants utilizing it to make their own energy through photosynthesis 2.) Producers are the basis of all food chains, webs and energy pyramids 3.) A basic understanding of the process of photosynthesis Not addressed in fifth grade. 1.) Identify traits that are inherited versus environmental. 2.) Recognize that traits are passed from parent to offspring during reproduction.

Strand: Interdependence and Biodiversity Interdependence Biodiversity 1.) Plants and animals compete for resources such as air, food, water and space. 2.) Ecosystems are composed of living and nonliving components. 1.) Identify an organism as thriving, threatened, endangered or extinct. 2.) Match an organism to its fossil. 3.) Evaluate how specific characteristics can enable an organism to be well suited for its given environment. Ecosystem Impacts: 1.) Predator Prey relationships and their impact on an ecosystem 2.) Competition among organisms and its impact on an ecosystem 1.) Infer reasons why an organism may become endangered or extinct. 2.) Specific examples of adaptations both physical and behavioral and how those enable an organism to survive: -mimicry -hibernation -camouflage -migration 1.) Relationships amongst non-human organisms: -producer/consumer -predator/prey -commensalism -parasitism (host/parasite) -mutualism 2.) Introducing human impacts on an ecosystem 3.) Introducing natural disasters and their impacts on an ecosystem 1.) Explain what information we can obtain from fossils about a past environment. 2.) Characteristics of amphibians, birds, mammals, fish and reptiles that enable to them to survive in their given environments

Universe Strand: Universe, Earth, Atmosphere Earth Atmosphere An understanding of the basic movements of the components of a solar system: star, planets and moons --including the difference between rotation and revolution. 1.) Identify common geologic features on the earth. 2.) Physical properties of rocks 3.) natural versus man-made 4.) natural resources and conservation 1.) Cloud types and the weather associated with them 2.) Weather instruments and what they measure 1.) Lunar phases including sequencing them and the various positions of the sun, moon and earth system throughout the month 2.) A basic understanding of the earth, moon and sun system for a solar and lunar eclipse. 1.) How weathering and erosion change the surface of our earth 2.) How natural resources help us in our everyday lives 1.) Water cycle 2.) Weather versus climate 1.) Order of planets from sun, and other random common facts about the planets 2.) Being able to interpret a data table of information about the solar system and draw conclusions from it 3.) Use of star charts and telescopes How plate tectonics shape our earth Not addressed in fifth grade. 1.) How the following factors affect climate: -altitude -latitude -coastal -rain shadow effect -land and sea breezes

Matter Strand: Matter and Energy Energy 1.) Physical Properties 2.) Mixtures and methods for separating them 1.) Sources of heat 2.) Conduction and conductors versus insulators 1.) Appropriate tools and units for measuring mass, volume and temperature 2.) Introduction to phase changes (states of matter) 1.) Various forms of energy and how they transfer to each other: -chemical -radiant -mechanical -light 2.) Introduction to light behavior: -opaque -translucent -transparent -reflection -refraction -absorption 1.) Introduction to chemical properties and chemical changes including burning, tarnishing, and rusting 2.) Chemical properties/changes versus physical properties/changes 1.) Causes for phase changes (addition and removal of heat) 2.) Factors influencing the rate at which phase changes occur 1.) Potential versus kinetic energy 2.) Various types of heat transfer: -conduction -convection -radiation grade.

Motion Strand: Motion and Forces in Nature Forces in Nature Balanced and unbalanced forces Pitch and Volume Magnetism: magnet magnetic materials interactions 1.) Motion is relative to a change in position 2.) The relationship between speed, distance and time 3.) Friction and how it affects motion Not addressed in fourth grade 1.) Magnetism: magnet magnet interactions 2.) Electricity: -circuits -static electricity The relationship between force, mass and distance traveled grade grade 1.) Gravity 2.) Factors that influence the rate at which an object falls to the earth
