The Evolution of Capacity & Generation Mix from Dominant Oil to Sustainable Energy Mix FY1990 FY2000 FY2012 FY2020 FY1990 FY2000 FY2012 FY2020 2
Finding An Optimal & Sustainable Balance ENERGY SECURITY COMPETITIVE SUSTAINABILITY SAFETY ASPECT COST Amidst increasing demand growth, depleting energy resource and fuel security issues Cost-efficiency of generation choices e.g. solar is green but not cost competitive Climate change & sustainability drive, often conflicting with cost-competitiveness and energy security Safety & regulatory aspects of fuel of choice e.g. coal, gas, Renewable Energy etc. Four major elements creating a maze of complexity, requiring a balance to achieve an optimal equilibrium state for sustainability, security and stability 3
Towards Sustainable Generation - Energy Supply Hydro 6% Oil 3% Distillate 2% Gas /LNG Coal Mini-Hydro Coal 46% Gas 43% EE & DSM/DR Load Renewable Energy FY 2012 Mix Predominantly fossil-fuel generation Generation follows load Note: Smart Grid: interoperability & integration Energy Exchange/ ASEAN Interconnection 2020 (Postulated Scenario) Proliferation of Renewable Energy EE & DSM/DR an alternative supply option Distributed Generation 4
TNB Roles as Distribution Licensee for RE implementation in Peninsular Malaysia Major roles includes: facilitate RE project applications in terms of connection availability, connectivity, contract binding, testing & commissioning payment to Feed-in Approval Holders (FiAH) and as a collection agent for RE Fund. Application for connection under FiT Scheme (mid 2013) Equivalent (MW) 1) Number of Application 1, ) Application in Progress ) REPPA signed 1, ) RE Project in progress ) RE project Commissioned to LV grid Source: Sustainable Energy Development Section (SEDS), Customer Service Department, Distribution Division, TNB 5
ASEAN Power Grid Inception under the ASEAN Minister of Energy (AMEM) and implemented under HAPUA 6 Existing Interconnection Peninsular Malaysia Singapore (1986, 2 x 200 MW) Peninsular Malaysia Thailand HVAC Bukit Ketri Sadao (1981, 85 MW) HVDC Gurun Khlong Ngae (2001, 300 MW) Potential Interconnection Peninsular Malaysia Sarawak (2022) Peninsular Malaysia Sumatera (2018) Peninsular Malaysia Thailand (2015, 2 nd 300MW HVDC) Rantau Panjang Sg. Kolok (under discussion) Sarawak and Sumatera interconnections are viable options to increase energy security The Singapore & Thailand Interconnections enhanced system security for all parties Note: HAPUA Head of ASEAN Power Utilities and Authorities 6
Smart Grid Promotes Energy Efficiency & Demand Side Management Changing customer energy consumption behaviors Energy Demand Enable peak load reduction Peak load reduction Consumption Behaviors Information on Energy Usage Customer awareness of their load (consumption) profile Incentivise Off Peak consumption Hours of the day 7
SG: A Journey & Enabler Towards A Greener Economy Smart Grid a crucial initiative to achieve sustainable growth: Fulfillment of nation CO 2 emission target Enhanced electricity supply reliability Enhanced efficiency of GTD & consumption Integrating Renewable (balancing generation & demand) DSM and Demand Response (peak avoidance) Auto Loss prevention TNB is implementing smart grid related pilot projects AAIBE-TNB SG Pilot (Smart Meter, AMI, ICT Integration, DR) Smart Grid Realisation Plan (SGMM) Specific site SG Feasibility Studies (JV), TNBR SG Testbed Smart Meter option Smart Grid Value Add Services DSM, DR, Automatic Load management & peak shaving Optimising demand & supply (generation) & new biz/process Enhanced efficiency in GTD & utlisation automated loss prevention and enhanced service at distribution /customer end Enhance Reliability via auto-matic outage prevention and restoration POWERING THE NATION 36
Closure Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry (MESI) is facing significant challenges due to the continuous changing landscape interspersed with numerous uncertainties and complexities periodically i.e. Increasing demand & national transformation plan, depleting domestic energy resources in particular gas, fluctuating & inherently escalating fuel prices, environmental concern and continuously higher expectations from the customers/stakeholders TNB is committed towards the national transformation programme (incl. IBR, RE, EE & DSM etc) to ensure a vibrant and sustainable ESI by implementing strategies to meet continuous demand growth through adequate generation capacity, diversified fuel mix & fuel supply, pricing mechanism and related reticulated infrastructures that are more efficient, economic and sustainable. This include deployment of Green & Sustainable related technologies such as RE, Smart Grid, DSM & DR etc. 9
